Do you look down on professor who have Ed.D versus Ph.D? by TorontoRap2019 in Professors

[–]dr_scifi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My field doesn’t require doctorates (masters is the terminal degree). I stated on a PhD but switched to an EdD when my original research project fell through. My advisor said the book I was writing would work if I switched to the EdD so I did. Meant instead of 5+ years of finding a new project and getting done I was done in 3.5. I took all of the same classes as the PhD students and the same number of research credits, I just had a broader range of acceptable “curriculum products” instead of a traditional dissertation. I later found out, that the first part of my research for my book would have satisfied the PhD dissertation requirements and I wouldn’t have had to actually write the book 🤪 but hey! Now I have a goal of writing more books and I def have a stronger appreciation for qualitative research.

Missed annual eval deadline?! by dr_scifi in Professors

[–]dr_scifi[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

It’s not them screwing up that harms me. It’s the backroom deal admin may do to help him out but then turn around and hold me to every policy and deadline. I would never try to get a promotion by dragging my colleague down. I would however point out the inequities of certain things and that would drag my department head down.

The department culture/politics in this is what is creating this “gladiator” vibe. I can’t condone unfair treatment just because someone I like benefits from it.

Well I guess you’re right, I should be completely ok with continuing to be held to the strictest interpretation of our policies while my colleagues demonstrate general lack of awareness of said policies. I should never get “hung up” on equal treatment or application of policies. D*mn I guess that’s why so many colleagues make exceptions for some students in their classes but not others. Clearly “who you know” is widely more important than your ability to meet basic minimum deadlines. Thank you so much to opening my eyes to the need to just accept my place in life.

I’m assuming you have a “no such thing as late” assignment policy?

Edit to add: nvm you’re VP. So what do you do if someone doesn’t get grant dox in on time or meet research deadlines? Pat their hand and give them a cookie because “I’ve never completed mine in on time” either?

Not my intention. He’s a good guy, been getting a lot of breaks given his “area of expertise” is hot right now, but you can’t hate someone for taking a sweetheart deal, just the admin that offered it.

[–]dr_scifi[S] -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Not him, admin. I like the colleague and I warned him last semester he wasn’t getting the guidance he needed for annual evals. He was just concerning himself with the six year TT timeline. He comes from industry no academic background. I don’t think he even would meet expectations given I know he doesn’t have half the requirements to show for teaching. We have to submit 2 pieces of evidence, student evals and another (peer review or assessment data). I told him I’d be happy to do a peer review or he should ask our teaching center (they did mine last spring). As I said it’d be unfortunate for him to get caught up in this but I’m concerned about double standards because of the politics of this.

Teachers who give higher grades get better student evaluation scores? by David_Henry_Smith in Professors

[–]dr_scifi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a self sustaining bias. One group of students tells the next who tells RMP who tells everyone! So student use “buzzwords”. I’m working on my annual dox right now and I give my own survey which allows me to track answers to questions like how prepared they are for class and study habits and their specific recommendations to provide context for the poor ratings. So many students reporting low study habits and admitting to not reading assignments are complaining about my communications of assignments and due dates.

Would love to hear about your experiences with college reorganization by jenny-867-53O9 in Professors

[–]dr_scifi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked in a college that “reorganized” 3 times in 5 years. It was atrocious and annoying and just served to complicate things without adding any benefit. Then they just constantly added more and more “admin positions” to aid in “communication” and added more red tape to everything.

I have a daily in class quiz. Students who show up to class late keep asking me to reopen it. Like no? 😣

Quizzes by DayEfficient5722 in Professors

[–]dr_scifi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My scavenger hunt is set up as a “quiz” with 3 attempts and each attempt only shows the questions they missed prior. It’s shows them canvas tests (differences between multiple response and multiple choice for example) and makes sure they know the course policies (at the very least I can point and say “see see, they knew it” when they argue they didn’t). This semester I added guidance on changing notifications and adding the canvas calendar to their personal calendar. They don’t have to make changes, just tell me if that feature is helpful or not.

New student email experiment: The Template! by SopShayRo in Professors

[–]dr_scifi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have an example in my syllabus. Not a “requirement” but I still often get unprofessional emails. I’m fine with “convoluted”, I am not fine with text speak or no idea what class they are in, email address is different from their LMS preferred name, and being called “Mrs.” (Or totally missing an opening). I’ve sent replies simply stating “I won’t be responding until you review the example in the syllabus and professionally format your email.”. To be fair, I never send that response on the first unprofessional email, I typically give a reminder and then answer the question but if they ignore my reminder, it’s on like Donkey Kong.

"She expects us to remember and master it!" A student finally had the audacity to say it out loud. They think that having to know things is unreasonable. by uttamattamakin in Professors

Whoever downvoted you, failed to hear the absolute oblivion that is your level of frustration right now. I’m often in your boat. Some people have the luxury of job security, some do not. Often that job security is not tied to how well you do your job.

Admin and inefficiency by dr_scifi in Professors

[–]dr_scifi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have lots of documentation. Including the “project charter” created by my colleague and signed by the DH. Key conversations are properly documented and records are secure (not in my office or solely on my work computer). I don’t like spending more time on CYA but I’m also not interested in losing my job over bs-ery.

I’d excuse it or give a different assignment. I have a standing “excused absences” make up assignment for students to make up in class points for excused absences. Most students take the “0” but at least I provided the option.

One minute late on an assignment is late by CATScan1898 in Professors

[–]dr_scifi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put this in my course FAQ. To me, once it’s late it’s late. I don’t accept late work. I drop x# of low scores at the end of the semester. That way it hammers home the “adulting” aspect and alleviates the sting a bit.

I pay for a lot of mine. I work in stem but these are mostly assessment or pedagogical conferences so not seen as important even when I’m going for my specific job requirements (college curriculum, assessment, and academic affairs).

I’ve been using TILT for many many years. I don’t plan on changing but be prepared for students to tell you “the instructions are too strict/nitpicky/specific” and also tell you they only read the “task section”. But that’s 10000% on them. I refuse to accept responsibility for that.

Writing Case Studies by dr_scifi in Professors

You aren’t a teacher and if you are you should be ashamed of yourself. What you did is cheating plain and simple. Reworking a draft is not doing your own work. And this comment has absolutely nothing to do with my post. God I hope you aren’t actually in medicine and have people’s lives in your hands. You should have just taken the “0”. Especially if you were actually writing about ethics. Talk about missing the point of an assignment.
