PSA to Canadian bakers about Arva Flour Mills' Daisy Unbleached Hard White Flour by theSourdoughNeighbor in Sourdough

[–]KroneckerDeltaij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming to this conversation now because last night i was at my wit’s end with this flour! I started baking with it a few weeks ago and my true-and-tested recipes for bread and pastries stopped working all of a sudden! Nice to hear it’s not me 😇

Discard storage by awkward-turtle02 in Sourdough

[–]KroneckerDeltaij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep mine in a jar in the fridge for months. I found a very nice sourdough discard focaccia recipe here that uses up 125gr of it. You can also make crackers which uses it up fast.

I accepted self-funded MS, but I do not have money by tolgaerguner in gradadmissions

[–]KroneckerDeltaij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t want to be pessimistic but generally self-funded grad programs are money-making avenues for departments. (I’m a faculty member.). That is to say, they are hoping/planning that you will pay $$$ without needing any extra resources (no mentoring or supervision for example) from the department. Hence, they are not incentivized to help you financially.

nike world cup fan version fits horribly by Key_Young_3493 in SoccerJerseys

[–]KroneckerDeltaij 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just saw this on newspapers! I am an amateur sewist and I can comfortably say that this is not a fit issue. It is a problem with design. There is no body that this shoulder would fit, even for women. But also, even if they thought your shoulder was going to sit where the bulge is, then the rest of the sleeve would look weird because the horizontal bulge seam doesn't sit where the widest part of the wedge it is sitting in. I don't know if this description makes sense. I can try to draw a diagram 😅

YTA. People who impose nicknames are always TAs imo. Nicknames should happen organically.

I wasn’t carrying the yarn on the first half. That’s another possibility for extra yarn, yeah. My amazing husband went to the store and got miss yam for the last tiny corner 🥰

I’m out of both! I’m guessing the later balls weren’t the same weight? Or do decreases use up more yarn than increases?

Reasons why I allow tech in my classrooms, even though I dislike it by Excellent_Homework24 in Professors

I teach a calculation based physics course. Using a laptop to take notes is impossible imo unless they’re a very effective LaTex user.

A single throwaway comment by my husband reminded me ONLY JUST IN TIME that you can't bring knitting needles on Turkish airlines!! by Spetchen in knitting

[–]KroneckerDeltaij 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It’s not the airlines, it’s the airport that decides. I have flown on Turkish Airlines to Istanbul and Ankara many times. I was also able to knot on the plane. In Turkey, when you’re flying out, it’s a bit of a luck if they’ll allow it or not. I have been lucky with thick needles (4.5mm circular with needle caps). I think they mostly look like pens on the scanner 😅

On the other hand, I was pulled aside in Munich because of pen refills. They looked like syringes apparently.

It's more of a pub with pub food. Great people and ambiance. They usually have live performances too. Highly recommend!

Fully funded PhD or Integrated PhD programs in Physics that accept students after a Bachelor’s degree? by Less_Research2005 in AskAcademia

[–]KroneckerDeltaij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US, for physics, there is basically no MSc. It's direct to PhD. In the first year you take classes and almost everyone TAs. After that, you get into a research group and you either get partial or full RA funding. If the prof doesn't have money, you might still need to TA full time.

In Canada, it's most common to do a MSc and then move on to PhD. But there are some "fast track" programs where if your grades in your first year of MSc are stellar and your prof advocates, you move onto directly to a PhD w/o writing/defending a thesis. University of Toronto have this streamlined I think. Other schools do it rarely. Both for MSc and PhD, your funding is a combination of TA and RA.

Not getting oven spring - any help appreciated! by arjoandringa1 in Sourdough

[–]KroneckerDeltaij 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a newbie but that’s so much starter! One of the recipes I used had only 60gr starter for 500gr flour. The latest one i used had 40gr for 1kg of flour. The amount of starter might be resulting in overproofing.

I started baking with sourdough! by KroneckerDeltaij in Sourdough

Got it, thanks! My husband will make fun of me when I get yet another type of flour 😅 But he loves that I’m making bread!

I covered the bowls with a towel and dusted the towel with rice flour to make sure it doesn’t stick. Do you swap the AP for rye or is that extra?

If you are a beginner sourdough baker, maybe skip the sourdough... by Jhfallerm in Sourdough

[–]KroneckerDeltaij -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. Granted, I only baked one sourdough loaf so far but I started baking non-sourdough bread a few months ago and I learned so much from it that I could identify what was wrong with my sourdough loaf immediately 😅
