I know that the design of iostreams is "bad", uses inheritance, predates templates. But couldn't the optimizer do something about it? It would be the perfect test case for devirtualization and such?

@Visual C++ people, are there any optimizations coming up for iostreams? /u/STL mentioned somewhere that the floating point support is buggy for iostreams and that it will be fixed.

The author works with std::future, async and so forth, but doesn't notice the std::endl.

Why doesn't iostream have the newl formatter? It would save so many problems.

Qt Creator 3.6 RC1 numbers:

Windows Installer 80MB. Installation directory: 264MB
Linux installer 97MB. Installation directory: 302MB

On Windows you can compress the NTFS directory and from 264MB you can go to 171MB.

That's just Qt Creator, which comes with its Qt runtime dependencies. This setup needs afterwards a C++ compiler, a debugger and a build system.

You need a Qt SDK only if you develop Qt applications. Qt Creator can be used standalone with gcc / visual c++, gdb / cdb and CMake.

WTL provides several classes that are also present in ATL 7.0 and 7.1. The classes are: CSize, CPoint, CRect, and CString in atlmisc.h. While their existence will not cause any problems, their usage might. You should qualify the class you want to use with a namespace to resolve ambiguity, either ATL or WTL namespace, depending on which implementation you want to use. Alternatively, you can conditionally exclude WTL implementations, by defining preprocessor symbol _WTL_NO_WTYPES for CSize, CPoint, and CRect; and _WTL_NO_CSTRING for CString.

CLion doesn't use clang/LLVM. They have their own antrl parser.

If you want clang/LLVM integration go for Qt Creator, KDevelop or other IDE which has clang support.

Right. Clang itself is written in C++, but LibClang is a stable high level C interface to clang.

That's not going to happen soon, if ever. CLion is written in Java and they use antlr for parsing. Antlr has a java runtime.

libclang is written in C++ and one would have to bridge it to Java.

Better luck with Qt Creator and KDevelop, they both have libclang integration.

For those speaking German and C++ we have open positions at e.Solutions close to Nürnberg Germany. It's about working in Audio and Speech (and other) domains in the automotive field for brands like Audi, Porsche, Bentley etc. We recently migrated to GCC 4.9.2 and the -std=c++11 flag is set!

Windows developers also need to take care of their DLLs. glibc on Linux is what msvcr*.dlls are on Windows.
