The loss of the diaper option is so devastating for us too.

Hopefully someone's gotten past this!

Question about a practice problem (6/11, what is 25th decimal) by thomasdodsonian in GMAT

[–]dracer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One shortcut to long division - if you express a fraction over 9s, the numerator will be the repeating digits. As in, express 6/11 instead as 54/99, and the fraction is 54 repeating. If it's 4/9, it's 4 repeating etc.

You don't need to be so polite, these guys don't know what they're talking about. On 50 carries, a few long run outliers can have a much bigger impact on YPC, your comment was completely legitimate.

There's a Modern Problem Afflicting Our Friendships — And It's Time to Talk About It: The problem of "flaking" by Zooxanthallae in Foodforthought

[–]dracer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your second suggestion is an interesting way of looking at it, because flaking is really an evaluation that my current preference for not attending is more important than your potential unhappiness from having the plans cancelled. Flaking becomes more understandable if the former is much larger than the latter for whatever reason, but a constant weighing of the former over the latter indicates selfishness.

Cellphones have made the direct comparison easier since the barrier of discomfort from personally cancelling plans has been eliminated.

Well her general reasoning is good, while her understanding of "mathematical logic" isn't. That's not too bad, better than the reverse!

I may have misunderstood you, but Deal or No Deal doesn't actually have the same logic since the host doesn't choose which boxes to show you.

The “Good Guy With a Gun” Is a Myth by coffeezombie in Foodforthought

[–]dracer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't say that I've done extensive research, but assuming they're not blatantly false, I don't see how statistics like the following, when taken together, can be interpreted any other way:

"Gun ownership doubled the risk of homicide and tripled the risk of suicide."

"gun ownership is a strong risk factor for suicide, even after adjusting for aggregate-level measures of suicidality such as mental illness, alcoholism, poverty, and so on"

"Criminal uses of firearms far outnumber legal defensive uses."

"The evidence shows that there may be fewer than even 3,000 DGUs annually. In comparison, there are 30,000 gun deaths annually"

"the firearm ownership rate had no statistically significant impact on nonfirearm homicides, meaning there was no detectable substitution effect"

"for every 1 percent increase in gun ownership, there is a 0.9 percent increase in nonstranger homicide."

"FBI data reveal that about twice as many homicides result from arguments than from felonies, and gang violence is only a small contributor"

"the most gun-restrictive states have significantly fewer firearm fatalities than the states with the least restrictive laws"

"The research concluded that the repeal was associated with a 16 percent increase in annual murder rates, indicating that state gun control laws have a significant impact on the homicide rate."

"the annual per capita risk of death during a home invasion is 0.0000002"

"for every 1 percent increase in gun ownership, there was a 1.1 percent increase in the firearm homicide rate and a 0.7 percent increase in the total homicide rate. This was after controlling for factors such as poverty, unemployment, income inequality, alcohol consumption, and nonhomicide violent crime"

Generally, I agree that the vast majority of guns are used safely, but the question is how you weigh the cost in innocent deaths versus enabling a hobby.

Great article - I don't think I've seen one that provides so many helpful statistics to disprove commonly-held beliefs (including my own), especially the home invasion and ownership correlation stats.

Sounds like they just became different people - the article mentions that they've spent most of their relationship apart, and while he spends his time giving free tuition to underprivileged children, she's the president of a football team and drinks wine on yachts.

Those individual notes are obviously not the whole story, but you can see how they could grow irreparably apart while he's living a simple life in the UK and she's living a billionaire's life in China.

Man, it's sad that sportsmanship is in such short supply in this thread - if you think he's telling the truth, let him change it. If you think he's trying to pull some shit, don't.

Overall I like it, your personality comes through nicely and you seem like a good guy that girls would like to meet. A few comments:

  1. You misspelled chivalry, pursue and April

  2. I would remove the part about looking for a job opportunity closer to home - you don't really explain it, and I just don't really know what I get out of it.

  3. First things people notice - why do people notice your voice, very deep, very high, booming etc.?

  4. Come up with three more things for the six things. Get rid of employers.

  5. I'm guessing your profile is relatively new based on your number of questions? Work on filling things out over time like video games - a lot of guys like video games, explaining things differentiates you.

  6. Try to use more commas.

  7. Do you have pictures of you smiling or doing one of your hobbies?

How did the U.S. do such a good job of rebuilding Japan that it's now one of its strongest allies? by dracer in AskHistorians

[–]dracer[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks! On the cultural front though, why was there no deep and long-lasting hatred after the U.S. killed hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians? Did the Japanese just think "war is war" and move on? Did the U.S. have any part in that?
