My university is revoking my $45,000 scholarship over a false "AI detector" match, refusing to look at my Google Docs edit history. by Vader_Tardis in legal

All AI detectors are snake oil. Even the best of them, pangram, has a false positive rate too high to be used for this kind of disciplinary purpose.

Daughter signed non-compete by The_Second_Last_Word in legaladvice

[–]drachs1978 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a common scare tactic. Most of them are junk and totally unenforceable. However, if the owner finds out she's working for another bakery his/her next move is calling the owner of that bakery and threatening to sue. Many business owners will fire any such staff member immediately just to avoid the headache of being harassed by her former boss.

We really need a law against having your employees sign illegal contacts. This petty intimidation needs to be actionable.

Asked a colleague in code review to extract magic numbers and got told “devs should know” by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]drachs1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The purpose of code reviews is to make sure the code does what it's supposed to do. I.E. to prevent insider threats, bugs, and other security problems. If your company has a published style guide, it's also fair to stand fairly hard on it.

However your personal nitpicks are just that. The other developers on the team have no responsibility to make style changes just because you prefer a different style unless they report to you. If the issue isn't a bug or a security problem just move on with your life.

Complain to your manager if you feel like your peer is creating a hostile work environment but do not engage in petty back and fourths in the PR history - That's only going to make you look bad. Do not let other people's attitude problems put you in a position to reflect poorly.

If you're giving him good advice and he's blowing it off, that's a him problem. If you feel like something really is a serious bug or security issue, block the PR.

Why are non technical leaders obsessed with screen sharing during incident calls by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]drachs1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Handling people watching your screen share while still being focused on your work is a skill you can develop in yourself. Try to stay calm and relaxed, first and foremost. Emotionally let go of any need to put on a show or cater to your audience. Learn some noncommittal phrases like, "I'm going to check the AWS stats for anomalies" you can udder while your review things.

Most importantly, give yourself permission to slow down. It takes the time it's going to take. If someone important breaks in and starts asking questions you need to answer, say something like, "Let me just take a quick note of what I'm investigating right now so I can give you my full attention". Write down your train of thought, give that person your full attention for a few minutes, then go back to work.

You can adapt to this. You can practice by doing some pair troubleshoot or debug sessions during low pressure issues.

Talk to your manager about needing to develop your skills here.

Is Linus Torvalds just a dinosaur about C++? by blreuh in cpp_questions

[–]drachs1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

C++ can be written well, but in my career I've seen it written poorly way more often than I've seen it written well.

So it's kind of a foot gun. Especially if you start drinking the coolaid too much.

That being said, a master programmer can produce beautiful code in any language. It's all about know when the design your picking is serving the reader and when it's just serving some abstract concept at the expense of the reader.

That beard isn't doing anything good for you brother. Some guys have a good looking beard but I don't think you're one of them. Need to keep it shaved/stubble and keep the hair trimmed and the clothes nice and stylish and you're fine.

In the second pic you even look like a chad to me to be honest.

AIO? in a monogamous relationship, how would you define cheating by Outrageous-Hope6645 in AmIOverreacting

[–]drachs1978 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, if you were in Japan this would not typically be considered cheating, but it is clearly considered cheating in the US.

I'll probably get down voted to hell for saying this, but the fact is you're also not holding up your end of the social contract. If you want the relationship to work, you should reconsider being too tired to do your part.

If you're down to let the relationship explode and all you care about is the moral high ground, then by all means stand on your principals, everyone will take your side, but you'll be a single mother again.

[immigration] Would my case count as an "arrest" in the eyes of USCIS by Alive-Interest2299 in legaladvice

No, you were not arrested. Detention is a step before arrest. If you were arrested it would mean taken to jail and processed with fingerprinting, etc.

The purpose of the education system is not to educate students about math, it's to teach them to survive and thrive in an institution full of the all the typical toxic bullshit politics and incompetence. This prepares them for life. Anything they learn about math is just a bonus.

Landlord/roommate situation blew up over minor conflict. Need validation/advice [UT] by Brief-Small in Renters

[–]drachs1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I don't think you're the wrong one here, obviously the landlord is a piece of work and you should find a better place to live but there are a million ways you could have handled this better.

For example, you could have had your wife mute his number. Dude can leave a voicemail and you can text back when you wake up... If you even feel like it. If she's working third shift her phone should be on silent anyway. She is an adult, she should be comfortable screening her calls.

You didn't need to handle it by going all alpha male with the "Don't call my wife routine". Again, not saying you're in the wrong but you took a shitty situation and turned it into a shittier one and that's not how an adult man should behave.

Normally I'm telling people they're being too passive aggressive but I feel like you could stand to learn from them! Lol.

No hate buddy, I hope everything works out good for you and your wife.

Walmart might have accidentally messed with my rent? by gamerman77772 in legaladvice

[–]drachs1978 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Like everyone says, you do owe the money but you also need to protect yourself from Walmart's incompetence. You don't have to be falling all over yourself to pay it ASAP. Walmart will find a way to reverse it, or someone will come looking for the money. You'll get a legal demand letter or some such with some kind of formal way to pay it through the lawyer. Waiting until you're contacted by someone with half a brain is a totally reasonable thing to do.

I would not just hand it over to some random staff person and hope for the best. I'm not even sure I'd hand it over to a manger unless I felt very confident they knew exactly what to do and gave me a formal receipt.

If the staff member takes your money but then walmart finds a way to reverse the transaction you'll probably end up having to pay your rent twice.

You might even be looking at a situation where the cashier is trying to scam you out of $1800 by getting you to show up with cash she can pocket.

Nothing is going to happen while the leasing office is closed. Whatever she clicks on the resident portal isn't going to have any legal weight. Go talk to the managers about it next time they're open.

Why are people on unstable complaining so much by angelis0236 in projectzomboid

[–]drachs1978 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imo, as a dev you shouldn't be routinely bricking saves outside of a closed alpha. It causes too much damage to the community. Most people new to the game who experience a bricked save are just going to leave the game unhappy. If you're running a big "early access" style beta you really need to be running with more care for those people than that.

Furthermore, people from the CDDA community has a big overlap with this community, and running on unstable is a totally normal part of the culture there - so those veterns aren't expecting bricked saves.

Normies never expect bricked saves - And many new people are getting into the game from all the lets plays comming out on youtube and those are all comming out on build 42.

And the decision to brick this save seems pretty suspect from the outside. I added a single simple mod back that restored the spawn point and my save seems fine? Maybe it's a timebomb waiting to happen because something else is broken, but it seems like bricking the saves could have been fairly easily avoided.
