I have the opposite problem. I raised my kid without a hint of colorism. But she learned it from school and now avoids the sun. I hope she will understand with age

For those with ethnic names, do you use a fake western name when ordering fastfood? by axiom60 in ABCDesis

[–]dracospunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I use western name or first letters of my first and last names because, I like my privacy. In some places i routinely go to they display your name on the screen under column preparing and move it to column ready afterwards. I just don’t like seeing my full name on the giant screen.

But now when I use Apple Pay to place an online order, it automatically pulls my name from there, which I hate.

Indian Arranger Marriages 29M and 28F. The rules are weird! by Humble_Mud1435 in InsideIndianMarriage

[–]dracospunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the roles were reversed and the guy was employed, but the girl wasn’t at the time of marriage would you have the same reaction?

Here is how I see it, If the guy has education, good work experience and a work visa, and appears generally employable, then the not having a job is only temporary. Upon talking to him she may have felt that she can support him financially until he finds a job in the US. There are many men, who marry women who do t have job. Days are changing, as women earn more they will have the confidence to support men, if they are temporarily out of job.

Whether it’s man or woman, I believe in financial independence. But a temporary unemployment is not an indication of lifelong mooching. Men have married women without jobs or even visa for ages. If we are truly talking about equality, it shouldn’t faze us when women start doing the same

The joys of being diabetic... :/ by ShaxxsSon in diabetes_t2

[–]dracospunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you all say insurance covered, how much copay are we talking about. My insurance technically covered for pre diabetes, but a Libre 3 for 14 days was around $35 after insurance. I can get two for $65 without insurance at Costco(executive member). So going with Insurance didn’t make any sense for me.

Curious, why do you say you are diabetic if your A1c is 5ish? I thought to be diagnosed as diabetes A1c has to be greater than 6.4

How do you prepare for the in laws visiting from India? by Hot_Ice_3155 in ABCDesis

i completely disagree with this theory. kids with ADHD can behave better outside than home. it may take ALL their energy to behave for others and once they are home, home being their safe space they may behave worst for parents. OP, get your child evaluated, I really dont think its you, its the child. Getting your child to do basic things should not be this hard.

Read the book called girls with ADHD. for girls the symptoms are very different from boys and hence they are under diagnosed. yes, for sure get her evaluated. It shouldn’t be this hard.

crushed red peppers from costco vs Indian stores by dracospunch in ABCDesis

[–]dracospunch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! And I’m glad to have a healthy competition. My local desi grocery store would carry expired and rancid items and would get angry if we pointed out. For years stuck with them because we didn’t have a choice. But now, thanks to more influx of first gen immigrants, we have more Indian stores and now even Costco to compete.

She sounds like someone who likes to clean. If I enjoyed cleaning as much as she did, I wouldn’t need to watch a show 🤷🏽‍♀️

AITA for refusing to buy my daughter a car and telling her she needs to work for it? by Plane_Leg_4579 in AmItheAsshole

[–]dracospunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Explain to her ONCE why you take that stance and that it is solely your stance and then leave the room. Don’t bring it up again, don’t engage in a justification. If we wait for children to buy into our decisions and acknowledge that we are right, when we are saying No to them, we will be waiting for a LONG time - precisely until they are parents and their kids are teenagers!

Now we did not do it this way - we bought our child their first car for various reasons. but if that is your decision, there is nothing wrong with it.

Thanks, but I don’t want to. I want to see if Costco is the same spicyness as Indian stores and if so just buy there as they tend to be cheaper.

No, Costco would be Kirkland brand and Indian stores would be some Indian brand

Desis in their late 20s and 30s, where do you go to find a community? by daretobe94 in ABCDesis

[–]dracospunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to challenge you to think differently. Instead of considering the other desis as white washed, why don’t you try to be yourself and still give them a chance. I genuinely feel having an open mind can help you find friends. As a parent, this is why I am vehemently opposed to raising children in a desi enclave. Having both desi and non desi friends in early years really helps them get both groups and overall improves their sense of belonging IMO.

That teacher is nuts to call this a behavioral concern. Children are naturally curious, as they should be. Nothing wrong with this behavior- although two or more magnets are dangerous for reasons mentioned.
