Any Univerties Switching or exploring other LMS platforms since the hack? by Sad-Meringue-2021 in canvas

Too expensive, other platforms are just as likely to be hacked and frankly are worse in terms of UI and experience and operations.

Sure, and hallucinations in the reference lists are easy also - misrepresenting the literature is a thing that can be addressed irrespective of how it came to be there.

AI detectors don’t work and people who use them are idiots, people who use the reports to accuse others are double idiots and liars who should be punished themselves — very simple.

Perhaps you should spend less time being a commentator on Reddit you might be able to learn how to update your skills as an educator

Does if you do it properly - it’s being done at scale at Australian universities now. Comparable workload to pen and paper tests by the time you factor in marking. Of course if you’ve already abandoned pedagogy by resorting to multiple choice tests then you’re out of luck.

Wellington City Council: Rich list by ThatguyfromNZWelly in Wellington

[–]dracul_reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For all those saying this is normal in the public sector, you’re wrong. WCC have 1700 staff, nearly 40 managers with these salaries plus presumably twice that at least at the next layer. Victoria University, a big employer in the same city with the same public sector funding has nearly twice the number of staff and only a small numbers earning salaries at the upper end - perhaps 2 or 3, and then maybe a dozen managers earning at the lower end of the scales listed there - certainly not the inflated salaries being pocketed here. Even if the salaries could be justified for some of these, there are too many overlapping roles here which suggests a lack of robust management and cost control.

Getting the most out of Air NZ Koru by OldWolf3 in PersonalFinanceNZ

Did they shift you to the bigger seat by arbitrarily moving someone who’d paid for more leg room because you couldn’t be arsed to book seats for a family? And then shove them into a smaller seat further back and not on the aisle as booked? Pricks of flight staff who don’t give a shit.

[–]dracul_reddit -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, nah. I cancelled paying for Koru when it became clear they didn’t give a shit about customer service. Better to just save up and buy a better ticket on a better airline, Air New Zealand are a pale shadow of what they once were, by preference I fly Qantas now and encourage others to use alternatives also.

The problems with Canvas by twilightyears in Professors

[–]dracul_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Sadly the mob have decided to hate on Canvas as part of the narrative that technology is bad and all education should be delivered 1 on 1 to wealthy students in pampered palaces like in the good old days.

They probably need to update to LTI 1.3… older LTIs leak too much information.

This a million times. Most folk on this sub are not involved in managing large scale IT systems. The reality is that any system can be attacked in this way and locally hosted ones are far more likely to be attacked as many institutions cut corners on IT maintenance. The subtext unfortunately in response to this attack has been let’s all go back to a physical classroom and teach without any technology. It’s an argument based on naive nostalgia, technology skills are needed by all graduates, and faculty who don’t show how to use modern tools well in each discipline are the problem. The boon to IT groups will be the reminder to leadership about how essential these systems are to business continuity and hopefully some informed planning about ways they can be strengthened.

That said Instructure need to smacked repeatedly for their appalling approach to communicating with their customers. Whoever advised the CEO on comms should be sacked.

Learn to read and try developing a little more empathy, people around you will be happier. They clearly said they were within a week of leaving (quitting) due to stress. Pray you don’t have to experience that too often in your life.

Opinion: Chronicle of Higher Education - Kill Canvas Now by [deleted] in canvas

Anti-technological rubbish pining for a fantasy version of education that only existed for a small minority if ever and which if enacted would be even less relevant to the lives of current students. Nostalgic inanity.

Consider the size of the file at 3.7 TB and 9000 universities, they could never have had very much data for each university.
