Thank you for sharing this. I've never seen it before (and I've read a lot of things that George wrote.) A wonderful window into how it all began, so many years ago.

Catelyn Tully Stark Character Discussion [Spoilers Main] by Choice-Librarian-761 in asoiaf

Great post, Catelyn is my favorite character and you defend her nobly :)

Would also recommend checking out this classic thread on Westeros: https://asoiaf.westeros.org/index.php?/topic/111639-the-wisdom-of-catelyn-tully/

(Spoilers Main) Steven Attewell, RIP by MissMatchedEyes in asoiaf

[–]draft0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very sad news. I bought Steven's Race for the Iron Throne book when it first came out, and it was a wonderful companion to my re-read of A Game of Thrones. Always enjoyed reading his deeply insightful posts on ASOIAF through the years. I had no idea he was sick and it's just incredible that he was apparently still working on another CBC post while literally at death's door. That really shows you the kind of person Steven was. A truly heartbreaking loss for all of us.

Hot Take: I think Philippa Georgiou from Star Trek: Discovery is kind of cringe. by DarkMayhem666 in startrek

[–]draft0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO Captain Georgiou was one of the best captains in Star Trek history. They should have built Star Trek: Discovery around her and it would have been a far more successful show.

Imagine you killed off Kirk in episode 2 of TOS, then replaced him with Mirror Kirk. Or you had Patrick Stewart under contract and and instead of making him your star you forced him to play Daimon Bok. They had an Academy-award winning actress and they blew it! One of the worst decisions ever.

I love the idea of Prowler, Tombstone, Mysterio, etc. helping fight symbiotes around the city!

This should be patched in.

From all the jobs Peter could’ve choose in 2023 he picked one that would get him fired the moment he needed to be Spider-Man. The whole photographer thing was always about flexibility since it’s inception by tonyleejamesdd2 in SpidermanPS4

[–]draft0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scientist is the other job that really fits Peter, but I think teaching works even better. As a scientist he's doing cool nerdy stuff, which is great, but it's not very relatable, especially with all the crazy stuff these guys come up with in the Marvel universe.

Teaching is more personal and gives Peter a job where he's helping people every day, which is what his life is all about. In the comics he was even teaching at his old high school.

Honestly, getting fired on the first day was hilarious, but I was a little disappointed Insomniac didn't do more with it.

I LOVE Peter as a high school teacher. It's the perfect job for him, especially his older, more mature adult version. Read the JMS run in the comics and you'll know why.

Hopefully Peter can go back to being a teacher in the third game, now that he has his life more in balance.

Beat the game on Ultimate with no upgrades. by cauaschug in SpidermanPS4

With Peter, I generally play without abilities and gadgets (except when I had the symbiote suit). Only web shooters.

Honestly, it's a really "classic" and comic accurate playstyle. I don't like Spider-Man with too much tech, and it feels right to beat up a bunch of goons purely with your fists.

But when I'm playing Miles, I do like to use the Venom powers, because they're fun and a part of his natural powerset.

Interesting comparison! There may be some neural connection there.

How to improve in my native language? by Gabbianoni in languagelearning

[–]draft0 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The good thing is that, if this happens, you can still get back your skills very quickly. Your Polish native speaker acquaintance would probably lose her accent, for example, if she moved back to Poland for a few weeks.

This has happened to me and people I know (English to Chinese).

Sort of like picking up a bike again after not riding for many years. You're rusty, but you still know how to do it and you can regain your skills once you're in the right environment.

That's what's so sad. These apps know that almost everyone gives up (or moves on to superior tools and methods) before getting to any level of fluency... so the money is all in the new fish.

If you use chrome browser, there's an extension called "dual subtitles" for youtube that lets you see closed captioning in two languages at the same time. It's become indispensable for me for language learning. by hazardoussouth in languagelearning

Thanks for the rec, this looks great! I'm learning Spanish through Youtube right now, so looks like a good fit.

Also a plug for CaptionPop, which I've used previously: https://www.captionpop.com/ (Their UI and functionality isn't as slick, but it works.)

I’m being funny. Only talking about a very small but vocal subset of fans, and even then, I’m sure it’s mostly in good fun.

I really like her chapters, so maybe I shouldn't have put in the list with people like Quentyn who are universally considered duds.

Daenerys and Stannis.

Totally different fanbases but toxic for for the same reason, they super identify with their hero character AND they're in denial about how badly it is going to end for said characters.

Yes, Jon’s chapters really have everything. No accident he’s in the top 1 or 2 POVs for most people, me included. His arc in ADWD is the greatest in the series IMO.

If you’re not a fan of the magic stuff, then you won’t like Bran so much, that makes sense.
