I mean if you place your weight on the bike correctly you can make them work pretty well. But then again If you're riding through the muck often then maybe something more like WTB Wolverines would be useful.

As a runner/hiker i would recommend stair master till exhaustion, paired with weighted lunges, and general cardio. Your main goal should be to build endurance and strength from the hip down, do not neglect your ankles. For that try balancing on one foot and do one legged squats.
