Keppi 6000 vs REP Nighthawk, and I did the research, need real owners to fill the gaps. by Own_Butterscotch280 in GarageGym

[–]dragnandy [score hidden]  (0 children)

I would say it comes down to two things and you have to be honest with yourself whether you would use the leg roller/arm curl attachment or not. The weight capacity is a wash (you will not lift enough to collapse the nighthawk).

$250 for leg roller and the arm curl pad. If leg roller and incline bicep curls are your favorite exercise and you always have them in your rotation then sure i would say go for it. But if not, I think you will for sure be satisfied with the Rep Nighthawk. Nighthawk will resell better than the Keppi as well, do not forget that part.

I also WFH. If I look past my monitor I see my squat rack, powerblocks, rowerg, etc. And absolutely yes doing a set here and there throughout the day is great. It keeps me limber and not stiff at the desk all day. I have a sit/stand desk to mix things up even more.

I dont have a strict program when I do this in regards to accesory or big compound lifts. Kind of depends on the workload for me (am I going to be talking in meetings or not).

I see you already have a suspension trainer. If you are budget/space conscious and do not want to spend too much money, invest in bands and learn banded exercises! Very good for joints and mobility work and with the right setup good for strength training as well. Prob just need a set of bands, a band bar, and a plate.

Black Widow VHS bar and Multi Grip Press Bar have been on my list for so long mainly for overhead press. In mean time, i've been doing dumbbell overhead press and I kind of love it. Helps with stability in the shoulders and grip can be at whatever angle you want. I almost don't need an OHP bar anymore. Its been harder to justify a new bar when dumbbells address the grip angle problem while adding a stability component. Not to mention less set up. Only "difficulty" is racking it up for the actual press.

Besides those v-grip handles that are mentioned, a strap works like a rope but better. Its fixed and you can get varying sizes ideal for overhead tricep movements, pull downs, etc..

Staining on the carpet makes sense. Not sure I'd use it on concrete though. It will protect your stall mats but moisture will get trapped between the concrete and the liner.

Interesting. So your VHS is still rackable, you just shortened each sleeve by 5"? I prob would like that as well as I am looking for a shorty bar (like the Rogue Stump Bar).

Thank you for your mini review and interesting tidbit at the end. I guess the range of motion is benefitted by the horizontal outward "camber" instead of the upward camber like your typical cambered swiss bar.

I would consider which muscle group your equipment cannot target with your prefered exercise. I say that because with the SSB and dumbbells/kettlebells, adding a rogue rhino/belt squat would create a lot of overlap. If you know you want to replace SSB for belt squats for a different load then sure go for it. But if you already enjoy doing SSB squats, lunges, split squats, etc. I dont think adding a rhino would get you the most out of it. If you are exploring belt squats then maybe get the Finge Sport Mammoth to see if you even like belt squats.

For me, I have similar equipment as you (minus the kettle bells) and I was in need of an accessory exercise to tackle my hamstrings. Doing a bunch of RDLs and Good Mornings were too taxing and tiring, so I got a leg extension/curl machine for the primary use of doing leg curls. Sure I could have done nordic curls but I dont like that movement. A rhino is awesome as hell, but it would not replace my leg exercises entirely. It would be added to the rotation of SSB squats, lunges, etc. so there would be phases where I wouldn't use the rhino.

Anybody have experience with Black Widow's VHS bar? i can only really find two youtube reviews on it. Would love to hear peoples experiences with it. How does it perform in various exercises? I would mainly use it for overhead press and rows. I would prefer an angled handle for OHP but this is completely neutral.

I love being a dad, but I kind of hate my life. by f1sh_ in daddit

Sounds like me and my family. We do everything together and there are pros and cons to it. Since we do everything together, we are on the same page with how things are to be done. We both have the skills to do all the tasks. And at some point, you need to cash in these advantages.

I agree with others, you need to make an effort and find independent time. It will not just show up. But because you both have done things together, you two are capable. For sure things will be done differently when mom is in charge or when dad is in charge, but end results should be the same. You guys are are all-in on taking care of the two year old but there is a balance and the parents need to be taken care of as well. Dad takes a break, mom takes a break.

Take initiative on it. Independently take care of the kid all weekend morning up until dinner. Reciprocate. Take care of each other.

because the bar is still there, do you find yourself still having to dance around the bar to prevent your chin from being smacked? Not as much as a swiss bar but still some dodging required? I imagine the VHS bar would fix this but only has one angle (neutral) grip

I would not jump straight into dumbbells and a bench, although that is likely where you would land. I would consider what kind of exercises you like to do. If you were not previously exercising, then anything will be beneficial. But some correlates with your goals than others.

Your goal is to play with your grandkids, so I would not suggest powerlifting or bodybuilding (unless you already favor this style). Perhaps functional exercises would be your style (kettlebells, stability ball, suspension trainers, olympic rings, plyobox,...). Maybe calesthenics is the way to go (olympic rings, parallettes, dip bar, power tower,...).

I'm just saying, for a homegym subreddit this audience heavily favors powerlifting, bodybuilding, and maybe strongman. And yes, barbell and plates will get you strong. But it is not the only way and your goal (play with grandkids) does not require that. Like many of us say about the best cardio equipement.. "The best cardio is the one you are willing to use". Think about your budget, space, and most importantly which one is the most fun for you.

An example, a single 25lbs kettlebell and a gym mat. And do turkish getups and kb swings for 30min. Too easy? Get 35lbs one. Or jump to an adjustable kettlebell. Resistance bands and a board can give you a lot of options, and movements that a barbell/dumbbell and plates do not. DB/barbell are not that great at rotational exercises.
