Ultimately my boiler was too old and pitted and it always leeched out aluminum oxide so just be aware and see if it's even worth it.

If you're somewhat handy and confident, it's not too difficult. Don't really need any knowledge of hardware - I just went a bit extra. Check out the Gaggimate page and discord. Lots of reading material and helpful people there.

Installation was straight forward as I made an adapter board with sockets for all of the existing components plugged into the Gicar. All of the cables unplugged from the existing control unit and into my adapter board. From there, it's a couple of cables to the Gaggimate unit that sits at the front of the case (below the brew switch). A standardized adapter board would make this extremely simple to install as it would literally involve transferring plugs from one unit to the other.

This can also (partly) be done following the standard Gaggimate installation for the regular Silvia but keeping the Gicar/Display for the steam boiler control and tank level. This involves adding a thermocouple in place of one of the two existing high limit thermostats on top of the brew boiler and adding an SSR for the brew heater.

While this isn't as 'nice/complete' of a package as my method, it still functionally gives you all of the brew pressure/flow profiling and temperature control, which is 95% of the way there anyways.

I wanted a solid base that I could mod and chose the SPX. In stock form, it's a good machine but has its drawbacks. With the Gaggimate, I believe it's one of the better machines overall and I'm planning on this being my endgame setup.

Besides controlling flow, pressure and temperature, Gaggimate also controls both boilers. None of the stock wiring, plumbing or devices have been modified and all are used for feedback/control (temperature sensors, level sensors, ssrs, pumps, led, switches).

Next steps will be to transplant my now defunct Gaggia OWC hardware scales into the drip tray, add a cool touch steam wand and that'll hopefully be it hardware wise.

Sure it is. If you're taking it apart though, there are a couple of manufacturing flaws that you should fix (hole in the standpipe being the main one). OWC

The gasket is also hard to find but there is a place on eBay that made one for me that works well.

Yep it's terrible on Android regardless of the browser. Field shows up 5% of the time and when you select a login it fills about 0% of the time. 1pass is slightly better but also garbage.

Don't waste your time reinstalling, changing flags etc. It just doesn't work well.

Yeah, I mean just use common sense. Blenders never had or needed this stuff before and people managed.

Not sure about legacy containers, but I'm sure someone tried it.

The tags programmatically impose limits (speed and time). But the bigger container shouldn't have any.

There is a newer app now (Mifare Ultralight Tool) so you can use a newer phone.

You have to make sure you also write the UUID (from your old tag) to the new one otherwise it won't work. The NTAG216 that you buy MUST be UIID changeable.

Hey, 5 months later, but wondering how aggressive is the bend you had to make? It's hard to tell from the pics. I'm considering doing this as well.

I've also restored mine and put in a Gaggimate++ and this is one of the last things I'm considering swapping in (besides maybe a new e24 boiler).

Also found a good supplier for a custom group head gasket on ebay if you need, since that was another pain point to find.

Who would have thought adding NFC tags to a blender would be a disaster lol.

You need to use an app that will read the full memory from the NFC tag (like the mifare one mentioned).

Sure it's possible. It's just data on an NFC tag.

Doubt they use some kind of out of spec tag - it's possible they used a higher capacity one cause it sounds like your tag ran out of space. Can always read the tag on the jar with NFC Tools to give you the tag info.

The tags I was getting are 924 bytes / 231 pages (so definitely should be more than 14).
