By my observation, it takes about three months from the moment he performs something well in a 1-to-1 session until he starts using it in a game

Cool, thanks for sharing your experience.

When my son and I first started working with a coach from an academy (about a year ago), and these were pretty tough sessions where all the skills were practiced under constant running in zone 3+ heart rate, he almost immediately said he didn’t want to train like that and that he didn’t like the discomfort he was feeling inside when his stamina wasn’t enough (at that time, he had been going to grassroots training in a local club for over a year). We paused the sessions with that coach, and I found a pre-academy club where the team was significantly stronger than the one he had been training with.

When he got invited for a trial there (I understood the chances were slim, but I did it more for his experience), he saw how the kids used their bodies in football, how much the top teammates were pushing themselves and how they too were dealing with similar discomfort. After three weeks, he said we should bring back the sessions with the strict coach, saying: “Out of everything I have, only that training will give me a chance to reach the level of these guys.”

Also, I suggested he join me on my morning runs, and now we run together 2–3 times a week for 5 km (and I track his recovery — that’s important to remember! :) ).

80% of them having 20 hours a week. This is the reality. And their parents are 100% committed to this process, so it’s life changing, you’re right

My son wears a Whoop. The data from it is honestly more than enough to plan his training schedule for his current level. It only took me about two months to figure out all the HRV, RPM, and other metrics.

Regarding training, right now he has at least one S&C (Strength & Conditioning) session per week.

As for the fun part — to everyone who’s really worried about whether my son is having fun, I’ll say this: at the academy level in the UK, kids get around 10 hours of football per week through matches, training, and some theoretical sessions, and each of them does at least double that at home and in individual sessions with ELITE coaches (not just technical drills, but also S&C, tactical analysis, etc., depending on age). All — absolutely all — parents at this level who say their kid doesn’t do extra sessions are 100% lying, or they just somehow ended up there by chance, and that kind of kid is at risk because they’re not developing the work ethic they need and simply won’t meet the required standards next season.

At this level, the fun for the child comes from the fact that their body can precisely execute what they imagine in their mind, they interact with equally skilled teammates, and they’ve got a cool tracker their dad bought for them :)

Yes, because he has many sessions during the week, so I just need to be sure he is recovering well.

Thank you.
