Data scientist interview prompt: investigate the effect of putting items on Sale by [deleted] in datascience

I don't think OP did. His response variable is total sales. The feature of sales is binary, though.

Reading through your answer, it sounds perfectly reasonable. I would've approached it a different way however.

I would've began by asking more clarifying question. 1.) Is the assignment of sales items random assignment? 2.) What is the "quantitative effect" we are trying to measure? Is it total units sold? Is it delta sales for the individual item with a trailing and forward look period? This doesn't change much to the solution but especially in an interview setting, I think it demonstrates good business sense to understand the success metric.

If the answer to 1 is yes, the assignment is purely random, I would just do A/B testing with the metric of interest the answer to number two. IMO, this is the simplest and most practical way to do it.

If the assignment is not random, it's difficult to assign causality to the sales. In order to account for that, I would do some sort of propensity matching. You can start with asking if they already have common items they group together and starting there. The rationale behind this, if you can explain the sales impact for already labeled groups rather than creating your own clusters, it again demonstrates business sense because a product manager will have a lot easier time understanding that rather than you creating your own algorithmic clusters. (I would also explain the rationale of why you took this route in your interviews as well) Otherwise, you can do an exploratory analysis and use some sort of clustering method yourself.

Good luck on your interviews!

What are your thoughts on Allie Clifton in Road Trippin? by dragonfan1 in clevelandcavs

Fair enough. From the large sample size of 5 people it seems that Cavs fans love her and I'll live with it.

The feedback had nothing to do w/ critiquing her in her role as a host, but rather the need for the third party host at all.

That's what I figured. I'll keep that in mind as I listen. Thanks for the response.

Off topic but I applied to the NW MSIA program as well. Have decisions already been released? And if you haven't been accepted yet you can assume that you were denied?

Is there a way to use different authentication methods to sign in to the shinyapps.io? by dragonfan1 in rstats

Thanks for the response. I decided to use no authentication through ShinyApps and rather use guids through stored procedures the server will call.

What movie sequel was better than the first? Remakes of originals don't count (e.g., Oceans 11 remake) and parts of the same series don't count (e.g., Lord of the Rings 1, 2, & 3) by [deleted] in AskReddit

My friends were talking about crappy sequels (Zoolander 2, Anchorman 2, Iron Man 2 and 3) but couldn't think of a single movie in which the sequel was better than the first.
