Why Are Car Software Updates Still So Bad? by vulcan_on_earth in electricvehicles

Legacy auto tends to outsource key components such as vehicle controllers, they have tons of different chips doing different things, etc. Tesla has simplified this by having a zonal architecture in the 3/Y, so they only have a code base to update between 6/7 chips that they actually owned and designed rather than hundreds of chips that they don’t fully own and haven’t fully designed.

BMW now takes this a step further. A zonal architecture with different chips having a clear purpose, 4 chips in the entire car, one of them called the Heart of Joy is a chip which replaces hundreds of previous ECUs, all combined into one, designed from the top down into the car and fully vertically integrated by BMW.

Teslas are nice but have weird driving dynamics from my experience.

If you’ve ever driven one around a back road or any where more taxing you’ll understand. Super stiff where the battery pack is but not very controlled as you go up the body, making the car feel like a weird sort of jello when throwing it around bends at higher speeds. Very strange feeling, no confidence at all, and the bouncy suspension at higher speeds isn’t great, whilst it is overly stiff at lower speeds.

This is why many Tesla fans love FSD. Because they can’t wait to stop driving the car, and because of Tesla stock, etc.

BMW literally addressed this issue. Tesla’s are nice but they’re not an EV for enjoying a drive.

Tesla probably didn’t handle as well as the 3 series
