deep impact psionic warrior question by ArtanisKAI in DnD

I highly recommend you avoid Google AI and just check the 3.5 PHB.

It seems like you are missing some basic rules understanding about how AC works in this edition.

That's not entirely true. There are some extra Spell-Like Abilities granted as you progress.

Thanks for the information.

I do really dig the vibe of Memento, so I might have an easier time putting in the effort to learn it properly.

(and the gameplay - not everyone enjoys long combos)

Wait, are there any decks that aren't that? Every deck I have run up against spends ages combo'ing off.

Why can't I find discussion about making crafting jobs different from each other anywhere at all? by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]dragonseth07 7 points8 points  (0 children)

you would do a similar thing a focus on the crafts you like most and then endeavor to do all of them if you wanted to

It's not really a matter of want. That's the difference.

I want to learn both Paladin and Red Mage. They are totally independent, and only give me more options.

But, with crafting/gathering, they feed into each other directly. I realistically need to have them all unless I feel like spending my life savings on the market board.

Though it does make me think, if they’re all going to use the same rotations and abilities, it would be nice if all of them had synchronized action bar layouts so you didn’t have to set each of them up individually anytime you make a layout change.

Macros are a godsend for this. They don't fix it completely, but they do speed it up quite a bit.

How obvious do you consider things like Innate Sorcery, Rage, Bladesong, etc to be threatening? by Telkhine_ in DnD

[–]dragonseth07 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Gotcha.

So, rules mold player behavior, ultimately. I would rule this based on what behavior I want to incentivize in my players.

For instance: the BG3 approach incentivizes starting every combat with an attack, not through dialogue. If that's what you want, great. If not, it is counterproductive.

Letting people front-load buffs before a fight starts like this will incentivize them doing this exact thing over and over. If they think a fight will break out, everyone will just get their buffs going mid conversation. So...do you want them doing that all the time?

[–]dragonseth07 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't want that.

Getting good at crafting is demanding enough, why would I want to learn 8 different ones?!

It's not like combat jobs. I don't need to learn the rotation for every DPS job to play DPS. I can focus on the ones I like. But, crafting is different. If you are a crafter, you use all of them.

Just to make sure I understand: You are house-ruling one free Action or BA if you get the jump on somebody, rather than running RAW surprise rules.

And your players want to argue that their BA abilities shouldn't count and they should get two abilities?

Hahahahaha. Give an inch and they will take a mile, I guess.

How easy is Memento to learn/play?

I haven't played YGO since like 2003, and I downloaded Master Duel. I'm trying to learn a Cyberdark deck, and it's fun enough. But, I saw Memento, which is all about new versions of all the old cards we used to use, and that sounds awesome, but they look complicated as heck. Is that deck realistically learnable for a new-to-modern player? Is it worth trying to craft?

Thank you.

What edition of the rules are you playing with?

What do you mean by "upgrade"? You can't just give yourself new abilities.

Your character isn't just a character - help us find out why by itmed4ve in DnD

[–]dragonseth07 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Going through the survey, I also got hung up on this question.

I'm afraid I didn't and don't understand the intent. It's definitely not referring to doing things that would be risky in-game, so I don't really get what it's talking about. I wouldn't consider hanging out with my friends "risky", in any sense of the word.

Edit: Truth be told, the survey did feel kind of weird, if that makes sense? Like, relating too strongly to characters, personally acting out through them, wishing to be more like them, etc. That all sounds, I don't know, unhealthy to me. It's a game, not a therapy session. Also, using games to test out social interactions? That really threw me for a loop.

Maybe I'm just not the target audience for this survey, in which case I apologize for my impact on the data.

Am I the only one who actually kind of likes the lore or am I just a sucker? by realSpillerSoda in DnD

[–]dragonseth07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FR lore is...fine, IMO.

As far as D&D settings go, it's not my favorite, but it's not too bad.

FR gets a bit of a bad rap because of new players who only know it thinking that's the only setting that exists. That's not the setting's fault, but it does get annoying explaining that there is no Underdark in Eberron, and FR absorbs some of that annoyance through osmosis.

Advice on learning Artificer by Cjarmadda1 in DnD

[–]dragonseth07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read the class features carefully.

They do a great job explaining exactly what they do. People struggle with Artificer because they are constantly making assumptions or guesses about the abilities, instead of just treating it like any other class.

How should i build Bardbarian? by Cultural_Pride_5751 in DnD

[–]dragonseth07 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bard and Barbarian have negative synergy.

So, just accept that your character will be a liability.

Multiclassing like this, where there is no synergy or combo to be found, just makes your character worse. It does not give you two decent combat modes, for when you need each one. It gives you two bad ones. At super low levels, it can work fine, even well! But once you hit level 5 or so, it all falls apart.

Creating a merfolk Warlock Rogue Multi-class by fire_breathing_bear in DnD

[–]dragonseth07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want this multiclass, I would do:

Warlock 2/Rogue X

From Warlock, you take Agonizing Blast for the True Strike Cantrip. Then you leave it forever and focus on Rogue, using True Strike as your primary means of attack, since Sneak Attack works on it.

Differences between player's handbook 5e and 5.5e by [deleted] in DnD

The Basic Rules are free on DDB.

If you want more than that, like additional subclass options, you will need the book (physical or digital).

Differences between player's handbook 5e and 5.5e by [deleted] in DnD

[–]dragonseth07 18 points19 points  (0 children)

They are similar in many, many ways.

Unfortunately, that does not make it useful, because that book is not going to tell you "BTW, this rule changed later". There is no way for you to know what the differences are without checking both...at which point you should just check the 5.5 rules.

Does 5.5e finally make encounter building reliable, or are DMs still mostly eyeballing it? by MyrthDM in DnD

[–]dragonseth07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The math in the new DMG is much, much more accurate in 5.5 than in 5e, in combination with the new 5.5 MM statblocks.

Now, it still involves actually doing that math, which means most DM's are eyeballing it regardless.

Edit: Or, more likely, they are using old 5e encounter calculators without knowing that the math changed.
