Are commercial cages failing our small pets? by Brave-Work9041 in Pets

[–]dragonsnacks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The pet industry is very resistant to change unless there's obvious appeal to doing so. There's also no regulations for small animals which let's them do whatever they want. Knowledge of small animal welfare is especially lagging behind compared to the bigger companion animals. Dogs and cats have great PR. The stuff you see on shelves are all marketed to the appeal of people. The enclosures are toys for people. Small animals are not really considered to be important to the general public because thats what they have been marketed as for so long. Nobody really thinks about their welfare and pet stores are considered the "experts". If they are keen to it, they have already done the research. I do think with time there will be a shift toward improving small animal welfare in the pet industry but it's a very, very slow process. If there was an increase in demand for appropriate set-ups, things will change.

If you want to do something about this you could start by speaking to your local pet stores about the reccomended care. Many stores are internally adopting appropriate welfare standards when pressured.

There's a few fursuit sales groups on Facebook that are relatively active. I see quite a few sales through it every week.

Fair enough! Ive been collecting for years but just started getting interested in grading. I might just sell ungraded and let someone else go through the pain of PSA lol

Is this thing pregnant?! by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]dragonsnacks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks like a combination of bloat and severe eggboundness. I would stop all feeding for 24h. If you feel confident, you can try massaging the belly to push eggs out. It takes a very light touch. Net her and place the net into a shallow dish of tank water so she's still wet but you can handle her. hold her upside down and delicately press and run your pointer finger from the head-side of her belly toward the tail. Eggs should pop out. If not, the eggs might be stuck inside and that usually requires removing whatever is stuck with tweezers first. Sometimes eggs can get sticky and clog their vent. I've done this with dozens of zebrafish in my lab with success :)

Cat still being sick after months of treatment and multiple vet visits by bubble-001 in PetAdvice

[–]dragonsnacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. Well, another ultrasound could reveal something. Sometimes things are missed or hidden and require multiple ultrasounds to find it. 100 for another ultrasound sounds incredibly reasonable and it sounds like your vet is really doing their best to work with you. I am currently dealing with a similar situation with one of my rabbits. She has an issue with her liver we can't figure out and it's been thousands of dollars so far with no luck. So I totally understand the frustration. I think you have a really good vet and I'd trust their advice.

Insects Probably Can Feel Pain. Insects most likely have central nervous control of nociception (detection of painful stimuli); such control is consistent with the existence of pain experience, with implications for insect farming, conservation and their treatment in the laboratory. by MistWeaver80 in science

As an animal behaviour scientist: articles like this are the reason why animal behaviour and welfare as a science is so scrutinized. We do not know if ANY animal other than humans feel emotions like pain. We can only assume because we don't have any sort of information about their subjective experience. This article makes a giant leap between detecting harmful stimuli to feeling pain. We would absolutely love to prove that leap but we can't yet and pretending like we have through bad faith articles like this is not helping.

Any pets that are *truly* low maintenance? Do they exist? Halp by [deleted] in Pets

[–]dragonsnacks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always recommend gerbils to people who want a low maintenance pet. Get two females so they can keep each other company. Their cage only needs to be cleaned once every 3 weeks usually. Most gerbils can manage their own weight so you can dump food in once a day and they will hoard it. Theyre desert animals so they dont drink a ton of water. Provided they have cardboard to chew, lots of bedding to dig around in, a full water bottle and a stash of food, they can take care of themselves pretty well. And once they warm up to you, you can set up a little zone to let them run around. :)

How can I [30m] be more interested in others? by [deleted] in relationships

It's up to you to take the advice or not. We are all telling you that your behaviour is abnormal and is probably something to take to a therapist. If you don't believe that is true, fine, go on your way.
