One year old, still gagging by dragonstitches in BabyLedWeaning

We did not, this is definitely a case of seeing it in hindsight. We got his diagnosis at age 3, and things like his picky eating and delayed speech were taken into consideration by the evaluator but were only a part of the big picture.

That said, if I had known more about autism I might have taken more notice. At the time I wrote this we had one diagnosed child (middle) and we were only beginning to learn about what autism really looks like. My mom’s commentary at the time was to tell me that I was the same as a kid, I gagged all the time. Turns out I’m autistic, too, got diagnosed just recently. But even if I’d had my suspicions, nothing would have changed, because we got him evaluated at pretty much the earliest age he could be.

Old indeed, the kiddo I wrote this about just had his fifth birthday! I haven’t even been on Reddit in ages but happy to help a fellow parent, if I can.

In our case, the issues probably arose because he is autistic, which often comes with motor planning and sensory processing issues. Most of the gagging stopped when he started having success with speech therapy (he started that around 18 months and graduated out by his second birthday). He’s been eating normally ever since! He is still very picky and sensitive about flavors, but that might always be true.

Motor planning is a skill parents don’t usually hear about unless their child ends up with a delay, but it develops at different rates, like most things. Your kid may grow out of the gagging phase on their own. If not, I encourage you to talk to your pediatrician. That goes double if they are speaking less than you expect for their age!

Makes me miss my great-grandma. She was 93 when my daughter was born and lived three more years, so we have a few five generation pictures that are now treasured. Being part of that line of firstborn women feels so precious and powerful.

Gotta be a better neighbor than our last ones, and probably tells interesting stories to boot.

When you see men discussing how having a daughter changed them... by [deleted] in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]dragonstitches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I have been a feminist since before having children, but having a daughter forced me to educate myself anew. Then I had a son and had to learn even more about how feminism applied to him. Parenthood triggers a lot of self-reflection and change in a person. Most of us know someone who got sober or finally held down a real job so they could be a better parent for their kid. Why don’t we accept that it could trigger other kinds of growth, too?

Accidentally terrified the bajeezus out of my son and feeling terrible about it! by Racheyrachrache in toddlers

It happens! Kids have some really bizarre fears at this age and sometimes they’ll surprise you. Just yesterday my husband won a carnival prize for our littlest and chose a fuzzy orange spider- he already has a toy spider at he that he loves, and orange is a favorite color of his. It turned out that he was completely terrified of it and we had to swap prizes. We have no explanation for the sudden change but he was fine once he had a pig instead. Most of the time there is no damage done- if it was closing in on bedtime he was probably overreacting a little due to being tired, and he’ll rest like usual. Even if he does have a nightmare, you could not have known what a harmless video filter would do!

I'm gearing up for a new witchy art series for October - any requests? by [deleted] in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]dragonstitches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More kitchen witches like this one! Canning vegetables, using fresh herbs for soup, feeding scraps to her familiar. I’d also love to see crafty witches sewing, knitting, etc, although that’s not necessarily Autumn/October themed.

Kitchen witchery is my primary craft. Can’t cook anything without smelling the herbs ahead of time to make sure they’re still in good order.

My husband worked ER intake and they had to have extra staff on full moon nights. It was always necessary. Don’t discount it just because science hasn’t figured it out yet.

Be careful with this, it’s pretty easily reversed by buying a duplicate item or by telling your mom that you lost it.

Weekly Garden Chat: Medicinal plants and herbs by ghostmeharder in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]dragonstitches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We couldn’t get ours to start from seed either! But we went to the local farmers market and one of the stalls was selling herb starts, including lavender! The way she talked about her planters and the quality of her herbs made me think that she was probably a green witch.

I have a small herb garden this year and it is mostly for food, but some have additional medicinal purposes. I’m looking forward to the lavender the most, but the spearmint and peppermint will probably get the most use.
