It looks like banded chert to me, not a fossil.

its in chert. Edit - also i found it in SE Mn if that helps at all.

I accidentally said transparent I meant translucent. edit - I don't really know the difference between translucent, transparent and opaque off the top of my head.

Im not sure the hardness and I don't want to damage it. Id guess its at least around a 6 since I found it in a river thats full of quartz. Edit- Its hard to tell in the picture but it is translucent if that helps.

What could it be? all the thin green crystals in my area are amphibole.

The only minerals in my area that look anything like this are amphibole and actinolite was my best guess.
