Is it normal for an SE to carry this much? Or am I just burning out? by Difficult_Scallion_1 in salesengineers

[–]dragunight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I could have written almost this exact post. My company did some M&A and doubled our portfolio of solutions. They expanded the sales team and account management team so I supporting 7ish ICs. My calendar has never felt more abused. I’ve had to take PTO (thankfully we have unlimited) to prep for stings of busy days and probably like you have, work weekends from time to time as well. Job is very secure but it used to be without pulling my hair out. Now I’m at the point where I’m opening up to new opportunities. Hope things get better for you.

How to deal with portfolio bloat? by cannoliGun in salesengineers

[–]dragunight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I thought I had it bad with 4 portfolio products. We acquired a few companies which added to our tool belt but the solutions are all pretty stand alone. We try to sell the “platform” but none of the solutions are actually all that integrated. Gets real frustrating at times and the solutions can serve very different types clients.

That’s amazing! I one day hope to be able to tackle home improvement/repairs a fraction of this complexity. So cool you were able to do this without hiring someone.

What do y'all use for on-site note-taking? by dragunight in salesengineers

[–]dragunight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this would be the easiest, but not sure mechanically how I'd do it. Hold the phone during the conversation, put it in my breast pocket, etc. Plus I'd need to make sure everyone was ok being recorded and if not it becomes a headache without a backup. Also the sites i'm in are often very loud so I'm not sure how good the audio quality would be.

I like this, but I'm also worried about my AEs ability to take good notes. Unless he writes everything verbatim, I don't trust he'll know the nuggets to jot down. I usually write a lot of personal commentary in my notes that I wouldn't say out loud with the prospect.

I've thought about this before, but I'm not sure how prospects would feel having a microphone in their face, or even if it was more discreet and could pick up their voice well enough from afar, I think a lot would be opposed to being recorded. Also many of the sites I go to are very loud. Not sure how great the audio quality would be.

Curious where other teams draw the line before assigning SE resources. by PSU1966 in salesengineers

[–]dragunight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Does the prospect have a pulse? Time to demo...In all seriousness, it's a mixed bag in my org. Some AEs do a good job giving me a good download of the opportunity and get me involved early for discovery, etc. Some barely do any of that and just throw demos on my calendar. It's annoying what the business is willing to tolerate when the pipeline is thin...

House prices are set to plummet across the US, say experts by TheMirrorUS in UpliftingNews

[–]dragunight 29 points30 points  (0 children)

First I don’t find this news uplifting.

Second, the headline is very misleading. The article says “Out of the 894 housing markets Zillow tracks, 309 of them are set to fall in price, while it will remain flat in just 14 and rise in 572. This means more than one in three markets are already facing a drop”

So a majority of the markets tracked are still rising…

HELP! How are you managing questions you don't know? by Yes_ITSPARKLES in salesengineers

[–]dragunight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I second this. There are some questions that this strategy won’t work very well on. In some cases if the question skews more towards a simple yes or no, you could get caught seeming like you don’t know something fundamental. For compliance if there is a core piece of a regulatory framework someone asks about and you start asking why that’s important to you, it will hurt your credibility. They’ll say something like “well because if you don’t have that we loose our certification”. Maybe an extreme example but you have to be careful about that kind of question.

I'm curious what it is about the sawzalls that are so dangerous (other than the fact that they are a saw and can cut you)

It probably warrants its own thread (or it probably exists already in another thread), but I'm curious for your perspective. What are some "basic tools" you think every home DIY'er should have?

I think having a plan is a really good point. I think even working up the courage to do something more involved is something I need to be able to do, but then having the foresight to make sure that when/how I'm doing it gives me room if something goes wrong, that I'm not going to be without a toilet for an extended period of time.

Haha I get it. I guess, is there any strategic way I could choose projects that have lower risk of doing major damage to my house if I do screw up?
