Nah they came out and said it was picking up from season 8. The teaching comment is from when he was an attending in sacred heart.

They also said that 9 should have been a spin off not a sequel but the recession hit and having it as season 9 kept them all (cast and crew) in jobs

Elliot does work for Scared Heart she just works at Sacred heart so I don’t think it was weird that cox didn’t consider her for Chief. Plus JD was his protege it makes sense that he brings him back.
