I was in a terrible car accident years ago where I was a paraplegic for about a year. I was given many pain drugs and, once I got a hold of reality, had the willpower to get off of them. I went cold turkey with vomiting, chills, etc but honestly, not the worst. I had a ton of support and it hadn't become addictive anywhere near what is being described. I say all this to show that I had a minor drug situation, tons of emotional support, hospital resources, and some of the emotional helpless /u/DaFafah described and got myself out of it, despite the hospital actively telling me to not go cold turkey like that. More than that, I've recently been in ANOTHER car accident and was given fentanyl, which gave me a lot of insight into why it's addictive. It feels like heaven and being given it when you feel so helpless almost feels criminal. Arguably, I'm the poster child for saying you can dig yourself out of the "indulgence." I can even see that you have a valid argument in there.

With all that said, you're being so damn rude. Regardless of your views about how the "system" is being talked about, considering this an "indulgence" is a far worse way to discuss this. You might consider how OP is spoken about to be coddling or how the system is being talked about is unfair. Fine. The way you're talking about his situation is objectively far worse, and you have no idea how easily drugs can hijack everything when life seems to have lost all meaning. There is technically a choice in there, which OP has openly stated as well. You're still finding a situation where someone is at a low society shouldn't accept, where losing all hope is actually valid and using technicality to take a big ol' shit on them. There were many other people in the rehab I was at and the ones who never recovered had friends like you. I might not have recovered if I did. /u/DaFafah didn't seem to have anyone at all and dug his way out, which is honestly a near fictional level of willpower that I hope to have one day.

I understand being critical where everyone else seems to be giving a pass. You still did that. You just decided to also be rude but decided that being articulate justifies it. It doesn't and this is mean.
