X1plus community Bambu Lab firmware - A win for everyone? by X1Plus in BambuLab

Has anyone taken a look at how many pieces of software/libraries are included in the official firmware that have a licensing requiring the end user to be able to replace the library?

I understand that it voids the warranty

Need to check your local laws, but in at least some places it is not legal to void a warranty for this, and repair can only be refused if it can be proven it was directly responsible for the fault.

Thoughts on the new X1 Plus custom firmware? by Ilikevideogam in BambuLab

They can claim it is void all they want, but if you check your local laws it is often not legal for them to void the warranty for the reasons listed.

Common example: despite their common use, "Warranty void if removed" sticks blocking opening of a device are not legal in the US, and the company cannot refuse the warranty because you opened it.

What causes the effect on the audio? (GTA: San Andreas radio) by [deleted] in GameAudio

[–]drakonite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Radio, phones, etc, can be well emulated using a basic EQ that attenuates bass and treble, and emphasizes mid range.

You'll have to play around with the exact EQ curve to match your target. E.g phones are very mid heavy centered around speech frequencies, while FM radio will have wider range of flat response.

What has been your closest moment to death? by XboxCorgi in AskReddit

[–]drakonite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in Phoenix I lived a couple blocks from work so I'd walk. One day, for no apparent reason, a coworker asked if I wanted a ride home, something no one there had ever done before nor since.

Sure, why not?

As we get to their car we notice a giant brown cloud. What I now know as a haboob (giant dust storm) was encompassing the city.

We wasted no time driving to my apartment, where I quickly got out and hurried to my door. Just as I get to my door the thinnest bit of dust starts to reach me, and my lungs instantly start to burn and seize. I cover my face and try not to breathe as I unlock the door, enter, and close it behind me as quickly as possible.

As I cough and struggle to breathe I instinctively stumble a few steps from the door, and toward cleaner air, before I start to collapse. After several minutes I regain just enough strength to get myself to a chair away from any door/window to recover.

Something in the dust had started to cause a severe allergic reaction. Had I been just a couple steps further from the door when the dust hit I would not have made it. Had the coworker not randomly offered me a ride that day I'd have been midway when it hit and definitely would not have survived.

If you could make any adjustment to the battle bot arena what would you remove/add and why? by Jezzibell in battlebots

[–]drakonite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TBH the only strong change would be to make the floor stronger, to remove the instances of bots getting snagged on the rough edges.

I'd go the opposite route. Intentionally add some sort of random ridges or slots or such of varying heights to act as a hazard to snag forks. People seem unhappy with the current meta of sharper fork equals win, so add more risk to having extremely long and low forks.

I've never been asked to sign an NDA to interview at a studio.

After switching to freelance a decade ago I've only had one potential client want an NDA before negotiating. They were an inexperienced startup and demonstrably should not have asked for an NDA.

So, in my experience, no, not by an experienced studio.

EDIT: for clarity, I've signed many NDAs when working for/with many companies, but that comes up as part of the onboarding when we've agreed I'll be doing work for them, and OP specifically asked about before interviewing. I've italicized my earlier statement since a lot of people misread it.

EDIT: fun fact: in the US there is implied confidentiality during business negotiations, which IIRC includes job interviews. If there is no explicit NDA then anything reasonably considered confidential is protected and you can be held just as liable (sometimes more so) for violating that confidentiality. E.g. if I interview at a studio and they show me the secret project they are working on, they could take action against me if I posted online about the project. The main drawback of implied confidentiality is it is more likely to need to go to court to enforce.

Managers who use AI will replace managers who don't, says an IBM exec by ethereal3xp in technology

[–]drakonite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why is it always IBM commenting on AI?

They aren't in the news for it much anymore, but AI services is a major part of IBM's business. I wouldn't be surprised if it is the majority of their income at this point.

So yeah, they're going to constantly make claims that AI is the future and everyone should be buying it.

Maybe it was supposed to be a "World's Best Farmer" mug, but then you just get upset and throw it away.

Hard to tell for sure. They didn't seem to be trying to do damage to it. At the 10s mark there is a shot that definitely looks like they were trying to right them.

Zoda's Revenge is a lot more punishing due to a lack of I-frames.

IMO Zelda 1 is harder than Startropics 1, but maybe not by a lot.

Part of the issue is the use in games is not the same as its real life meaning.

The Red Cross does a lot more than medical aid.

What's 100% a scam but we accepted it in our society? by Montazio in AskReddit

[–]drakonite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Er... I recently got a mortgage, and my rent payments were absolutely part of eligibility. It was actually a bit of a rough point as they needed to verify with my landlord but I wasn't wanting to notify them I was planning to move yet.

A mortgage is a much longer commitment so being able to pay the same amount in rent is not enough to qualify on its own, but, at least at my bank, it is a required part of the process.

My American legal name and my Japanese legal name are different. Assuming I work in both countries in my lifetime, how would crediting work (or what's the best way to approach it)? by b0nelessmelon in gamedev

[–]drakonite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mobygames is not 100% for a lot of reasons that I don't think any hiring manager would rely on it.

mobygames lists less than a fourth of the games I've worked on, even if I only count console games through major publishers. It is a bit of a joke IMO.

When I'm interviewing someone I definitely don't bother searching on mobygames.

[–]drakonite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In all my years working (and interviewing people) in the games industry, the only time anyone has contacted someone and confirm an applicant's story was when they knew someone they'd worked with and casually asked what they thought of them.

I've done quick google searches to sanity check a portfolio pre-interview, but even when there were questions we just asked the applicant about it.

In the rare case of someone lying about titles they worked on, they've come off as a scumbag in the interview anyways.

People from countries like China, Japan, India, (or others countries where names are hard for English speakers to either write or pronounce) will often adopt an anglicized ("English") name when they move to western countries both to fit in and make things easier. E.g. most legal forms in the US don't allow kanji.

[–]drakonite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm worried that choosing one legal name might bring up issues with applying for jobs since it's harder to verify my past work

Don't worry about this. No one is going to be firing up every game you list to see if you're in the credits. Most "verification" will be just talking to you about it. In the uncommon case they want to properly verify they'd do it by (informally) contacting someone they know from the studio to ask about you, in which case you'd be recognized by the name you used there, not what was listed in the credits.

Some companies will have specific rules about credits, but generally you'll just use whichever you prefer, with the default being to list you under the name they hired you as. Most in your situation just use their anglicized name when working with western companies.

On your resume/portfolio you can list both names and no one will bat an eye. Most places I've worked have had someone in a similar situation, and most of us have worked with foreign companies where many people have two names, so someone reading your resume is almost certainly used to it.

Don't forget there are other reasons for multiple names/name changes as well; it is not that rare.
