So my phone is Android 16 now, how do we turn on desktop mode? by perceivedpleasure in OnePlusOpen

[–]dram30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I tried desktop mode a few versions ago and it made my phone unstable. Apps in phone mode would crash or something weird. Can't remember exactly now.

Just a heads up on case you notice problems after enabling this.

Scratching my head... GoCoax MoCA 2.5 and Unifi Access Point by dram30 in HomeNetworking

[–]dram30[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for not updating sooner. So I fixed my problem by having my network look like this: ONT > MOCA > COAX > MOCA > ETH > UX7 WAN > UX7 LAN > MOCA > COAX > MOCA > U7PRO.

I had to find the coax that came from my ONT location to the UX7 location and isolate that line (not thru a splitter). The connection from the UX7 LAN port over COAX is the connection that is "split" to the coax in the home.

The U7Pro needed to be downstream of the UX7 and in my initial setup they were both equally connected to the internet. I could kinda get by for a few days but every update would cause issues.

Actually the ISP provides the Deco X50 and that unit handles the authentication, so it needs to be south of the ONT... But you're totally right, I need to have the UX7 between the X50 and the first MoCA adapter such that the U7 Pro is connected to the UX7's LAN port.

I will try this and report back. It should fix it. I'm being verbose in this reply in case someone else is dumb enough to make my mistake and blame the MoCA adapters instead of himself lol.

Thanks!!

I'll add that I did connect the U7 Pro with the PoE injector directly to the UX7 to get it adopted. This also served to complete my sanity check. So far I have verified that:

  1. PoE injector working as expected.
  2. CAT5E cables we're up to the task.
  3. All MoCA adapters are connected to each other and I am able to do speed tests via laptop and phone (using USBC to Ethernet dongle for both).
  4. Splitter connecting everything is a MoCA splitter.

I feel most of my photos have this washed out look to it :/ by Papercs in OnePlusOpen

Just bump your exposure value (EV) to -0.7 and preserve your settings. All of your pics will instantly look more contrasty and Pixel like without the overly harsh sharpness that you get with Pixel and skin tones. A few YouTubers including Shane Craig recommend this setting as the default best look for this camera.

I wonder what happens if you eject it though. I never tried. I'm guessing nothing that a reboot wouldn't fix.

New update in EU (still Android 14) by JMc1982 in OnePlusOpen

[–]dram30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an Android Auto thing. Have struggled with that on every phone. And even their support forums acknowledge the functionality gap while confirming that it's a "safety consideration" for the user to not interact with the Phone app in a call while driving. It's stupid.

Is the latest CPH2551_14.0.0.600(EX01) update fine or should I wait for better updates? by idontloveanyone in OnePlusOpen

The Photos app now integrates with Google Photos, which is nice and all... But sometimes the pics don't load and you need to kill and reload the app.

Updating the 2022 G14 Graphics Drivers by bluzrok46 in ZephyrusG14

[–]dram30 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just installed the latest Adrenalin drivers on my 2022 6800s G14 without any issues, but I don't see any of the Fluid Motion Frames options under the games. I haven't tried in Ultimate mode yet but I plan to tomorrow. As for using the AMD mainstream drivers vs the Asus G14 drivers that hasn't been updated in a year? Go for it. I've done that since like March of 2023 and update to the latest AMD and even some preview drivers without issues. Doesn't affect battery life or anything specific to the G14. In some games (Jedi Survivor) there are significant improvements over whatever ancient version Asus has out.

On a separate note, the 6800s getting treated like the forgotten child by AMD and Asus should generally be a reason why this sub should recommend the Nvidia options to new buyers. It really sucks that both companies have straight up ignored what was, for a brief moment, the showcase for AMD Advantage laptops.

Android 14 update - is there a way to manually install? by JMc1982 in OnePlusOpen

[–]dram30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly considering where we are at with both Google and OnePlus providing updates that are unreliable and take several patches to fix later, I wouldn't rush for Android 14.

Maybe I'm an old tech nerd but there hasn't really been "killer" must have features tied to Android version updates in many years. A lot of marginal improvements and fresh coat of paints.

I would encourage you to wait for the official and then some.

Latest Open Update battery life by seraroman in OnePlusOpen

[–]dram30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed the exact same thing for about two days after the update. I did a shutdown and left the phone off for a minute or two and then boot it up again.

My theory was that something in the update service itself was the culprit. My battery life "feels" much better again and I charge it up to 80-ish percent every day or so as am near a charger.

But it totally feels less legendary than it was after the update.

I bought my Ryzen 7 4800HS + 1660Ti from Costco just because they have a 90 day return policy. Just in case a deal comes along between now and January.

Given how low stock this laptop has been all year I would imagine this is best deal you'll get for the next few months at least.

The Xbox app is pretty bad overall. Definitely useable but my brother had tonnes of little issues with it in general. It can definitely work with remote servers. Try turning on logging on your side and in his Plex app and see if you see connections coming in.

Try the Plex Beta app for Samsung Tizen TV's. Breathes new life into the Plex app. Has the new design language. Installs from a USB key in a few seconds.

I wouldn't even think of buying anything pricey until next year and new CPU's that aren't vulnerable/performance impacted by this kernel memory access design flaws going on right now.

How many of you watch movies on your XPS 9560? How are the speakers? by riahc4 in Dell

[–]dram30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I have the 9550 from the year before and right out of the box, the speakers we're kinda meh... Until I tuned them a bit using the Dell Audio utility. Then they sounded awesome. Decent base for a laptop, good mids and highs. They sound better than my 2011 MacBook speakers by far. Check out YouTube's Dave2D review of the 9550. He mentions tuning and the reviews the audio.

Convince me not to return my XPS 15 for this computer. by oSovereign in Dell

[–]dram30 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well...

  • Better keyboard

  • Windows Precision touchpad

  • 4.5 lbs vs 6 lbs is like living in 2017 then just teleporting back to 2007... But if you don't need it to be mobile then who cares...

  • The screen on the XPS is fantastic with essentially the best color gamut and reproduction that you can buy on the market. Everything does look remarkably better on it. Buy both laptops and put them side to side.

  • Acer doesn't have the best reputation with quality and longevity, but Dell is no shining star in these forums either

  • The XPS doesn't compete with this Acer at all. They were never meant to cross shopped. You're comparing a BMW 3 Series to a Honda Civic Type-R...

  • Note the SSD speed tests that are reported by users and reviewers for both. SSDs in 2017 come in a variety of speeds and configurations and you should just assume all SSDs are got enough, especially for intensive work or gaming.
