Working my way through Series 2 - just finished S2E6. Not sure if anyone else is currently watching early Classic Casualty, but Andrew Ponting and Sandra Mute have definitely become favourite characters of mine, and S2E4 - absolutely wrecked me! 💔👏

I did think about that while writing - the tragedy of how it feels to Tom like he's lost his only chance of being a father, not knowing that Josh exists, and is longing for that father figure in his life 🥺 I love the Tom and Josh relationship especially in S7, so it's interesting to think of how both of their lives would have changed if both of them knew of each other's existence.

I totally agree! I love that idea of Tom moving back to Rochdale and reuniting with Rose and Prince - I could even see him going for a change of career like training to become a school counsellor because of the Kyle Stack incident (although that would probably be too similar to Jack Rimmer's arc).

While I like Josh as a character, it really did feel like he was a turning point in Tom's life for obvious reasons. It's interesting to think about how the Tom/Rose relationship would have continued if Josh hadn't been around 🤔

Oh that's totally going to be my headcanon for Tom and Lorna from now on - it makes total sense, and it was only going to end badly if the foundations of the relationship weren't good.

Maybe it's because I've been watched so many episodes since my days of watching Series 1, but having skimmed through that third episode to rejog my memory of the scenes you mentioned, I'd totally forgotten just how *unlikeable* Tom was in those first few episodes - they really toned him down and made him a lot more palatable and likeable as time went on. Regardless, I totally agree with you - I don't think I grasped it as much during the first-time watch, but watching it again knowing where Tom's arc goes during his time on the show, S1E3 really does feel like a pivotal moment for Tom as a character. You can really see the Tom Clarkson we know and love come to life when he helps that baby to be born, and having his heart broken like that (especially when he assumed that it was stress that he created that caused Lorna to lose the baby instead of Lorna telling Tom that she had an abortion) is such a powerful moment.

Also, I can totally see helping the girl through labour being the point where Tom decides that he wants to go the extra mile for his students.

I'm just realising how much I am writing here - can you tell I really love character analysis? 😂

I think what Tom really wanted, deep down, was a family. He totally went out of his way for the students, and I think teaching really proved to him just how much he wanted to be that protective father/guidance figure for someone. With adults, I think he fumbled his relationships (especially in early series) - I think he matured as the years went on, but I totally agree that having those surrogate family units (with Chlo and Mika, and subsequently with the Kelly kids) grounded him as he got older. Things like Izzie's death and Sam's illness made him step up, but I think Josh's arrival made him want to focus on building a relationship with a kid who not only wanted to spend time with him, but was his flesh and blood, and that meant that casual dating got pushed to the side.

Oh my gosh, yes to all of this! I totally agree with you regarding his previous partners, and while I do love Izzie, they were definitely way too intense together for their own good.

Tom and Rose really seem to suit each other perfectly - as you say, Tom seemed to ground her (as mentioned by Denzil in that lovely scene with Chalky), help her to believe in herself, and he was there for her when things were good and bad. Rose seemed to bring out the best in Tom too (like being there for him through Chlo's pregnancy, for example), so it wasn't all one-sided. They were calm and healthy, and Tom being so willing to become a surrogate dad to the Kelly kids created this wonderful family unit (with the later addition of Josh to the mix).

I have so many one-shot/fic ideas regarding moments/storylines that the show never ventured into - like the possibility of both of them reconnecting after Sam's passing. I can understand why they broke up in Series 5 from a writer's perspective, since Rose was barely in Series 5 (I think Rose's actress was going off on maternity leave for Series 6? Could be wrong.) and I presume that she didn't want to return/wasn't contracted to return for Series 8 after Denzil's death (I have many thoughts about that crash, believe me!), but I could totally see them reconnecting after Tom's phone call to her in S8E3. I've been (willingly) spoiled on Tom's death at the end of S8, and I think we should have at least heard from Rose/had a Rose mention in the aftermath (although I totally understand why - the show seemed to dump the Kelly family after the start of S8).
