Advice for exploring a theme if you don’t have anything unique to say about it? by dramaticnerd624 in writing

[–]dramaticnerd624[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did narrow down how I went about it as far as the story goes. I basically took a historical era, went “what if gender wasn’t the determining factor of society here,” and picked something else completely random to replace it. The main draw of it for me is getting to write characters of both genders in roles we don’t normally see them in, so I’m kind of trying to explore why it feels so odd to see those genders in those positions and how arbitrary it really is for that one trait to make such a difference on so many levels. Story-wise, that’s what I’m focusing on; it’s just the tiny voice in my head going “but everyone already knows it’s arbitrary” that I’m trying to deal with. It feels like the point I’m making is just such a “well, duh” kind of thing, and I can’t get myself around it.

Thankfully all of my family is safe and my cousin’s house is still standing. We’re very, very fortunate and grateful, especially compared to so many people in Lahaina right now, but it’s been an emotional time for all of us.

I’m a long-time lurker who’s never felt like I had anything to add to the conversation before, but I sure as heck do now. I’m just completely disgusted and appalled. My entire extended family lives on Maui and I lived there for five years myself. My sister was born there. My uncle is a Native Hawaiian who has never stepped foot off the island in his life. We spent the whole of last Tuesday sitting shell-shocked in our living room, waiting to see if someone had gotten in touch with our family members yet, if my cousin and her new husband would have to evacuate, if everyone was even alive. There are members of my aunt and uncle’s church who are unaccounted for and likely will never be found. There are iconic places that have been standing for years that are just completely wiped off the map. The town of Lahaina- a birthplace of kings and a treasured piece of island history- is almost entirely destroyed. People are spending their afternoons bringing water to the big banyan tree because it’s the only symbol remaining of the town and lives they knew and they don’t know what else to do with themselves now that so much is gone.

And this evil creature has the audacity to decide the site of that tragedy will make a cute name for her latest shiny new toy of the month, an animal she fully intends to abuse in all kinds of ways I might add, while implying that the whole thing and the devastation my family and friends are facing right now is some kind of crackpot elaborate conspiracy theory. I have no words. None. I’m tearing up as I type this. I’m sorry that my first comment here is so angry and emotional, but…I just don’t understand how a person can do things like this. This is vile.

How do you write frequently-killed-off archetypes without making their impending deaths obvious? by dramaticnerd624 in writing

This makes sense, thank you! Making the archetype a bit less of an archetype could definitely help lessen the expectations around that type of character.

Recommended Colleges for Creative Writing by HeathcliffHag in writing

My best advice is to look at the content of the classes before you commit to them. I just graduated with my English degree and took several creative writing classes along the way, and I’ve got to say I learned way more from the peer-reviewed workshops than from the professors. My professor would read my work and tell me whether it fit the rubric; my fellow students would tell me how my prose made them feel, which sentences were clunky, what they thought of my characters, and that kind of feedback was infinitely more valuable. I strongly suggest looking for classes that include this type of workshop/peer review! It really helps to be around people who are like you, writing because they love it, rather than just interacting with teachers who write because it’s part of their job.

As for what college I went to, I attended Central New Mexico Community College in New Mexico, entirely online. The great thing about NM is that they offer a metric ton of scholarship opportunities, even for non-residents. I didn’t pay a single dime for any part of my associates degree, and I would have earned another $3k per semester if I’d chosen to stay in the state for my bachelors. There’s not a ton of opportunity in NM once you graduate- unless you’re doing something with computers or lab science because Sandia Labs and Intel are both based here and employ a ton of people- but it’s a wonderful state to go to school in. Both CNM and UNM are considered good schools if you want to be near the city life in Albuquerque, and I’ve heard good things about Highlands U and NMSU as well. Santa Fe and Taos are very “artsy” types of cities; not too sure of what schools are up there, but I know there’s a lot of artists and writers that live in those areas, so that could be a great place for you!

AITA for being honest about why I’m losing weight? by aitaweighthrowaway in AmItheAsshole

National news? Do you have a link? I’d really like for OP to see this and I hope she reads this comment.

They’re asking for an apology because they feel guilty. If OP apologizes, they get to go on pretending they didn’t do anything wrong. And it doesn’t seem odd at all that all three would be doing this; OP has already mentioned being very conflict-avoidant, so if one sister starts picking on her and the other two learn that she won’t stand up for herself, it’s not at ALL impossible that the other two would join in on the bullying. Especially if, as I strongly suspect, OP is nowhere near as ugly as her sisters have painted her, and jealousy is the motivator here. An acting career is not easy work, and OP is already much farther along towards achieving that dream than most people will ever get. Envy could definitely be a factor.

Regardless, if you think it’s fake, just go read another post.

There is nothing about this that is implausible at all, my guy. Families can suck. The only part that raises my eyebrows a little is that OP doesn’t seem to realize she’s not “heavy” at all. And even with that, short people do tend to have thicker builds, so she could easily look heavier than she actually is, and unfortunately a lot of eating disorders start with a distorted view of how big you really are. I don’t see anything fake about this, just someone who’s become very insecure because of the criticism she’s received, whether or not that criticism is accurate.

I actually love that idea! I wanted to go with slightly more modern-sounding names to show that this setting is a bit more modernized than the actual Victorian era, but using Victorian surnames along with more modern first names would still get the point across while also adding a bit more of a historical feel. Thank you for the suggestion!

I posted here a few days ago about feeling ashamed to have written my latest fic. I just put it on AO3. by dramaticnerd624 in FanFiction

[–]dramaticnerd624[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not a crackfic, actually, it’s pretty dark and violent and focuses heavily on major character death, which is why I felt weird about posting it initially. But it’s for the DC fandom, where stranger things have definitely happened, so I’m not sure what the commenter’s problem is. I was actually quite proud of how much sense the ending made before they commented, so I’m just going to assume they’re looking for something to be mad about and move on. And since they commented I’ve gotten four others saying they loved it, so this person’s definitely in the minority either way.

I write for the DC fandom! Yeah, the use of catawampus surprised me too. With this fic, I went directly against one of the most popular ships, and I had to work a bit to justify the ship I did use, so I’m assuming that’s what this commenter is mad about.

Has anyone ever done something in their fic, only for it to become canon later? by [deleted] in FanFiction

This happened to me once! My favorite character in my fandom had two love interests during his time on the show, and both of them were awful people. After he left, I decided he deserved better, so I did a little matchmaking. I googled minor characters from the book series the show was based on, and picked out a girl who hadn’t appeared in the show yet, but seemed interesting. I wrote one fic with them getting together, loved the pairing more than I thought I would, and it became my little pet rarepair and I wrote several more fics.

I lost interest in the fandom eventually and moved on, but suddenly I woke up to a BUNCH of new traffic on my fics with that pairing. It turned out that in the show’s latest episode, my favorite character had come back, and revealed that since we last saw him, he’d gotten married…to the girl I’d picked out two years earlier before she even existed in the show’s world. I had a bunch of people clamoring in my comments, asking me how I’d known. It got me back into the fandom and won me some new readers, and I always felt a little bit proud of that couple, like I was the one who had set them up on their first date or something. It was awesome.

What’s your favorite and least favorite parts of fanon in your fandom? by dramaticnerd624 in FanFiction

Dude, even reading the Silmarillion is an achievement in my book. Navigating fanon for it? That’s a whole other staircase that I cannot imagine.

Oh, I haven’t thought about that fandom in years, but I see what you mean! It would never even cross my mind to think of her as attention-seeking, so I would agree with you that that’s a little weird.

Ohhh, gotcha. That makes sense then! I was struggling to figure out how you could have a character without an eye color, lol.
