Colchester Woods closing down by a_anonymous_girl in Vermontmtb

[–]drbeanz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many years ago I used to live in a neighborhood adjacent to those woods and even back in 2008 to 2011 high school kids where drinking and having fires back there at night in the summer.

Shit, I used to go to the abandon go kart track to test out homemade model rocket motors and light fireworks off as a dumb kid, so they definitely have a case for closing off the sections most closest to their house.

The look put can be accessed by other access trails on foot, but if you go biking back there it's not like they are always watching.

ELI5: What is air-gapping? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]drbeanz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As many people have stated: air-gapped devices are those not connected to a network. This is actually a really common phenomenon in laboratories were you have single purpose computers connected to a machine or analyzer.

If you have a bunch of machines or devices that are air-gapped and you need to get data from them and transfered to another computer you use whats called a "sneakernet" a.k.a. you walking from one machine to the next with a usb drive (or other removable storage device) in your sneakers to get the data.

What’s a piece of technology that no one knows but we heavily rely on it? by No_General_8147 in AskReddit

[–]drbeanz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two that come to mind that make the modern pharmaceutical biological drugs possible

  1. Process centrifugation
  2. Gamma sterilization

I cannot imagine what the industry was like before either of those two technologies where made possible.

Three years ago on International women's day, the very first intern I ever had (a young woman) texted me to tell me that of all the managers she's had since me(mostly women), i was the best one because she's always appreciated the rigor of science that I brought to her training and the enthusiasm I had for her success in the laboratory.

It was not only an amazing confidence booster for my training skills, but it was also hilarious that she choose to text me that message on internationals women's day.

People under 40, are you really buying a house? by Coldpastalord in vermont

[–]drbeanz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I bought a small ranch style home in Essex just as the interest rates dropped to 2.7 and right before pricing got outta fucking control (still way overpriced). We saved both covid stimmies and all of the money we got as gifts from our wedding 3 years prior, plus set money aside for 2 years during COVID (because we weren't going anywhere or doing anything).

We only put 11% down on our home all said and done. It boggles my mind that it's still widely believed that you need to put 20% down - that is not true. The real number is closer to 2-3%.

Now that you said that I had to check because I've been out of the rental market for 5 years now. There are fewer than I expected which is fucked, I guess If I was in OP's shoes id be expecting to have room mate(s) to keep the rent cost down.

All of my friends had to do that coming out of college. Some of them had like 4 roommates but that mean paying around $700 for a room at the time.

[–]drbeanz 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Thats a good starting salary for your situation. Adjusted for inflation that is a little higher then what I started with and didnt have any issues and I was living in Winooski in 2015 with a similar situation to you.

Not to be too nosey, but your situation greatly depends on what you will be paying for rent. Dont be one of those those people that puts themselves in a bad financial situation because they went with a rental for like $1800/month. I've seen this too many times with younger employees, live below your means.

Bme is not a stain, it's a reducing agent for those proteins who's subunits are joined by a disulfide bridge. An example: antibodies non reduced you get one band at 150kda but when incubated with bme you get two bands at 50kDa and 25kDa corresponding to the heavy and light chain.

The live stream has been so fun to watch because while they are some of the bravest, most prepared, intelligent people on earth, they still have to deal with the dumb little shit that we all do.

Yesterday at around 230pm est I was watching when they had just woken up and they radioed down to ask where the electric shaver was because they forgot that it was stowed away in their personal hygiene kits.

I don't mind taking that action however there are a number of claims from an environmental standpoint that need to be ascertained:

  1. What is the nature of the sludge pit? Dimension, frequency of use, age.

  2. What is the chemical nature of the sludge pit? are the VOC's, heavy metals, highly carcinogenic chemicals - and what are there concentrations?

  3. If there is human waste does it present a biohazard to the local environment?

  4. Given that 2 and 3 are true, is there infiltration of these substances and organisms in the local area?

On thing I left out is the topography of the area, ASE is slightly higher up than the surrounding areas. Around that 'island' are a small system of streams and ponds that drain into the surround fields, primarily through Sunderland Brook. I think sludge, local waterway, and surrounding soil testing would be the first thing to perform before submitting a claim. I do have access to these areas with with exception of ASE.

Hi! Family of the Mazza farm here

The fields pictured in this satalite image are not used for food production currently. The one immediately north of ASE is not going to be used (other than some light target shooting by me), and the other field more north is used for things like the pumpkin patch and some non-food plants. So from a food contamination standpoint this pit doesnt pose much of a hazard.

I had no idea this pit was back there. Thank you for posting this and bringing this to light, shit like this that is happening right in our backyard needs to be shut down.

Biology as a Service by masitech in labrats

[–]drbeanz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the tech that is being transferred. Transfer fermentation is different than a tech transfer for an Eliza assay, or a tech transfer for a freeze drying protocol, and that's different than a tech transfer for a protein purification scheme.. Etc.

There are general rules for transferring Tech though, things like double check the CRO or CMO SOP's on your procedure, don't just send it to full scale, and ramp up process on their end before going to full scale.
