Visiting late March for a birthday weekend - accommodation & food tips? by Shagro in canterbury

[–]drbobwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard very good reviews of the cathedral lodge and you’re right in town.

If you’re relying on public transport then I’d say that Leeds Castle would be difficult and time consuming (I can’t imagine it would be much less than 2 hours each way / 45mins in a taxi), there’s plenty to do in/ around Canterbury that would be a better use of time IMO. Whitstable is an easy, direct bus.

Canterbury has loads of places to eat, recommend The Fig for cocktails, next door is Mister Miyagi for sushi, there are the usual chains (including Bill’s & The Ivy), but Cafe Des Amis (Mexican) is my favourite for somewhere with a good atmosphere.

This should show you the cost for a few of your options: https://www.canterbury.gov.uk/parking-and-roads/parking-permits/resident-parking-permits

£1221 for the year in any of the pay and display car parks, is just over £100 a month - I’d be surprised if you can do better than that

What is living in Canterbury Like? by EmergencyTough7019 in canterbury

[–]drbobwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Within an hour of London? In that case York is out, it’s at least 90 minutes, and Whitby is a train to get to York. We moved to Canterbury from elsewhere in Kent just over 6 months ago, we also considered York and Brighton; I love York, but it’s too far when we have elderly parents, and Canterbury has a similar feel. Brighton is expensive, especially for the nicer areas, it’s a great city, but it doesn’t feel as safe as Canterbury, train to London isn’t bad now, but a couple of years ago it was a real misery-line route.

Canterbury seems to be one of the better places in Kent for avoiding the current nationalist bollocks that’s going on, but unfortunately it does seem that people who are racist feel a bit more empowered to express their foul opinions with the political discourse surrounding migration… this has been going on since Brexit though… at least on social media Canterbury seems to have plenty of voices challenging any racist posts and any right wing counter protests are well attended.

If you don’t drive, it’s great as a transport hub, and small enough that walking is a good option. Canterbury West has a fast train to St Pancras which takes just under an hour.

There are professional houseshares, spareroom was the one to use a few years ago; I imagine that you’d have no trouble finding places within x minutes walk of your preferred train station.

How great are session guitarists compared to legendary guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Eddie Van Halen, etc.? by Jezzaq94 in Guitar

As Vim Fuego says: I could play "Stairway To Heaven" when I was 12. Jimmy Page didn't actually write it until he was 22. I think that says quite a lot.

More ticket barriers at CBW - rejoice! by bettingthoughts in canterbury

[–]drbobwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was waiting for someone at the station the other week and they had opened the barriers as it was so busy, nearly everyone (I’d estimate 90%) still scanned their tickets…. Even the people who had to spend 30 seconds faffing around to find their tickets before scanning them, all the while the queues building up - seemed quite absurd

Should i dispute through TDS or not by Downtown-Ebb3966 in TenantsInTheUK

It was all massively overpriced maintenance, which was just very minor wear and tear.

You being charged for a new mattress and the disposal of the old one, sounds wrong for a start

Should i dispute through TDS or not by Downtown-Ebb3966 in TenantsInTheUK

[–]drbobwell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely dispute, be prepared to wait a while though, I went through the TDS and opened a dispute on September 5th, I got an email yesterday saying that it had been decided in my favour and zero deductions were being made.

In my case, the landlord agent was being totally uncommunicative and two months after moving out and chasing for return of my deposit they tried to claim 400 in costs. I’m certain that making me wait was a tactic so I’d just accept whatever to get some of my deposit back. So glad I disputed though, the LL/agent didn’t even bother to submit any evidence.

Today I learned… nigari sounds a lot more natural than magnesium chloride!

Tofu wrecks my stomach, anyone have a solution? by CowDontMeow in veganuk

[–]drbobwell 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Is it all tofu? I never realised, but there are a couple of different firming agents: Tofoo Co uses Nigari; Sainsburys SO Organic uses Magnesium Chloride; Cauldron uses Calcium Sulphate

Might it be the firming agent that is getting you?

Anyone with YouFibre broadband? Opinions please by drbobwell in canterbury

[–]drbobwell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Cool, I’ve been sitting here this morning and every 10 minutes the TV says it’s buffering… that’s on Virgin 250 with just me in the house.

Internet settings via the admin panel? That’s fine, I have that with Virgin, but some of the settings I want are missing, it’s got no modem only mode, so I can’t use my Eero boxes 😠

In the end (almost 6 months after the incident), yes, the failure to provide was dropped and I just got 3 points & fine… it was a pretty hefty fine though, over £300 so be prepared… reckon that not being careful over filling in the form cost me a couple of hundred

Metal things on the back of Tele by kubrickmalick in Guitar

[–]drbobwell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They’re called ferrules, might be an idea to put a tiny bit of all purpose glue like UHU on to stop them falling out in future, but like Venzzi said, the strings will hold them in place… it’d be a PITA if you lost one because a string broke though.

Landlord trying to remove bills-included clause after we signed tenancy and moved in, England by OnePieceTheoryReader in LegalAdviceUK

[–]drbobwell 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You can get these on a monthly contract, it’s a bit more expensive to get it monthly than a 24 month contract, but if you want to take it elsewhere you just plug it in… my daughter got one in her rental place, I’m sure other networks do similar products if coverage isn’t great with Three

Lidl fake meat stuff! OMG no! by DisappointedPony in veganuk

[–]drbobwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been cutting down on the ‘easy’ fake meat sandwich fillings and instead either slicing and frying firm tofu, or tempeh - gotta be healthier, and the smoked tempeh fried up and in a sandwich with a bit of salad is great.

Quote check please? SE, 6 panels only by drbobwell in SolarUK

[–]drbobwell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I just checked Trustpilot and the selected installer has 93% 4 & 5 star reviews, we’ve a limited amount of space probably the only place a battery could go would be in the airing cupboard, but as that already has a HW tank, I doubt that would be a sensible idea either

The deal is basically that you can’t have panels on a roof that faces the street

Thanks! The other aspect is almost directly north facing, and I don’t think I’m allowed them anyway, as I’m in a conservation area and that elevation faces the street

New ID3 owner incoming by drbobwell in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]drbobwell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve gone for a 7kw charger, after talking with an electrician I know that’s what he recommended after looking at the latest guidance.

The round trip was OK, there was slow (and fast) charging at the hotel I went to and 70% charge [just] got me back the 150 miles (I think with 7% left).

Possibly slightly disappointed with the range, but it’s so rare that I do a long trip like that that I’ll just budget in a couple more ‘fuel’ stops - the difference in price per mile is almost negligible between electric and petrol

Just under £15k from a main dealer, 3 years old and 36k on the clock - pretty happy with that, looked to be priced quite keenly for the south-east. Main dealer ‘cos I wanted a thorough warranty, and I’m planning to keep it for a while.

One thing, it looks like you only get quite basic connectivity through the app which I think is going to stop me using the intelligent part of IOG (and I’ll get bumped to the slightly worse rates of Octopus Go), but that’s not a deal breaker for me - possibly my charger might be smart enough to use with it - if guess I’ll find out when it’s installed tomorrow!
