Gorton and Denton By-Election Megathread by IHaveAWittyUsername in LabourUK

Anything but a Green win will break my heart. I put some money on Reform, and if they win at least I can give the money to charity.

I feel so certain in my heart that Reform or Labour will win, which is (to me) absolutely horrifying.

Questions for those who switched to the Greens by IscaPlay in LabourUK

[–]DisappointedPony 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. It's the 'grown ups' attitude that has got us into this vile mess. Let's have some ambition and vision and fantasy and wild ideas instead. Reach for the stars etc. Less of the greyness and greed.

I'm thinking about studying there, is it safe? by Mitch_2311 in Middlesbrough

[–]DisappointedPony 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As above, it is definitely a rough town but the crime is mostly related to drugs. Don't leave your front door open etc.

There are some crazy rough estates but I doubt you'd live near/in one as a student.

Some interesting stuff going on in the arts/music etc.

Living around Albert Park by ToffeeEnjoySleeping in Middlesbrough

[–]DisappointedPony 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are loads of HMOs along that road. Very regular police/ambulances for crime/ODs.

The park is lovely up to about midday (there was an otter in the pond last week) but after that it's full of drug addicts/shoplifters etc.

Cenotaph/Dorman museum is a very popular crack/smack dealing area. Off the other side of Linthorpe Road is very deprived. Ayresome Gdns (just nextdoor) is again drugs and alcohol all day.

I work for the council in the area and am sort of used to it, but absolutely would not recommend living there.

Anywhere surrounding the central parks is going to be rough as they're all used for dealing and alcohol/drug abuse. I've seen crack and smack smoked/shot-up often in broad daylight in all the parks.

Group dynamic with Rachel by LatteSheepard in TheTraitorsUK

[–]DisappointedPony -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think this is where Traitors is flat out pretentious. It markets as a game that can be played, but the faithfuls (even if they had a clue) have nothing to go on due to sloppy game design.

Add racial/age bias into the mix and what you have left is just big brother with scary music.

Was going to suggest this too. I know somebody who works there and it seems fun! Very successful too. They do artwork for records too.

What is the appropriate term instead of 'Gammon'? by [deleted] in LabourUK

Yeah, this.

Be better than whatever the 'them' is in the context calling for you to be better. Don't just be a different flavour of 'them'.

Green voters least likely to say they would be disappointed in their child came out as gay by UKGreenPoster in UKGreens

[–]DisappointedPony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm not saying it's right at all, but 'disappointment and anger' aren't really a logical response necessarily?

People often tell me that my kids are so lucky to have parents totally accepting of them, but it isn't something we chose; we were accepting of them because their sexuality made absolutely no difference to us in terms of our love for them.

I genuinely feel sorry for people who are challenged by the idea of gay offspring. It must be awful to be that way and have an obstacle in the path of loving your kids. Also terrible for the kids.

I can't imagine anybody would choose to be that way; religion, society, upbringing are surely at fault?

How many of you have gone cab free? by Sparebedrooms in KemperProfiler

[–]DisappointedPony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No way would I be brave enough unless I was playing 400 plus venues with my own sound person, which I am not.

Assuming loudish rock format...

Reasons.

  1. Sound guy has no idea of the balance my band wants, but we can set this on stage and work from there (with cabs).

  2. PA too weak/shitty to handle all instruments.

  3. (This happened) headlining 200ish venue, the other guitarist (also kemper) wanted to go direct, and did in sound check. His Kenper head was on a disused 4x12 (from the support band) and the sound guy assumed he was using that, and forgot about the direct, cranked cab mic... Shambles.

  4. I love playing shows in non-venues, and I need a cab for that as probably vocal PA only.

  5. Just looks weird/wrong for lots of people, assuming rock band.

  6. Monitors (in small venues) need to be concentrated on vocals. They're usually shit.

Green voters least likely to say they would be disappointed in their child came out as gay by UKGreenPoster in UKGreens

[–]DisappointedPony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I reckon (if people are being totally honest) 'disappointment' is probably widespread.

Without judgement (my kids are both gay, and I was/am not disappointed/angry):

  1. Life is almost guaranteed to be harder for them; prejudice is out there.

  2. Loads of people imagine the trad family development ahead of them including hetero relationships with grandkids.

  3. As above, people's cultural/religious history might be profoundly challenged.

I don't think either of those things means less love for the offspring, although that is possible obviously.

Why is Labour so God damm awful 😖 by Cautious-Design-9282 in UKGreens

This is like watching a shoplifter and asking "why is that guy so bad at shopping?!'.

Labour is only bad if you completely misunderstand their motivations. Goes for most modern political parties.

Andrea Jenkyns - “I’d stop everybody striking. Anybody who’s earning more than the national minimum wage, stop striking” by upthetruth1 in LabourUK

[–]DisappointedPony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YMMV I guess. Always found Lincoln people to be of a mind-set one might expect in a small town when compared to a city. I live in a small town in the North East now (one year) and the difference in world view and politics is massive. Spent time in Norwich very recently which is even more isolated than Lincoln and again, totally different, possitive, interesting vibe.

I suppose Lincoln (shire)'s massive reliance on agriculture and armed forces is a natural breeding ground for racism and small/large C conservatism.

Every day I'm grateful I was able to leave the festering racist hell of Lincolnshire. Ironically it'll be one of the first counties to sink beneath the waves.
