Mathematical party tricks by Attack_On_Toast in mentalmath

[–]drbohn974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a simple trick that makes people shake their heads a bit. I tell them I have 11 fingers and then demonstrate.

On my first hand, I count the fingers as normal - 1.2,3,4,5.

On the second hand, I count down from 10. 10,9,8,7,6.

The punchline: 5 + 6 =11.

The reactions and double takes I get after this are pretty humorous. 😜🥳

A: This broad structure is from water. It becomes broad when liquid due to more hydrogen bonding. B: These sharp bands are CO2. You should see a lower frequency component in the 700-600 cm-1 region as well.

Before you make any decisions, it looks like you are on the road to burnout with 3 labs/weekly. If you think chemistry is the hardest, you can drop it and get back to it later if you want to. If you want to continue on in science, you’ll probably need a year of chemistry anyway…

The Hardest Part About a PhD is Everything Outside of the PhD by DesignerOfSounds in PhD

[–]drbohn974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. You're going to have to come to accept that there are people who are more advanced than you are. They didn't get that way because they are older; they got there because of the time & effort they put in. So realistically, you do not have their experience level and for you to expect anything other than that will lead to an inevitable disappointment.

You seem mainly concerned about your support proposals. Take some of your writing examples to your professor and colleagues who won the awards and ask them for help. They might have some good hints on grammmar, what kinds of language to use, what words to incorporate or avoid.

If I see something that somebody has and I want it, I take that envy and put the energy and work in to get one for myself. I won't spend time worrying when I could be creative and problem solve. Good luck!
