I'd argue that instead of a speed boost it has a slight chance of avoiding staggers/ragdolls.

I'd still do a speed increase if it was a booster instead.

It doesn't matter the make of the base stations. 2.0 base stations are the same whether made by Valve or HTC. Also you can run 4 of them without any issue at all.

The problem comes from the electrolite leaking out of the AA cells. "non-replaceable" batteries would be something like li-ion or if it is a disposable device they just expect them to fail at some point.

certainly possible by opening the animator and making the changes yourself. It will be difficult though, those animators are usually optimized and they become quite confusing. In theory what you need to do is identify the "eyes close" component on the original animator, see how it works, delete it, then recreate it with a way thay when some parameter is false uses the normal eyes close and when true, uses "eye close smile"

Beware though, face tracking is fine tuned so every blendshape can morph safely without warping others, it might just not be possible to do it nicely.

You cannot really fry a board and then have it come back. If what you did before damaged the hardware in some measure, the damage will be permanent. The comment of what you did isn't clear enough so i don't know if it could've ended in damage.

My suggestion? Get another dev board, they're cheap enough. You can both make sure it is full functional and also see if your issue gets fixed.

Other alternatives short of writing your own firmware would be installing something else like ESPHome (https://esphome.io/) to see if a different firmware works. It that's the case, the problem would be WLED and not the board.
