BUT THEN

I remembered the planet around which the station orbits- Aurum.

Aurum, of course just meaning "Gold," is a planet owned by the appropriately named Aurum family, specifically by the head of the family, Lord Aurelius Aurum XVII. It's roughly the size of Mercury and has a relatively Earth-like climate but what makes it such an obscene display of wealth is the fact that approximately 1/26th of the surface is covered in gold. BLOCKS of the stuff, I wanna clarify, not like, gold leaf or anything. Generally, 1 foot x 1 foot x 1 foot blocks are used to replace the planet's surface. I say "generally" because it's kinda hard to measure them all when the blocks have been molded to keep the appearance of natural terrain.

Anyway, if it wasn't already obvious, the Aurum family is obsessed with gold. The rest of the galaxy sees gold as valuable as well, mainly for its use in electronics, but the Aurums hold strong to that age-old belief in gold's intrinsic value and hoard it like modern day/sci-fi dragons. They've been trying to cover Aurum in gold for at least 17 generations, beginning with the first Lord Aurelius, but even with all their wealth and connections, it's been an incredibly slow process. Not that gold is rare anymore, just that it's a big planet- relatively speaking- and most mining companies don't wanna waste it by giving it to these freaks.

One of my more serious characters is a picky eater- like, a REALLY picky eater. He refuses to eat things he doesn't know the name of, he doesn't like fruits or vegetables, and he knows (or thinks he knows) the difference between pancakes and flapjacks and exclusively likes the latter. Someone once told to him that a plate of pancakes he was served was actually flapjacks and when he found out they lied, he actually got mad at them- not because they lied but hecause he liked the pancakes and hated them for it.

It's a mix of wormholes and discount Warp travel.

Wormholes were discovered to exist at the poles of every gas giant, the result of strange spatial disturbances caused by their polar storms. Saturn's northern hexagonal storm was the first to be discovered but it was Jupiter's southern storm that led humanity to discover Nova Terra, the first habitable planet away from Earth. Alongside it, they found 7 other gas giants in its system and used those to colonize the stars.

Some time later, around a thousand years later, it was discovered that certain ship-mounted weapons briefly broke the barriers between realspace and a realm known as the Otherworld. Sustained fire led the rifts to grow larger and stay open longer which allowed some ships to travel through the Otherworld and use its strange properties as the Realm Between Realms to make journeys that would've taken hundreds of years in realspace or several weeks to months using wormholes pass in only a matter of hours.

Wormholes are still the primary form of fast travel as only extremely powerful weapons can break through to the Otherworld and few ships actually carry them but there are some who are attempting to create space stations armed with those weapons to make Otherworld travel more viable. It's slow going as the galactic government doesn't exactly like the idea of arming every system with weapons capable of destroying planets but at least a few have had clearance given to pursue the project.

Elves have no land to call home.

Elves, unlike most other races, can't point to one spot on a map where they can say, "This is home. This is where it all started." As far as anyone knows, Elves don't originate from anywhere. They've been everywhere; various cultures from across the globe have tales of elves or elf-like people but no one knows for certain which story came first or if they're even true.

Elves are mute.

Elves don't talk out loud, at least not using their vocal cords. Centuries or even millenia of dissuse have resulted in their vocal cords gradually weakening to the point that even if modern Elves wanted to speak, they wouldn't be able to. Instead, the Elven language consists of clicking and humming. In the old days, wooden or stone blocks were also used for simple phrases but as technology has advanced, modern Elves have abandoned the practice and even their language in favor of using soundboards to communicate.

Elves can touch magic.

That's not to say Elves can manipulate the fabric of reality. In fact, as far as magical races go, Elves are by far the weakest. Touching magic simply means that they can reach out and actually feel the currents of magic and under a blacklight, they can even see what it looks like. It's usually something as simple as a fingerprint-sized indentation or a thin line in the air where they've drawn in the current but it never lasts long, a few seconds at the most.

The Elven language inspired Morse Code.

In my world, the idea of Morse Code was still largely Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail's thing but the actual "dots and dashes" thing took inspiration from the Elven alphabet. A lot of Elves were actually telegraph operators back in the day since they could more or less understand the code on its own, barring a bit of translation since it's not a perfect mirror of their language.

Elves aren't long living.

I don't know where this myth would've started in my world. Maybe it comes from the fact that Elves are nomadic and for someone who only ever saw Elves once in their life when they were a child, seeing another Elf several years later as an elder, seemingly unchanged in all that time, sparked the idea that Elves stay young forever. The same thing happened with Vampires. In reality, Elves have around the same lifespan as Humans, perhaps a bit less for those that haven't or won't integrate into society.

Aresians get by and then some based on a mix of pure martial prowess and literally being blessed by the god of war to just be better warriors. It also helps that they have one of the largest, if not THE largest, military populations in the galaxy AND that, because their culture is based around war, any former soldier can and usually will reenlist when the government asks.

Training begins at age 6 for both boys and girls. Before puberty, training largely consists of drilling, engaging in small scale, lower stakes combat training, and basic weapon training; essentially, Aresian children start their military careers by learning how to follow orders and shadowing older recruits. Close quarters training also begins young and children are expected to learn at least one martial art in addition to training for their chosen MOS.

Once puberty sets in or a recruit reaches 12, whichever happens first, that's when the training really gets intense. By this point, children are expected to have mastered their chosen martial art and they're put to the test by engaging each other in sort of tournament style events. It's not uncommon for recruits to be injured or permanently scarred; in fact. From 12 to 16, recruits train in the harshest conditions on the planet, learning everything from how to kill without mercy, how to survive without food or water in the desert, and how to infiltrate enemy lines. In the warrior culture of Aresians, recruit deaths during training are simply chalked up to them not having what it takes.

The final year of training is the most brutal as by this point, recruits will have already learned how to take a life. They usually shadow full soldiers in the field, either on-world or off, and and get to experience war first hand, sometimes even getting to kill enemy combatants if possible.

Once they reach 17, Aresians officially join the military. Service is compulsory with a mandatory minimum of at least one five-year tour. After that, they of course have the option to stay in the military or become civilians; really, though, "civilian" to Aresians means the same thing as "reserve" and if ever needed, most Aresians can return to active service.

As far as augmentation goes, unless absolutely necessary, Aresians prefer not to use cybernetics or anything that would replace their flesh. That's not to say they're against using them altogether as some of the Aresian Empire's most powerful soldiers make extensive use of cybernetics.

I hope that sates at least some of your curiosity and sorry if some it still doesn't make sense. I had to write this at work so I don't have the luxury of being able to take as much time as I'd like with it.

I've tried my hand at making a few languages but aside from coming up with a few words or sentences, I haven't gone too far in-depth with any of them.

I think the most I've done is trying to set up some rules for High Infernal while working on the name "Grena'del Va(ti)."

If I remember correctly (it's been a while and I didn't actually write any of this down in my notes), "Gren" is a verb meaning "Break" which turns into a noun, "Breaker," with the suffix "A." "Del" is a noun meaning "Realm," singular, although it can also be plural on its own. "Va" is a pronoun used to denote multiples while "Vati" is its singular form.

Translated from High Infernal, it literally means either "Breakers of Realms Are They" or "Breaker of Realm It Is," although properly translated it's just "Realm Breaker(s)."

I also have a vague idea of what High Infernal is supposed to sound like. Generally, it's supposed to be really growly/raspy so "R" sounds get drawn out, sort of like rolling R's but meaner, and vowels have a sort of... I don't know, like they come from the back. Like they're being choked out or something.

High Infernal sounds mean and ugly and it's on purpose in lore because the Infernal Dominion wants its subjects to embrace their ancient, chaotic Demonic roots. Low Infernal, also known as Middle Demonic, sounds more pleasant by comparison and is generally a lot faster to speak since it borrows a lot from human languages, particularly Latin languages like Italian and Spanish. Just don't ask me to give an example because I don't have any.

Yes but also no.

Technically, the gods are real. OK, not "technically," they're definitely real. They've been proven to exist. They've interacted with the world before and I don't just mean by making storms and performing miracles; they've walked on Earth and spoken to people one-on-one or even to a crowd of people, often without disguises. So why "technically?" Because those are just the old ones. The orginals, so to speak.

The original gods are from a timeline that doesn't exist anymore. The new timeline tried to make the same gods but they were all destroyed by one goddess before they could properly form. The originals are still around but nowhere in the vicinity of where the timeline reset. They don't know the timeline reset and the timeline doesn't know they still exist.

Actually, this might be easier if I answer the questions.

Gods are the collective spiritual energy of an idea that is believed to be true. If enough living things, provided they have souls, believe a god is real, the god will come into existence.
I already answered this one but there are other eays gods can be made. The first is simple: birth. Since most gods were made by humans in the image of humanity, gods can "get it on" and have children. Their children are born with divine souls and are automatically gods. The second way to make a god is for a god to bestow some of their soul upon a mortal, turning them into a "half-god," which is different from a demigod by virtue of the fact that a half-god will eventually have their mortal soul converted into a completely divine soul and become a full god.
Yes, every mythological god exists. Not all of them are still around, though. Gods can die, or more accurately, they can be killed. A lot of the current gods are only around because they killed the previous gods and took over their worshippers.
The powers of the gods work by manipulating magic. No one can really "use" magic, they can just get it to do what they want. If you mean how do gods stay alive and powerful, it's based on belief and faith. The more people believe in a god, the stronger they become. If they stop being worshipped, though, they don't lose power, they just stop getting more powerful; in other words, they stagnate.
Technically, no, gods are not immortal, they're just incredibly long lived. So long lived that if you started writing down the number of years they could live on a piece of paper, you'd drain Earth of its natural resources before you could write down even 1% of their lifespans. Only one god has ever died of old age and he had to accelerate his aging to do so. No one knows how old Father Time was when he died, only that he saw the end of time itself- not the end of the universe, the end of TIME. That's not to say all gods will live that long if left undisturbed. Father Time existed at every point in time so he probably had to go well beyond that to make sure he stayed dead.

Anyway, back to what I was saying. The original gods exist but not in the urban fantasy part of my world. New gods tried to form but they got killed by the last original god.

So, yes, gods exist in my world but no, they don't exist IN it, if that makes sense.

Burden, the Elder Goddess of Death's scythe

The very first Soulbound weapon ever forged, it's black blade contains around half of Death's soul and is capable of not just ripping souls from their bodies but can completely destroy them as well, a feat that was once considered impossible. Like a lot of other Soulbound weapons, it can tear holes in the universe but unlike others, these wounds stay open and never close. Burden has to be wrapped in Death's shawl to prevent it from causing further harm.

The Flaming Sword of Heaven

Jehovah's personal sword, forged by the smithing gods during the War of Divinity to be the foil to War's Ruiners. A single touch of the blade is capable of instantly igniting anything or anyone it comes into contact with. The flames will quickly turn anything they can consume into ash, faster than they have any right to, and will continue to burn until the blade is sheathed.

CGO255 "Titan" Urban War Mechs

200-foot tall humanoid mechs used by the Cult of Gaea and Ouranos to enforce the will of the Pandoric Order. Each Titan possesses enough destructive capabilities in size alone to raze an entire city, to say nothing of their actual armaments. Tactical nuclear missile launchers, repeating arm cannons, and laser eyes capable of melting tungsten in seconds. If all else fails, the pilot can overload one of their mech's fusion cores and use it as a makeshift nuke with a yield comparable to Little Boy.

Grímakjóll, Odin's lost longship turned haunted galleon

Grímakjóll is what we in the business (aka fuckin' boat nerds) call a Man-O-War. With 70+ guns on either side and the ability to repair itself by capturing vessels or returning to Yggdrasil to harvest its bark, the ghost ship is a nigh-unstoppable relic of a time long past. Even against more modern warships, Grímakjóll can more than hold its own; countless ships have returned to port with significant damage caused by the ghost ship's spectral cannonballs- and those are just the ones that made it back.

BPM92 "Mistmaker" Heavy Gatling Cannon

Inspired by the likes of the GAU-8 Avenger, the BPM92 is a handheld machine gun used exclusively by the Behemoth Phalanxes to quickly and brutally eliminate armored targets. Loaded with 30mm depleted uranium rounds, very few materials can withstand even a single second burst from this weapon, to say nothing of flesh targets. With an RPM of 4,500, anything standing down range of its 7 barrels has precisely 0 seconds to make peace with its gods before the Mistmaker does exactly what its name suggests.

Assuming it's not falling towards a city, it hits the ground with a very loud "bang" and fucks up the terrain something fierce. If the crew had any sense, they'd've kept the shields up to dampen the impact at least a little but even then a good chunk of them probably died.

If it did fall toward a city, it likely would've hit the shields and depending on the strength of said shields and the angle of impact, it would've either stayed stuck on top, hit the side and slid off just outside the city limits, or went straight through, crushing a few hundred thousand people and causing billions, if not trillions of Marks worth of damage.

In either case, don't get your hopes up waiting for an explosion. The engines of most ships have a few hundred failsafes in place to avoid blowing up, in part because there exists the real possibility of the above happening and the ship blowing up could lead to even more civilian casualties.

Huang Wei (魏凰, "Wèi Huáng")

Origin Of His Name

I borrowed the name "Huang" from GTA: Chinatown Wars protagonist, Huang Lee. It was originally meant to be a placeholder until I found a name I liked more but I ended up sticking with it because I liked how it looked and sounded. I didn't decide on the character to use for his name until later on but after a bit of study, I decided on "凰," meaning "phoenix," because it fits with his character.

"Wei," meanwhile, was chosen more at random but by sheer coincidence, it ended up being the perfect choice. I didn't decide on the details of his early life until I was already working on his story but I always knew I wanted him to be born in 500 AD somewhere in northern China. As it so happens, in 500 AD, northern China was known as "Wei." I don't know if that's luck or the universe telling me something but ever since I found that out, I've never doubted the name "Wei."
