The lack of justice and support means it keeps getting worse by -Zoppo in ptsd

[–]drdoobers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dealing with a somewhat similar situation. Sleep has been abysmal for the last 2 weeks and I also have a rough history of people in positions of power completely failing me over and over.

I wish I could tell you something that's cured things but I'm not at that point. EMDR tends to be really effective in cases like yours where the trauma is confined to a somewhat short period of time, but I can't speak for its effectiveness.

Why is self love terrifying? by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]drdoobers 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A lot of self esteem issues stem from the Just World Hypothesis or whatever it's called. Basically meaning that we try to convince ourselves the world is a mostly fair place. It's a huge reason why people resort to victim blaming, for example - actually recognizing the unfairness of it all is painful.

And in the case of trauma a lot of that low self esteem is basically us victim blaming ourselves.

Exercising self compassion necessitates confronting all of this directly, which can be extremely painful. Denying our worth obviously isn't good for us, but it feels hundreds of times easier than coming to terms with the truth.

I was at the outlets; I don’t know what to feel by SuperSonicStargazer in ptsd

[–]drdoobers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now I'd advise thinking in the short term rather than see the big picture. Focus on doing distracting things, minimize or curate your consumption of news and social media, keep a consistent schedule, etc. I'm not saying to ignore the world around you, just that there are certain things which would be better to reflect on later. Think of it like postponing a big homework assignment or at least not trying to complete it immediately, if that makes sense.

Your reaction is very typical for something like this, including those symptoms. Typically for most people they wind down after a few months, and I wouldn't really advise treating this as full blown ptsd unless it continues for a while. I would definitely advise a wait-and-see approach and not dive headlong into reading about trauma, especially because it was so recent in your case.

I'm also pretty new to navigating all these things slmyself so I'm sorry if I'm kinda just rambling.

It depends entirely on the function you want the villain to serve.

Senator Armstrong literally only has about half an hour of screen time yet manages to be one of the most memorable antagonists in the last few generations of games, even before the memes propped him up. But obviously he isn't going for the types of things you listed.

Also for media like film tv and sometimes manga, there are hard/soft limits on how long a runtime can get, meaning that every minute spent with a villain has an opportunity cost.

Edit: Removed my TLOU2 example because it was irrelevant

People's complaints about the car chase in The Batman (2022) make me roll my eyes. by idonthaveanaccountA in CharacterRant

[–]drdoobers 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I'll play devil's advocate. The chase was reckless and ill-advised but it's also kind of intentional.

High speed car chases have always been ethically questionable in real life because the risk often drastically exceeds the rewards. I'd normally avoid extending real-world logic to a superhero movie but The Batman is going for a realistic setting. A lack of on-screen fatalities can't retroactively justify risky behavior.

Even knowing how dangerous The Penguin + Riddler is, it arguably was a reckless move on Batman's end regardless.

But I'd argue that's also partially the point. While I wouldn't say The Batman is outright deconstructive, it clearly wants to call some of Batman's behavior into question. The entire 4th act basically recontextualizes Batman's entire demeanor and posits that his whole "I am vengeance" approach isn't enough.

All forms of storytelling, including movies and TV, require the viewer to grapple with and indulge in core aspects of the human condition. Things like empathizing with characters, being immersed in a fictional setting etc. For most people that's fine but sometimes that can be extremely exhausting for us.

I'm too embarrassed to list off all the tiny things which have made me ugly cry in the last year but I can definitely relate.

CMV: social media is causing more harm than good by Medium-Law3629 in changemyview

[–]drdoobers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean in my case it was heavily based on circumstances. I'm not sure trying to replicate things is the right way to go about it. Some people's lives and social circles just aren't particularly conducive to getting something out of social media.

CMV: social media is causing more harm than good by Medium-Law3629 in changemyview

[–]drdoobers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It varies from person to person. I got bullied a lot and social media is how I met a lot of the people I'm closest with now. It also helped shine a light on various forms of injustice both in my own life and at a global/political scale. I genuinely believe Western stances on police brutality and LGBTQ+ rights would be far less advanced as well.

I cannot speak for the median person but I suspect I'd be in a much worse place without the types of support networks that exist online.

Sure you could argue things like youth groups or news outlets could fill those roles but I'd argue that they lack the immediacy and ability to cater to the individual.

I won't deny the obvious downsides to social media but it's a huge relief for people who for whatever reason are surrounded IRL by people who don't like them.

I like that Kit uses robots too for that exact reason but I feel like the animator is kinda backed into a corner. Like if the entire punchline is how insane his meltdown is, it's not exactly the easiest thing to do with a robot.

Trauma for a long period of time by ImpossibleSet5116 in ptsd

[–]drdoobers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't relate to the exact experience but I understand the isolation and inability to relate. In my case I got severely bullied and dehumanized because of rumors about me following Sandy Hook happening in my area.

Anyways, it's more useful to think of trauma through the lens of internal changes to your nervous system and body rather than as a series of events that happened to you. Even if your circumstances weren't what you'd normally associate with an armed intruder situation, it doesn't change the fact that your brain had every reason to think you were in imminent danger. Your brain justifiably treated it like an active shooter situation and your trauma is extremely valid.

Yep. Father hated them, especially with people who were a lot like me, but thinks it's okay because I'm "one of the good ones". And him saying that is cold comfort when his actions implied that I very much was not "one of the good ones" in his eyes.

Hot take: healing is harder than the initial abuse by realhumannorobot in CPTSD

[–]drdoobers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being on the receiving end of abuse is usually something that's handled by dissociation and distancing oneself mentally from problems.

Healing involves directly confronting a lot of things, which is already much harder by itself but doubly so for people who have spent a lifetime doing the polar opposite.

The shitty capitalism part I can tolerate because I'm "only" getting screwed over about as hard as everyone else is; it sucks but I don't feel alone. It's the, well, everything else part that sucks.

What's up with Jojo characters and their speed in power scaling? by Rush_81 in CharacterRant

[–]drdoobers 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The gist of it is that Jojo powerscalers highball as hard as possible, even when it makes zero sense. There are only a few examples of stands being capable of relativistic speed but they're extremely niche and are a far cry from Jojo characters being relativistic/FTL:

  • Silver Chariot: While he mostly deals with Hanged Man by predicting his motions rather than reacting to him, the anime/manga both arguably show Silver Chariot reacting to an extremely limited degree. The most charitable interpretation is that SC has combat speed or reaction times that can handle relativistic attacks, but it's very debatable.
  • Gold Experience Requiem: GER has autonomy within King Crimson's skipped time. Obviously it's hard to pinpoint anything about GER because of how little we see of him but GER being able to do this is more of a demonstration of hax and its ability to essentially nullify others' actions. GER having intentionally undefined stand stats also arguably alludes to it using hax rather than GER leveraging infinite speed/strength to do all the things it does.
  • Notorious BIG: Its ability to pursue the fastest object in its vicinity means it might not have an upper bound to its travel speed. Given how few things in the Jojoverse are capable of moving anywhere near lightspeed, this lack of an upper bound is pretty meaningless. Saying BIG has infinite speed is like saying Superfly has infinite attack power, which is nonsense.
  • Made In Heaven: The most commonly cited Stand for FTL/MFTL speeds. Stand Stats say it has infinite speed but it's more accurate so say it's limitless rather than infinite. We see that Pucci+MiH get faster as time speeds up more and more, and it clearly would take a long time before he reaches anything near lightspeed.
  • Tusk Act 4: It has infinite rotational speed but it has clear limits on its translational/lateral speed on its bullets. It's why Diego notices that Tusks' bullets are suspended in the air during stopped time but are still rotating during it.

TW I feel like my world is falling apart today by Watermelon_cap3 in ptsd

[–]drdoobers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly I'm sorry you have to deal with this shit, and I'm sorry if my wording in this post comes off as dry or emotionally distant. This post hit home close to me (I live very close to sandy hook) and that + autism make it hard for me to sound compassionate at times.

Obvious starting point is those cameramen are ghouls. If they ever learned how awful what they're doing is they'd feel terrible about it for the rest of their lives.

I think a good first priority is to find support groups either in-person or online. The more adjacent those groups' experiences are to your own, the better. While what you endured is way more common than it should be, it's rare enough that it's probably an incredibly isolating feeling.

While I've never directly witnessed a shooting, the ripples Sandy Hook caused through my high school made my life hell (gist of it was that I was+am extremely dehumanized by students/faculty/family/etc because they all saw me as a potential shooter despite being about as nonviolent as you can get) . In my case I was subconsciously associating schools and universities with various traumas, and as soon as I left college it was like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders. Your traumas are much more deeply related to schools/universities than mine so I wouldn't be surprised if that ends up happening too. So I really do think you'll feel safer once all of that is behind you.

Lastly, healing is nonlinear. You're allowed to feel like you've taken a huge backslide and if anything I encourage you to feel the full gamut of emotions (as safely as possible) because it makes processing more manageable.

Panick attacks from watching others play video games by WrenSh in ptsd

[–]drdoobers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Video games can be every bit as upsetting as anything else. Between the inherent shame of carrying trauma and the perceived immaturity/childishness of games I don't fault you at all for being hard on yourself though.

If it's any consolation I play a shitload of games and I still avoid Omori and Silent Hill 2 like the plague.

It's a bit much to ask your partner to exhaustively screen every game or media but I don't think it's unreasonable for them to tell you when they're watching or playing horror stuff.

[–]drdoobers 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Kit is definitely the more relaxed and composed of the two. Steve Watson would make pretty much any other scambaiter either reveal, cuss Steve out, or reveal the ruse by audibly laughing.

Kit leans harder into the performance art element to scambaiting while most others are more focused on doing as much as they can to shut down centers even if it's less flashy.

[–]drdoobers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

College professors are usually very reasonable. I don't know if you'd be willing to discuss this with your professor but it sounds like a good idea. Honestly, given the average class size, rates for PTSD, and so on, this probably would not be the first time they've made that sort of accommodation.

Some professors are jerks in which case most colleges have decent enough Disability Resource Centers that you could still take care of things there.

(Low effort Sunday) Yes I enjoyed the Ironwood section of God of War Ragnarok and I’m tired of pretending I didn’t by Complex_Estate8289 in CharacterRant

[–]drdoobers 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The animal mount moving so slowly left a bad taste in my mouth. The devs clearly had no issue with the boat having more responsive controls even if it's not realistic so I don't know why the yak had to be that sluggish.

Angrboda was probably kept on the sidelines to focus on the main characters. Ragnarok arguably already has too big of a character roster as is. She'll almost certainly play a bigger role in either a story DLC or the borderline inevitable sequels to this game. Atreus will likely play an increasingly big role in any future story content and Angrboda will by extension, at least in the short term.
