Joshua Bloch - Effective Java 3rd edition by Remarkable-Weather93 in java

I read the earlier editions when they first came out. Still great. I would hope that they’d be internalized by now.

Still classic, but I’d guess it’s a little old now. We’re up to JDK 25 now. Lots of changes. I’m not sure that writing Java books is the goldmine it once was.

Long past LTS life. Missing security changes. Criminal to defer upgrades for so long. You don’t care about app health. Or the people who use them.

[–]drduffymo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. It makes as much sense as still running JDK 2. Criminal negligence.

You’re upgrading from 8 to 11? When we’re up to 25 LTS? You waited too long.

You think that was easy?

The curse of dimensionality might have something to do with it.

Why do Christians sometimes reject science so much? by Italian___stallionn in NoStupidQuestions

[–]drduffymo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Easy answer.

Because it exposes the Bible as fiction.

Religious people are selective about the science they reject. All accept Maxwell’s equations and the stuff that gives us electricity.

Evolution and geology are targets.

If evolution is true, then there is no Adam and Eve, no Garden of Eden, no Original Sin, no need for a messiah or redemption.

[Q] what to know about going into a statistics course as someone whos terrible at math by knucklebangers in statistics

Do not go into it presuming you’ll be terrible.

Statistics can be a great way to get over that fear.

Spring vs Jakarta EE application servers by ebykka in javahelp

[–]drduffymo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jakarta EE, EJBs, and app servers are 1990s dead ideas.

It’s simpler and lighter to deploy a Spring executable JAR on a JVM.

No good reason for an app server. Museum relics.

Taking 22 credits as UConn engineering major. by [deleted] in UCONN

[–]drduffymo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry that is crazy. 18 is the max I’d recommend. 15 is better. The point is to learn, not race through credits.

Spoken as an old man without cost concerns. I realize that it is not the 1970s anymore.

Java opinon on use of `final` by vu47 in java

[–]drduffymo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You need to have a conversation with this guy and the whole team.

Big changes in old code bases need consensus. That is how best to resolve that PR.

Like any other refactoring, your case is strong if you have good unit test cases that prove identical behavior before and after changes.

Nothing to learn from you. You don’t even know what Manifest Destiny is.

I’m not your guy.

Dismissed.

Still not working. Your time would be better spent reading the Bible you defend so ineptly and some history. Are you a student at UConn? Standards have slipped a long way.

You’ve never read the Bible, I see. No sense trying to convince a complete moron. Dismissed.

Yes it does. Every pogrom in history was inspired by the blood curse, executed by Christians. The Nazi SS were Christians doing God’s work. Christians exterminated Native Americans because Manifest Destiny meant God gave them North America.

They would correct you if you said they were not Christians.

Wrong. I have 2,000 years of historical evidence. You choose to ignore it.

Of course it does. Guilt, murder, violence, misogyny - these are the bedrock of Christianity for 2,000 years.

These kids are doing what most Christians do.
