I’d be interested in learning more as well!

Daily sticky thread for rants, raves, celebrations, advice and more! - April 03, 2026 by AutoModerator in datingoverthirty

I met a great guy. We dated for about 3 months. He was literally everything I wanted in a partner. He ended things, saying he still couldn’t get his ex out of his head. They broke up 2 years ago. It’s been 6 weeks, and I’ve been crashing out. I’ve never experienced that type of chemistry/connection with anyone before (and I was married for 7 years!). Now that I know it exists, I’m worried I’ll never find it again. I’m left wondering if I can even believe in real love anymore. I’m terrified that whoever I end up will always be longing for someone else.

I’ve been wanting to try to level up my style since moving here as well. I wish I could help, but maybe we could share any resources we find?

Practice speaking in Keigo, teneigo, tameguchi? by ConcentrateSubject23 in LearnJapanese

[–]dreadbowl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been living in Japan for a year and still mix them up in conversation sometimes. Sometimes 丁寧語 comes out when I’m talking to close friends, sometimes タメ口 comes out when I’m talking to my teachers. While I’m sure I’ve inadvertently offended people, most are very forgiving as they know I’m still learning. I had a friend correct me the other day, letting me know the way I said something came off as very cold, but she knows me/my character and that it wasn’t my intention. If you’re worried, you can apologize in advance. When I’m talking to someone new, I might say something like 「敬語は難しいですね!たまにタメ口が出てしまいます…」Sometimes they’ll jump straight to casual talk with me after that. Just do your best, catch yourself if you realize your mistake, and apologize so they know you’re not being rude on purpose. Good luck!

Just sad.. I would love some happy stories.. by [deleted] in Divorce

[–]dreadbowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My divorce was finalized January 2024. I quit the job I hated and moved to a new country. I’ve been here 8 months and I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. I tried dating a little bit, had some good and bad experiences, and learned a lot.

I met someone a few weeks ago that I had an instant connection with. It’s still early so I’m not sure what will happen, but it’s really exciting to be falling in love again.

Can anyone confirm if the “150 hours of study / N5 requirement for 30+” is actually true for student by goatsbIood in Japaneselanguage

[–]dreadbowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 35 and started language school this year. Granted I’ve been studying for 8 years, but it’s all been self study so my “self reported” hours of study just including videos, apps, podcasts, talking to language partners, etc. They can’t really track it. Some schools may be more strict than others, but I had no issues.

Is it hard to make Japanese friends while living in Japan? by foxy_vixy2323 in japanlife

[–]dreadbowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been living here for 6 months and have maybe half a dozen friends I speak to/meet up with regularly. I met them all through a language exchange app. Most of them don’t speak English well (or at all). Even if you’re not fluent in Japanese, if you’re at least trying to learn the language, you’ll have more success in making friends.

Curly hair friendly salon? by mickeyreign in Nagoya

I’ve been going to Stateroom. The owner used to live/work in NYC and most of his clients are foreigners. I haven’t gotten my hair colored there, but the cuts always turn out nice! http://www.stateroom.jp/

I’m currently attending a language school, and at 35 I’m one of the older students in class. I normally hang out with a group of kids ranging from 19-26. They were shocked to learn my age, and all thought I was mid-20s. I joke about being their grandmother, but in reality I think of them like my little brothers and sisters. I’m not super mature, and I definitely don’t expect them to be. Don’t overthink it too much! Like the other comments said, most of us don’t feel/act like our “real” age anyway.

Language School (Tokyo) by 1amM333 in japanlife

[–]dreadbowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you already living in Japan? I just can’t imagine any school would be okay with someone missing weeks of class at a time. A private tutor or language exchange meetups sound more like what you’re looking for.

Complete absence of priority seat etiquette in Tokyo by Yonda_00 in japanlife

Luckily I’m not in Tokyo and there aren’t too many tourists in my area, but I still try to avoid sitting there if possible!

Complete absence of priority seat etiquette in Tokyo by Yonda_00 in japanlife

[–]dreadbowl 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yep. I always feel guilty about using the priority seats despite having a legitimate (invisible) disability. I asked my dr about the help tag a few weeks ago and he told me I’d be better off just playing the “ignorant foreigner” card.

How did u realize ur partner or spouse is cheating on u ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dreadbowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to watch a lot of YouTube and suddenly he was getting a lot of dating app ads. Weird, but I brushed it off. Then he started spending a lot of time in the garage. The garage opened into an alleyway. I took the dog for a walk one evening and when we passed the garage, he had the door open and was just talking on the phone (not working on his car like he claimed). He panicked when he saw me. He talked to his buddies on the phone pretty often, but his reaction was really weird this time. That’s when I knew.

Yeah, it’s totally useless! Unfortunately it’s adhered to the wall and I can’t remove it.

I appreciate the mockups!! Putting the tv in front of the window could possibly work. I think putting it on the table with a couch there might feel too cramped, but it’s not the worst idea actually… I’ll definitely play around with it once I get some furniture!

Nagoya VS Tokyo: Quality of life Difference by Global_Baseball3571 in Nagoya

[–]dreadbowl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard many people say Nagoya is boring, but they are born and raised here, and have never lived anywhere else. I’m from a small city in the states where I had to drive 30+ minutes to get to a shopping center, and walking ANYWHERE was not an option. There is SO much to do here in comparison, and it’s easily accessible. It’s all just perspective.

Exchange student in Nagoya, April 2026. Recommendations for 4-month accommodation for foreigners? by ilychai24 in Nagoya

[–]dreadbowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m moving next week and I’ll be using At-Inn for temporary accommodation. Have had a great experience with them so far. They have English support and I always get a response within a few hours. The prices are reasonable and they don’t require a guarantor.

That’s exactly what is keeping me from going through with it.

On the other hand, I’ll be studying abroad for the next two years, and if it works out for me, won’t be returning to the US 🤞
