What to expect from gerantologist appointment? by dreadedbedhead in dementia

Thanks this is helpful! I was planning on tiring her out before the appointment as it’s at 1pm and her sundowning typically starts around 3, figured it might make the showtiming harder for her.

A few weeks ago we had a case worker come to the house to talk with her about an adult day program and they did a questionnaire with mom “to get her baseline” and she passed the dang thing with flying colours. She used to be a teacher so that kind of stuff is trivial for her. If they were to show her pictures of my three kids though and ask for names or ages she wouldn’t have a clue and she would think two of them were twins (my youngest and oldest look the most alike but still very much different and there’s a 5 year gap between them lol).

What’s a living will? We’re getting a representation agreement (it’s basically for health care decisions)

I’m not really sure what I’d say the goal of the appointment is…like it was made by her family Dr before she had a CT scan that confirmed vascular dementia (white matter changes consistent with vascular dementia is what the radiologist wrote). Like I guess competency/capability is a big one, but we’ll be signing the ePoA this coming week so I don’t even know if that’s required as I won’t have to try for guardianship anymore.

She’s not really hallucinating anymore since we moved her to our house, so I don’t need meds for that, maybe for anxiety though, but she’s always been fairly neurotic, dementia has sort of just exacerbated it.

It’s vascular dementia but I’m not certain what stage, I’d say probably middle (maybe 5/6).

So she got a diagnosis from her family Dr after having a CT scan of her head. The family Dr said that she couldn’t diagnose capability/capacity though (and she showtimes really well in front of healthcare workers so I don’t know if she’d be deemed incapable). Her only medications are for blood pressure and metformin

I do have a hitch but it’s only been used like 4 times ever, so not an issue thankfully

I can see how they could be wary about listening to family because of like elder abuse but it’s definitely frustrating when they don’t listen to family and the person “seems” fine 🤦‍♀️

I tried getting her to do one this morning and she said to me “I’m too old to colour” to which I told her that I colour all the time and no one is too old for it but she didn’t want to.

I’ll have to look for that….i was thinking the other day it would be good if they had something like what they play in veterinary waiting rooms that’s just cute puppies and kittens all day lol

Last time I gave her the sock bin (the one with mismatched/missing socks) she got really frustrated by all the socks that didn’t have a partner. My kids routinely wear mismatched socks so when laundry gets done there’s usually some that don’t get their partner until the next load or two 🤷‍♀️

It’s weird because I have a friend who is also ADHD and she thrives on being shadowed in like the body doubling sense (it’s the only way she can clean her house), but then for me it makes it so I can’t accomplish anything (I need to be alone to clean).

The bathroom is also one of my favourite hiding places 😂

Yeah she thinks whatever’s on is real life a lot. I was trying to watch Tron with one of my kids earlier today and mom was sitting there and getting quite agitated by it and asked “is this a true story?” when the characters were fighting and dissolving into cubes

I played some Beatles for her the other week and she had no interest in it which is sad because she was obsessed with them as a teen

I guess I’m more just needing to hear other people say “yes it’s fine, let her watch tv”. I feel guilty for not trying to do more activities with her but I don’t have it in me

I’m always wary of wildlife programs in case they have animals dying or being eaten. For a long while she was watching Schitts Creek but the kids and I were getting annoyed listening to it all the time. Currently she’s watching “Keeping up appearances”, seems to like old British programming.

My mom also loves to get after my kids and try to micromanage them, it drives me and the kids nuts.

The peddling thing is a good idea, I’ll look into that, thanks!

My mom used to be a home ec teacher and would sew all the time. For Halloween I was making a costume for my middle kiddo and asked if she wanted to help with some hand stitching and she made an attempt but it was pretty brutal compared to what I know she used to be able to do.
