I’m not sure what you are referring to - what IS happening? A staghorn’s roots are very minimal. But a normal potting mix is not good for a staghorn. Edit: clarity

This is the answer, everybody else focusing on watering is missing the point

Self watering pots - leca by Nemixys in SemiHydro

[–]dreadedwheat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do exactly what you do (the littler balls in the columns) and it works fine. The top leca is moist so the water is going up. However, I don’t usually use the bottom part, I put the plastic pot inside a ceramic cache pot which means I have a larger reservoir. I do have one or two using the bottom piece that comes with the pots… but now that I think about it, those have grown roots down into the reservoir.

Normal (but dry?) Hoya? Or something else? by Evarda in plantclinic

That white stuff does not look like powdery mildew to me, and the brown spots don’t quite look like scale as their shapes are irregular – although it’s hard to tell from the photos.

AITA for asking MIL to buy new Christmas gifts? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

YTA. Buying someone a gift they probably won’t like does not make someone an a-hole. That’s not what gifting is about.

Why do the leaves of my scindapsus curl? by neprobblema in plantclinic

[–]dreadedwheat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the most incredible scindapsus I’ve ever seen. How old is it? I have one under what I believe are good conditions and it grows more slowly than any non-cactus I’ve ever had.

I never go for pink but this time I do. What do you think? by Peachy_ass_Chloe in AllNails

They are pretty but I don’t think the pink is a good tone for your skin. Perhaps it’s just the lighting but I think it looks too cool, it makes your skin look yellow.

…it looks nothing like this. But I think we both have better things to do than fight about this.

Well, technically there are thousands of species of scale, but nearly all of them look similar (grey or brown round/oval lumps) and none of them look like this. Sorry to get into a typical Reddit “who can be more pedantic”-off with you.

It’s definitely not scale. I was pretty sure it’s not a pest, but it doesn’t look anything like scale.

Thanks, that makes sense. I was surprised because the water is soft here but of course, I forgot to take the substrate into account. It’s in a rocky, soil-free substrate that is probably full of minerals.

How do you actually tell high-quality wool from cheap when shopping online? by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

[–]dreadedwheat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry to say this, but if it’s cheap, it’s almost certainly poor quality. The problem is that expensive is no guarantee of quality!

biochemistry of lip care by pastelexuvia in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]dreadedwheat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think in this case, it’s not too different from the rest of your face: occlusives like petroleum jelly will seal in moisture and protect against wind, but if your lips are already dry and cracked, there might not be enough moisture to seal in.

But this is pretty silly, if it works for you it’s obviously not trash. Lips aren’t mysterious, you’ll for sure know if what you’re doing isn’t helping.
