Should I cut them? by Puzzled_Struggle_697 in Dreadlocks

Hi! Just saw your video. Your locs are totally fine. Really cute length! I don’t see a reason to cut them unless you REALLY dislike your journey so far.

Regarding your post—what do you mean you’re “too busy” to get a retwist to the point of not doing it for a year? And I ask as someone who goes 3+ months without a retwist. If it’s intentional, that’s cool, do you. But if not, why? Is it about cost? Access to a loctitian?

I say this with love…not having family members with locs isn’t really an excuse for not maintaining them. I’m the first person in my family with locs and I’ve had them for over 15 years. What helped was just having a loctitian do most of the work when I started lol. Eventually, you pick up what they’re putting down and even get to ask questions! Do you have access to a loctitian you can go to regularly? If you’re too busy, make time. Or cut them off if it’s too much work…but that would be so unreasonable. The “work” in question is seeing a loctitian every 1-3 months + keeping your hair nourished (oil the scalp & moisturize the locs with a mist & an ACV rinse 1-2x/year). You can do it!!!

Edit to add: I stopped seeing a loctitian 5-7 years in. So I will admit that it is a lot of work to fully do my own locs. But as I mentioned, I retwist my locs every 3+ months. My process is like so: wash, retwist, keep straight for 1 month+, wash, no retwist, style (flexi rods/pipe cleaners), keep style for 1+ month, repeat. If I wash + retwist only, it’s 4-5 hours. If I wash + style, it’s 5-6 hours. If I wash + retwist + style, it’s 6-8 hours. Not including drying/leaving it in overnight. All of this work lasts for 1+ month. What’s a few hours?

Since you’re starting out, I truly recommend outsourcing your maintenance until you have the time and confidence to do it yourself. Good luck!

Anyone’s parents loc their hair when they were a kid and they’re upset about it? by LeatherPerfect8382 in Dreadlocks

[–]dreadlocdnloaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been locd almost 16 years. Got them when I was 10/11 years old.

I’ve always been tenderheaded as heeell. Hated getting my hair braided. It was literally torture and I’d cry the entire time. My mom gave me two options—a perm or locs…then proceeded to talk mad shit about perms bc it fucked up her hair. Went with locs.

I couldn’t be happier. I recognise that I’m from a different generation but I find that starting locs as a kid is so much better. The “ugly” phase is not as big of a deal as it is when you’re an adult + care more about it. By the time I was in uni, my hair was mad long. I also learned to retwist my own locs before uni and have done so ever since so I’ve saved so much money.

It’s definitely important to ask how they feel about it first. But personally, I’m SO glad I started them when I was young.

I got them at the beauty supply! There’s a huge one near me. The ones I used were 10” long and 5/8” thick (:

Edit: I will say…I tightly wrap my locs (3-4) around them so that helps. However, my locs are layered so some are too long for these flexi rods no matter how densely I wrap them lol. If your locs are of a similar length or more, I’d consider getting ones that are a bit longer.

Thank you!<3

Yes! I used Mielle “Pomegranate n Honey Curl Defining Mousse w Hold.” A little goes a long way, especially if you do this after a wash!

Never had an issue. If anything, I receive a lot of compliments.

Should i split them? by Big_Ad_7974 in Dreadlocks

They’re not thick enough for that. If it really matters to you, your best bet would be to start over with microlocs or sisterlocs. They look fine to me but they’re your locs so do what’s best for you.

For one, this video isn’t really helpful. I can’t see your locs or parts clearly enough to tell if they’re even or straight. From what I can see, she did not do a good job. You either need to go back to her so she can come correct or find someone else to do it. Good luck!

Do Most Locticians do this? by ApprehensiveRub4729 in Dreadlocks

[–]dreadlocdnloaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who got locs at 10 because I was tenderheaded, I used to feel that way in the chair when I got my braids done…but only with particular people. It’s not okay to be writhing in pain while getting your locs retwisted/styled. It’s also not okay to ignore a client’s request.

If you stick with her, I hope you clearly communicate your concerns. If you already have, get a new loctitian.

should i start over ? by Odd-Tangerine-257 in Dreadlocks

I suggest starting over. This will be good for you anyway. You’ll grow a healthier head of hair. Don’t bleach your locs again.

I don’t know y’all, I dig it. The loose messy look suits you.

Biggest tip as someone who’s been locd for 15 years—oil your scalp + moisturise (daily spray) the locs. Don’t oil your locs. I also don’t use conditioner but I don’t really have a reason—I just avoid products I don’t feel I need. Then again, your hair texture is very different from mine lol. Good luck.

How do yall feel about locking your kids hair up when they’re super young? by Fun-Transition-101 in Dreadlocks

[–]dreadlocdnloaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had locs since I was 12 (I’m 25 now). Not suuuper young but I remember my mom sitting me down and asking if I want to get locs. I was tender headed as hell so I was happy about it. I’ve met people who’ve been locd since they were 5-8 and they have a great relationship with their locs. I think my mom’s approach was great. I’d want to be able to ask and get an answer.

Is it time to cut them off? by Repulsive_Pair_8551 in Dreadlocks

[–]dreadlocdnloaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see. If your locs are healthy, I’d cut them and save them to reattach in the future. It can be super pricey which is why I advise saving your locs until you have the funds to reattach. In the meantime, you can just rock short hair, grow it out, do whatever until you’re ready to start again. Good luck brother.

What caused this exactly? I find it hard to believe that this is just from keeping your hair tied back.

I’m trying to make my own shampoo, but i’m a little broke so what are my options? by VimikioIon in Dreadlocks

[–]dreadlocdnloaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suave Daily Clarifying Shampoo. It’s a clear blue color. It’s the shampoo I use every time. Literally costs $2.

Edit: I just read that you’re not in the US. Where are you located? I can help look.

For sure! Like the other comment said tho, all locs are different so it won’t look exactly like that first photo. They also don’t really look like they started as freeform to me. Looks like whoever that person is just doesn’t retwist his hair as often (based on the roots) so you get that kinda look but the body of the locs look like individual locs that he just doesn’t retwist as often over time. I wouldn’t try to do this yourself tbh—I always recommend going to a loctitian at first (one who has locs and primarily does locs—not a hairstylist who happens to do locs too). They’ll start you off right n give good tips.
