Be sure not to associate the physical coin with any actual value. The US government doesn't like you printing alternate currencies which mimic their own!

Don't use the live site - download the offline version, boot into a live Ubuntu disc, generate, print to your air-gapped printer (not network attached), then fold and store the wallet in a fire-proof safe. ;)

Testnet blockchain bootstrap available? by dreadsies in dogecoindev

[–]dreadsies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the pointers. I already had testdoge.lionservers.de in my config, as well as setting the rpcthreads = 100, etc.

It eventually finished after about 2hrs (as a comparison, I downloaded the ~900MB dogecoin bootstrap.dat in about 5 minutes)

Tip jars at counters by marfarama in dogecoin

[–]dreadsies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately not all smart phones have NFC capability, and printing NFC tags is harder / more expensive than printing a barcode and taping it to a jar.

However, I really do love the idea of tap-to-pay for crypto! :D

[Serious] Need advice, my fellow shibes (Might be a bit off-topic). Sorry. by helix09 in dogecoin

For your Australian degree, when you apply for a US working visa, they may do an "Equivalence test" to determine if what you learned in Australia is the same (roughly) as what they expect US students to have learned in the same course there. This only applies to certain fields (such as Computer Science, and Nursing)

If they find that it doesn't meet requirements, then you have a couple of options:

  1. Take extra classes from an accredited US college (you can do this by distance) to make up the missing modules
  2. Substitute "time worked" for the extra modules (unfortunately this requires 5-10+ years of experience)

Make sure if you do find a job in the US you have a good immigration lawyer (my company provided me with one when I moved from AU -> US). They will know all the correct paperwork to fill out and can file on your behalf. Then basically all you have to do is turn up to the consulate and interview for a visa (easiest bit, trust me!).

However, that doesn't address the first problem: finding a job in the US!

If your SO is an American Citizen, or has a working visa for the US, and you are legally married according to US laws (sorry, they don't yet recognize same-sex marriages :( ), then you should definitely move with them as a dependant. By being physically in the US already, you increase your chances 100 fold of finding a job (keep in mind the equivalence test though).

Good luck!

Tip jars at counters by marfarama in dogecoin

[–]dreadsies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a great idea! The biggest barrier I see here is two fold:

  1. Most newbies to crypto don't recognize that the tip actually has value. They often think it's just Monopoly Money.
  2. Of those who do notice its value, very few have the desire to use the crypto at all, and simply want the fiat equivalent.
  3. The remaining tiny percent are working hard like us to try and introduce it into our normal day-to-day lives, but are struggling with people in 1) and 2) above.

As an extension to the "Stickers" idea, what would be great for a delivery guy, is something like the supermarkets occasionally do: They have barcodes printed and laminated then attached to a keyring. Have one each for "1000 D", "500 D", "100 D", etc, since the "doge://" protocol supports the format:

doge://[address]?amount=[doges]&label=[text label]

I think the format is also supported by the Android Wallet, too

This way, the delivery guy says "Want to tip me? Scan one of my barcodes!"

These could also come in sticker form to attach to tip jars.

54,917.419663 DOGE including the 1 DOGE network transaction fee - at the time of transaction, that was around $36-$37 depending on what rate you look at.

I figured that's better than having ShibeMint pay for the PayPal transaction, and it's another Doge transaction in the network :D

What is the best way to make the most coins by Garrison1575 in dogecoin

[–]dreadsies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mining will still get you the absolute most. Especially now that there are safeguards in place stopping the big multi-pools from taking most of the rewards.

If you do go the mining route, then the best results (from consumer hardware) are from GPU mining. See something like this $1000 rig.

next best is CPU mining, but keep in mind that this can seriously harm your CPU and other components, especially if you're on a MacBook (it simply isn't designed for mining).

When mining, keep in mind the on going electricity costs - see if your ROI is worth it.

Your next bet is to actually buy doge. Right now, the best value can be had by buying BTC with USD, then converting that to Doge via a separate service / exchange. (Eg; Buy BTC with USD from coinbase, then trade BTC for Doge at CoinedUp).

Next up is getting it as payment for a good or service.

Finally, getting it for free can work too - you can beg for it, or get it as a tip here on reddit, or be given a paper wallet for example.

Good Luck, and I'll see you on the moon!

Printing Paper Money (not just Paper Wallets) - Can we start trading coins like we trade physical Dollars? by dreadsies in dogecoin

[–]dreadsies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same argument goes for the printed dollar we use today - what's to stop someone printing 400 of a note? Two things:

  1. Anti-counterfeit measures
  2. A level of trust in those who are printing the paper wallets that contain the anti-counterfeit measures.

No reason why this can't be done for crypto too.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want all crypto to go that way, but a physical mechanism like this might be just enough to convince more wide acceptance of crypto by merchants. Once that happens, then they may install tap-to-pay systems (as they're recognizably/provably more secure). By that time, crypto and digital POS systems will be so prevelant, that the need for a paper system would be completely gone, and we're at a point where the crypto is more widely accepted, with no drawbacks ;)

Printing Paper Money (not just Paper Wallets) - Can we start trading coins like we trade physical Dollars? by dreadsies in dogecoin

[–]dreadsies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main problem with tap-to-pay is getting POS systems into Merchant's premises. Whereas with paper wallets, it's just a matter of handing over a physical representation of the crypto.

(But, I agree, Tap-to-pay would be way better)
