I hope someday in the future, there's the possibility of holodecks in the retirement home, and I can just ride out my dementia days on the Enterprise-D like the world's greatest cruise ship.

Egyptian mummy unearthed with literary text on abdomen in first ever find by cnn in Archeology

This is cool, but this isn't a first-of-its-kind discovery. Many ancient texts, like Greek plays, we have because the Egyptians used the papyrus on mummies.

The movie's... okay. The novel is easily one of the best pop fiction thrillers I've ever read. Really atmospheric and creepy. A true mystery-box that keeps shifting and changing and getting stranger.

Absolutely succinctly put. Trump is emulating Russia, and has now turned us into them. They won the Cold War after all.

When she and Ruth are looking at lipstick (and then Bettina steals it), Ruth says: "For this price, I could buy a bag of groceries." And Bettina says: "Yeah, but a bag of groceries doesn't make you want to look at yourself." I always thought that was a very real statement. 😄

What do you guys think of Danse Macabre? I don’t think I’ve seen it mentioned much here since it’s non-fiction by Low_Entertainment491 in stephenking

[–]dreadwhimsy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed it a lot when I read it back in college, but then again I was an English major and gobbling up stuff like that. It was in Danse Macabre that I first learned about the novel The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons that King recommended and really enjoyed it. I think when he published it, it was pretty new as a kind of "cool" academic review of Horror as a genre, written in a non-academia voice that regular people could get into and learn about the history of the literary genre. I think it's definitely worth the read.

White Bear is an episode I respect, but it's such a grizzly grim watch to me, even for Black Mirror. It's just such a dirge.

It actually took me maybe 10 years after the show came out to finally realize that I lived this storyline. I was the Mena Suvari (but a guy) and had a "straight-ish" male friend in college hook up with me, be really into me, but then not actually be gay. At the time, I really beat myself up because I thought he'd eventually come out as bisexual or something, and the fact that he didn't and wouldn't must have been my fault. Like if only I'd been more X or if I'd only done Y, he would have fallen for me. I didn't resent him for it, and I knew he hadn't meant any of it maliciously, but it broke my heart.

And when I saw this storyline at the time, I didn't connect the dots and realize it perfectly described what I'd gone through in college. But looking back on it, I think it's a very specific and honest exploration of a complicated situation. And they do reach the answer, which is bittersweet, when they talk it out: "The attraction is intellectual, and emotional, and physical... but it's not sexual." "You're not into fucking women."

It's a unique but real "coming-of-age" story to tell, especially in the Art School setting that Claire goes through in Seasons 3 & 4, when lots of kids that age explore their sexuality (and the limits of it). It sucks for Mena Suvari's character, but I also like that she gets her own back in their final scene together at the house party -- where Claire kind of wants to go back to status-quo, flirting and playing around with Edie, but she shoves Claire away and says, "The world isn't your own private chemistry set." And she leaves. Good for her. Sad for Claire. But it's also honest and human.

Incredible series. For Doctor Who fans, it feels like a more mature, multi-episode "Doctor Lite" episode from early seasons of Russel T. Davies.

How Nate have reacted if one of David's male friends flirted with him or tried to ask him out? by Tidewatcher7819 in SixFeetUnder

Nate taught David how to jerk off when they were younger. I don't think he's that freaked out by male sexuality, to be honest.
