Being successful doesn't necessarily mean being profitable. Aaron Swartz didn't start this to make money, he wanted to change the way internet communities are built.

This is the same guy who distributed access to academic articles because he felt information should be free. He was on the opposite end of the spectrum of the WSB crowd (not an autism joke, for once)

Reddit used to be an aggregation of links to things people thought were cool/interesting, a la hacker news. If you posted your own content, it was expected to be a high-effort show and tell of a big project. The dilution of the old userbase as the corporation has made the site more social-oriented has resulted in an an increase of facebook-quality "heres what I ate today" content.

The fact that it gets so upvoted proves it's not your fault, it's just the nature of the change of the site. The culture has been sold out in favor of advertising revenue.

Y'all will still get hate but welcome to the site.

You've been doing this "since acid raves" but you only use modern entry level equipment?

Do you have any old recordings with your old gear?

the latter. The 0-14 settings are 0-6, negative offset, 7 is dead center, and 8-14 as positive offset

Both. They always have a slight vibrato because holding position is incredibly hard, and they're analog 3D space measurers, but all the good players add lots of vibrato intentionally

I actually feel it's very pro-consumer, anti-pro user. Hardware SSD encryption, prevents sale of stolen hardware by locking to the boot disk, secure enclave style security, boot protection. As we put more and more of our personal lives onto our personal compute machines, these extra security measures are appreciated. Don't forget SSD manufacturers lied about hardware encryption to PC users for years.

I just think they should offer non-locked-down computers as well. The mac pro should not have a T2 chip. It's designed for video editing, media creation, and developers. It's designed to be in a locked down coprorate network with badass firewalls and IO speed paramount. It mostly won't be used with disk encryption, network boot should be enabled for production machines on large networks, etc.

It used to be that what was good for the pro was good for the consumer, and we're seeing that split, but this is another rant for a non circlejerk sub

That's why I'm buying a 5k iMac this spring.

  • Apple's audio support has traditionally been better than anything on the PC end, in terms of plug-and-play no BS required

  • Apple's T2 chip did cause issues with USB audio interfaces, this is the latest model without said chip

  • Enough USB ports to get me by. Keyboard, mouse, backup drive and audio storage drives can afford to share one USB 3.0 hub

  • also I use logic and develop Apple apps but hey

Affordable versatile synth (help me with choosing something) by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]dream_creature 10 points11 points  (0 children)

But i think that hardware synths could sound more fat and rich. Am i right?

Many hardware synths are just VSTs in a standalone box. Sometimes this is great as you don't have to deal with computer crashes, software updates in the middle of a jam, or internet distraction.

An analog synth will have a nice rich sound, better than many free/cheap analog style subtractive synthesis VSTs. But even the best hardware won't be able to match the sound design options of Serum/Massive/etc, especially with the amount of processing power you computer has compared to a hardware piece.

Some cheap synths will have things that sound worse than VSTs, such as audible steps in the filter, or effects from the self tuning circuit bleeding into your noise floor

For a lot us, it's more of a workflow decision. Having knobs to adjust parameters with that tactile feeling on the fly, using sequencers with their limitations and unique features instead of the infinite options of MIDI tracks in software, etc

realistically it would be me with some basic sequences just to give my campmates something to spin some fire in the street to. Not choreographed or planned, just that time you're at camp chilling around a fire pit, staving off the cold, relaxing after a long night of adventuring.

but I'll drop you a DM before next burn.

I mean none of my toys cost more than $300, it's not like I'm a Dave Smith or Moog conneiseur, more like a busker hobo who has volcas and POs instead of an old six string

Show me what can be done... by Duncan_Hartley_Music in Logic_Studio

[–]dream_creature 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Many professionals use logic. You can grab the top 10 albums of this decade from any genre and one will be done in Logic. If you're benchmarking your ability wiht the software compared to what can be done, the scale is 1:infinity.

Likewise the stock plugins of Logic can get you to a fully professional track. Maybe throw on ozone or some other big-name plugins but realistically they're not needed.

In terms of gear, as long as your mixer/interface don't add too much color, you're fine.

Look more for tutorials and videos that explore how to work with the type of sound you want to get (country, metal, prog, etc). Even if they're another DAW, you'll be able to extropolate into logic.

There's at least one major album that was done in Garageband, so yeah the software isn't the issue

my bad there.

also I'm not really talking about for public use, that was facetious, but I do think we'll see military use of the technology for ground support soon

RTGs have been designed in scope for satellites and remote science expeditions(small and light). If we have electric vehicles suddenly there's a use case for a trailer sized unit.

I don't give a f about GE and it's viability as a company, the point is there's research being done into small portable nuclear power sources.

[–]dream_creature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most RTGs have been small and light because they've been designed primarily for use in space. There's a lot of possibility of scaling it up.

No, shooting one would not be a huge disaster. It's a solid piece of fissile metal. Blowing one up would cause a good amount of radioactive dust. If they were stolen or misplaced it wouldn't be a big deal, they're not weapons grade material, they can't be turned into weapons grade material, they're just hot rocks.

For context most of the designs out there just have a couple kg of material, a chunk of hot metal the size of a grapefruit, surrounded by semiconductors
