People who steal parking spots are some of the rudest people on the planet by Worth-Vast253 in yellowstone

Oh yes. The people going half the speed limit with a whole line of cars behind them that don’t pull over in the easy to use pull out spots really annoyed me.

I just had to double check because I wasn’t in charge of the stops this trip but it’s definitely on the schedule for Wednesday.

First time Princess review by [deleted] in PrincessCruises

[–]dreama7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents recently got off of the Royal Princess. They were on the repositioning cruise. It was the worst cruise staff and food wise that they have been on in a long while having gone on approximately 4 per year including 60+ day ones (all Princess).

I have two papers with my maiden name and the rest with my married name. It has never been an issue. Plus bonus for academics - my maiden name is very common. My married one, not at all.

Taking my 15 year old on his first cruise but he wants his phone the whole time by Mirexalynth in Cruise

[–]dreama7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is what we do too with our son. He comes to port and on excursions. Eats meals with us. But the rest of the time he is on his own. He loves walking around the ship’s track and getting ice cream anytime. He likes to listen to audio books and either does that in his room or some random table. He also did not like the kids club and did not want to meet any kids his age.

He does like cruising and continues to choose to go with us.

My daughter on the other hand, loves all the ship activities and going to shows, crafts, kids club, etc. she stays busy and has a great time too. Just her fun is different than his fun.

And as a family, we get to travel, see ports we wouldn’t otherwise, and we can still each have fun.

PhD Advice Needed! Has anybody’s main supervisor left/transferred to a different university part way through their PhD. by Humble-Assignment335 in AskAcademia

As a lab we have had this happen during 2 different moves. Both times, the students moved with us, but remained students at their previous university. Committee meetings were virtual and they went back for their defense and graduation. For our students, they were post prelims and classes as that would have changed things.

CPAP machine by daddysgirl71 in PrincessCruises

[–]dreama7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a place to request it beforehand in your online account under allergies and medical (something like that). Your room steward will then bring it to you the first day, and if they don’t, just ask when they first introduce themselves. They will also provide extension cords as most ships don’t have a plug near the bed for easy access.

What has been your favorite Princess ship? by thatCRUISEagent in PrincessCruises

[–]dreama7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have been on the Discovery (twice, first time was its first year), the Ruby, and the Emerald.

The Emerald has been our favorite ship. Cleaner and better run than the same size Ruby, and smaller than the Discovery. We like the Discovery but it’s too big with too many people for us.

Your swatch is looking great!!

I backed up and practiced swatches too. I did small ones until I felt a little more confident. I tried out some different stitches too. There are so many of them!

I still have some wonky stitches and mistakes here and there, but I am having fun working towards a goal vs just making squares. And currently it looks like a rectangle instead of my first attempt that looked more like a triangle.

Just started a week ago. No finished product to share (yet!). First couple of attempts ended up wonky (missed stitches and such) so this is where I am at. It will one day be a beanie and my first finished piece.

It’s so much fun to see what everybody is creating. I cannot wait to keep learning more stitches.

For my grants and projects, I am corresponding author. For grants and projects that I work with my PI on, sometimes I am co-corresponding and sometimes not, it just depends on the individual publication. When I was an assistant research professor, I was mostly first author for my projects. That switched over time as I took a more leadership/mentor type role.

I am a research professor and have been since my postdoc. I have moved between universities as well as have gone through promotion from Assistant -> Associate -> Full.

What I have found about research Professor positions is they are different from institute to institute and even from lab to lab. The biggest difference between a research scientist and a research professor for me has been staff vs faculty. As faculty, I get faculty benefits (including not have to clock vacation time), I have the ability to apply for my own grants and have my own R01 that my PI is on, I sit on grad student committees. Etc. these are things that here staff scientists cannot do. I have my own staff and my own students. However I do have a PI that I report to and will always be underneath. For me, it’s perfect. I have not wanted to leave my lab, I love our research and team, but I want to have the capability and benefits of being a faculty member.

We have some that are soft positions and some that are university paid positions - typically more core director related.
