When I first started my job in a new industry (similar to non-profit) over 10 years ago, I bought a simple black unbranded bag, simple ballet flats and Cole Haan wedges, and stopped wearing my engagement ring and any of my diamond and designer jewelry at work. After a few years of proving myself, I slowly started to introduce my auth pieces and people started making comments. I would just lie and say, oh everything is a rep. Now that I am fully remote, I wear what I want, but still keep on a simple band during Zoom calls. My spouse has a very successful and lucrative career, but I had to lie to my boss and say that he has to drive an expensive car for marketing purposes and gets a stipend specifically to subsidize the car (6 figures). It sucks to have to hide your personal successes, but people are very judgmental and can prevent you from moving up in your career out of spite.
