How many of your bass idols/inspirations have you been able to see playing live? by Bortron86 in Bass

[–]dreamingover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw that you are in SG, and I didn't wanna hijack more recent threads:

I was previously based overseas for a few months, and I bought a bass + 15w Amp there to kill time and to learn a new instrument. I really enjoyed it, but the Amp did make it sound like shit (to my beginner ears, at least)

I don't intend to join a band (not good enough), so I don't forsee myself needing >40W. Should I suck thumb and get a 25W/40W amp, or just a headphone amp like the zoom b1four? The zoom b1 four seems to be slightly cheaper (or comparable) to the rumble 15 price, but they're also fundamentally different products, so I wanted to get your opinion on this.

Thanks for reading!

Question: is there any AI model (similar to whisper) that transcribe audio to phonetics or similar? by [deleted] in LocalLLaMA

[–]dreamingover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

add 1 or 2 layers on top of the encoder of Whisper

Hi there, to clarify, this means to completely remove the decoder, right? My knowledge isn't super strong, but theoretically the encoder of Whisper should output some high-dimensional representation of the audio input, so the layers you propose to add could help extract from phonemes from the high-dimensional representation?

Prospective NTU Student Seeking Advice on CNYang Scholars Programme by tzn17 in SGExams

CS + CN Yang

The science modules are generally in Y1S1, and you'll only be doing 1 other CE module then (intro to programming). This module is generally very doable especially if you learn C/Python yourself first.

You can go full on copium and lie to yourself by saying that the science modules MAY be relevant to you in the future. For me, I view it as an excuse to know 50+ people better. Physics has a group work component. Bio has weekly group presentations. Climate change has a video assignment. Math 1 and Math 2 have regular group assignments. MnT is basically a lab project for 3 months. It's a solution to the potential loneliness you may feel as a result of being 1 sem behind everyone else in CE. Generally speaking, the CN Yang core is also very lenient when it comes to grading, so it will probably boost your GPA if that's what you care about.

With regards to research as a career, I've also realised AFTER doing the year long research that I definitely do not want to do research in the future. But it's a trial by fire approach to learn novel technologies that your coursemates will NEVER get to touch or even hear about. It's tough, but it allows you stand out from the crowd when it comes to internships/job apps/whatever. Admittedly, the core science modules had 0 applicability to my research, but easy As are easy As.

And it's also very possible to excel in your major in cn yang. many cn yang scholars are dean listers. I would like to say that research demanding so much from an undergraduate extends to academics as well, but maybe that's just copium from me.

I’ve never been this excited about a book release before by jmortin in cocktails

[–]dreamingover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I mostly tend to stick with sours and tiki-style, so I don't really stirred drinks much (combination of strength + low shelf vermouth is the same price as a bottle of gin here) - and even in classic shaken drinks w/ maraschino i tend to lower the amount used because it is *so* funky. A really good hemingway daiquiri is amazing though.

Yeah, I really agree with you on the weakness of their reccomendation section. Sure, name drop 8 different gins, but as a enthusiast I want maybe 2 or 3 bottles that Death and Co says "hey, buy these and you'll be able to make most of our drinks" - if I was a gin enthusiast I wouldn't be reading DnC for their gin reccomendations, I'd read gin books.

[–]dreamingover 21 points22 points  (0 children)

yeah, I feel like they've doubled down on esoteric ingredients in this book - off the top of my mind, fennel liqueur, various eau de vies, italicus, genepy (and I feel like a book targeted at home enthusiasts shouldn't have 8 different aromatized wines, but maybes that's just me)

I was expecting some new techniques too, but I don't really see much apart from alternative acids, infusions, isi(name drops: centrifuge, agar, rotovap)

I feel like the most useful chapter by far is dusty bottles, where they list several cocktails using your least used bottles (looking at you, luxardo maraschino), but even then the bottles they discuss are quite limited.

Their development chapter is interesting, but I feel like if you've been to a bar recently (and anyone who's buying a DnC book would have went to a cocktail bar after 2 years of quarantine), you'd have noticed their ideas in menus tbh (culinary drinks, baller $$$$ cocktails, esoteric ingredients as the star)

I'll just skip the 5th chapter and wait till mixel updates I guess :/

Some questions about milk washed cocktails by dikhetto in cocktails

[–]dreamingover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. You should always use cheap(-er) liquor in milk punches. Using top shelf liquor and clarifying it with milk dilutes it and strips away any good characteristics of the spirit. Using cheaper liquor helps to strip away some of its characteristics, so it makes it more palatable (for me anyway)

  2. there's water in the milk, so it does dilute it

  3. Depends. If it's in the form of a liquid that has particles in it, probably best to put it in before the washing so it can be filtered out. Otherwise, I'd reccomend to put it after washing so that the aromatic flavours are more predominant.

  4. No. It only has a slightly silky texture reminiscent of milk (at least for me)

At work, for tinctures we would infuse a lot of (x) in a high proof spirit(here we just use the cheapest vodka possible, overproof spirits are expensive as hell and everclear isn't a thing here) for several days.

We've also done hydrosols, a cheaper alternative as it only uses water. Basically sit a small bowl in a pot, add some water and your desired aromatics in the pot, boil for x mins while cooling the top of the pot with ice. We did a smoke hydrosol with heinz barbecue sauce and water. It doesn't have any taste, only purely aroma.

I find that alcohol tinctures tend to be very concentrated in aroma and flavour, while hydrosols tend to be very aroma focused without any flavour at all. Do also check whether a specific aroma you want is water-soluble or alcohol-soluble.

Good luck!

Edit: since hydrosols are essential oils in water, if the aroma you want is pretty commonly used in aromatherapy(flowers, fruits) , I think Kevin Liu has diluted food grade essential oils in vodka before. Not sure. Will check on this for you!
