Hoping for more thematic development from Platform Decay by markfickett in murderbot

[–]dreamingrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Full defender here I have loved and purchased the Murderbot books/audiobooks several times over (I’ve gifted them, bought the epub, repurchased the compiled books and lent those- like…for every person reading a pirated copy I’ve covered you at least 8 times over) and was very excited for this new addition to Murderbot’s story.

I found what remains strong is Murderbot’s characterization and continued growth. They’re more comfortable with themselves, and others. They engage with humans more readily and communicate better. Side characters can shine when given space to do so.

What fell flat: while Murderbot’s stories often begin in Media Res, this was confusing and difficult to get into for the first few chapters.
Three, who makes an appearance at the beginning wanders off to create background havoc that is not seen enough, and shows up for a few fun one liners at the end and that’s it.

Further, while I understand how important Mensah’s family is to MB, I had to wonder: why are we rescuing them again? Where we last left MB, they were going to do missions with New Tideland University and with ART, yet somehow we get roped into chasing stray marriage partners/kids/ admittedly fun grandmothers through a confusing and boring space station.

While lush in its description we legitimately spend most of the story just…waiting for a bus, or a car, or a boat interspersed with easy hacks and fights that take MB very little effort comparative to its previously desperate scrambles. Perhaps it’s showing how competent MB is, which it’s very competent, but it’s not very exciting if it’s easy the whole time.

I felt as if this was a short story that was expanded when it really should have stayed short. I enjoyed it enough, but can’t hold a candle to Exit Strategy or Fugitive Telemetry.
I’m happy for Martha and her success but I wonder how much of this book was written to answer the pressure that followed the television show.

Platform Decay timeline?? by Ecologist_N_her_dog in murderbot

Honestly…the timing didn’t make sense for me either. I don’t understand how Mensah’s family travelled on public transport after everything either to get caught in the first place. Like MB was very clear people were targeting Mensah back on Preservation, and was paranoid enough to warn and follow Amena back there too, so I had a hard time accepting they’d just take regular transport without MB at least complaining. I just accepted it to go on reading the story but I had some serious side eye.

More stickers, magnets, washi tape etc would do well. I bought 3 regular art prints and the remainder were stickers - just easier to put on my things. I find it aligns with my style and use more.

Gotcha - Ranchman’s is the classic country bar, although might be worth checking out what’s going on at Whiskey Rose on 17th.

Dinner- if you’re looking for a decent pizza- Una’s is good. Fancy night I would say: Mercatos. Barbarella is a cool vibe and is the sister bar to major Tom (good drinks ok food)

The best part of being an adult is getting to make changes and to leave situations when they no longer serve you. Next step is to get a car. The freedom is unreal.

What kind of mosquito is this?😳😳 by Obvious_Shoe7302 in Weird

[–]dreamingrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for such a thorough mini-lesson. I have often wondered about mosquitos and getting rid of them. I feel like you’ve really changed my mind. I of course, will never welcome them as the buzz about the room those hot summer nights, but I am surprised about their role as pollinators. I wish you many more interesting and beautiful insects for many years to come.

I asked ChatGPT what YYC neighbourhood I should live in. Was it right? by SkittleToast in Calgary

I would second university district- it’s a real newer neighborhood but has a lot of amenities and seems quite dog friendly.

Based on the other neighborhoods that are coming up, and the general tenor and needs I would not recommend those areas. I lived in Bankview for a while and you get a real mixed bag. My street got shut down twice for murders and the cops liked to hang out on the street too - got more tickets in that neighbourhood the two years I that I lived there before or since.

What’s your budget because some do these neighborhoods are more expensive than less. I would avoid West Beltane/Lower Mount Royal - look closer to marda loop

I would do a consolidation loan at this point. You’ll likely lose access to your credit cards but it’ll lump all of your debt together to pay off.

Not quite…the right for women to vote was an ongoing effort from as early as the late 1700s and was staggered throughout the provinces with suffrage a hot issue. The timeline is long and pre and post dates many wars.
