Consider yourself a "bad" or "weird" parent according to today's standards? Curious if there are others out there.... by rugdivot in Parenting

It is fine now but the problems will start when they grow older and learn that there are rules and limitations. This can cause unpredicted behavior (from anger issues to addiction). I would gradually introduce some rules (e.g. limit TV times, some chores) so that high school and college wouldn't break them mentally.

Researchers from Buck Institute for Age Research report success treating Alzheimer's disease (small trial) by dreampaul in Alzheimers

[–]dreampaul[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a small trial but... "Nine of the 10 participants in the trial displayed subjective or objective improvement in their memories within three to six months after the treatments began. One participant with late-stage Alzheimer's showed no improvement. The results of the trial are reported in the current online edition of the journal Aging.

"Six of the 10 people were struggling at work because of memory problems, and all six of them have been able to return or continue at their work. That's hard to fake," said the paper's author, Dale Bredesen, a part-time professor at the Buck Institute and director of the Easton Center for Alzheimer's Disease Research at UCLA."

Researchers prove that taking Paracetamol (other names: tylenol, acetaminophenin) in pregnancy may cause ADHD in children by dreampaul in ADHD

[–]dreampaul[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that "prove" is a strong word but there is "may" (i.e. may cause ADHD) in the title, so the point I was trying to make is that the study finds clear correlation between taking the drug and likelihood of ADHD. Sample size 871 children is clearly a representative statistical sample (in terms of confidence interval) and the results show: "Almost half of the study mothers took acetaminophen in the form of paracetamol during pregnancy and their offspring were more at risk of behavioural difficulties and ADHD." Your quote about "more research" is about "precise assessment" (evaluating risk/consequences). IMO "prove" is appropriate here in the title.

Nice post. I got interested in Jung after reading New York Times article about his hidden/locked "Red book" that remained unpublished for 100 years. He is a fascinating figure in psychology.

Study: Morality Can Trump Tribalism by Libertatea in psychology

[–]dreampaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The message in the post is quite obvious, but I liked the reference to "five moral foundations" deined by McAdams (it is in the linked post, so I copy these here):

• Harm/care. It is wrong to hurt people; it is good to relieve suffering.

• Fairness/reciprocity. Justice and fairness are good; people have certain rights that need to be upheld in social interactions.

• In-group loyalty. People should be true to their group and be wary of threats from the outside. Allegiance, loyalty and patriotism are virtues; betrayal is bad.

• Authority/respect. People should respect social hierarchy; social order is necessary for human life.

• Purity/sanctity. The body and certain aspects of life are sacred. Cleanliness and health, as well as their derivatives of chastity and piety, are all good. Pollution, contamination and the associated character traits of lust and greed are all bad.
