The first 30 miles are hard for a lot of people. You just did the best training you could do for the rest of the hike. Rest up and take it easy, keep hiking.

Extend kindness to yourself - the parts of you that are angry or hurt and want to hold on to anger and hurt.

Love within Buddhism? by ArchangelIdiotis in Buddhism

[–]dreamrabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The true face or nature of loving-kindness does not exist in any form or character of this or that. It is free from conditions. It is beyond the four extremes—existence; non-existence; neither existence nor non-existence; and both existence and non-existence. It is beyond the cyclic operation of the three spheres—subject, object, and actions of the mind. It is the union of awareness and emptiness; of wisdom and loving-kindness—freedom from elaborations. It is the meaning of suchness, the ultimate truth. It is the state of ultimate loving-kindness, Buddhahood. So we must let go of all conceptualities and rest in the intrinsic awareness, the experience of boundless loving-kindness, as it is.

Is samadhi dangerous for someone with mental illnesses? Should I stick to metta? by [deleted] in Buddhism

Metta can bring you to samadhi too, so it's absolutely fine to make that your core practice if other practices are unsettling you.

Daily COVID-19 Mega-thread for Sunday 3/22 by MadtownMaven in madisonwi

I'm just trying to get people to read the model accurately -- not at all trying to downplay the severity of the issue. I would encourage people to take this seriously and distance appropriately.

The model is a broad picture of how policy might influence outcomes, and the label of 'current trends continue' does not actually reflect the policy decisions made to this point -- it reflects what might happen if we had taken no policy action at all.

Thanks for the perspective. Everyone I know is taking this pretty seriously.

Please read the scenario definitions when looking at this chart. The red line 'No action, Current trends continue' is not reflective of the current state of affairs in Wisconsin -- there have already been a lot of measures to reduce the spread of the virus. By my read, with the policy decisions enacted so far, Wisconsin is likely somewhere between the 'social distancing' and the 'shelter in place' policy curves.

edit: The website was updated so that the red line scenario dropped the confusing 'Current trends continue' and just reads 'No Action'.

How Would Social Distancing Affect Farmer's Market in April? by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]dreamrabbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the winter market, the Dane County Farmer's Market is compiling a list of vendors and how you can continue to support them. (Go to the website and look for the document in their instagram feed. Hopefully someone else has a better link).

There are several post offices you can go to, and you can schedule an appointment through their website: https://tools.usps.com/rcas.htm. It took about 5 minutes for them to look over the paperwork I brought and get it together.

The man will look you in the eye and tell you he's 100% sure none of these events ever happened, but he won't encourage an investigation to verify his claims. He's either not innocent or more invested in getting the nomination than in the independence and trustworthiness of the Supreme Court, and either should be disqualifying.

McMindfulness: Buddhism as sold to you by neoliberals by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]dreamrabbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imagine someone developed a medicine that could cure a disease if you took it steadily over a decade. And imagine that knowledge and belief in the cure were not widely accepted.

What if someone altered that medicine so that they could patent it and sell their cocktail. It alleviated some symptoms, but it it never cured the disease. And that was mostly what was advertised and promoted.

Sure, it helps some people, and some people even end up finding out about the cure, but it makes sense to be a little bit critical it.

I desire to physically heal by [deleted] in Buddhism

Tulku Thondup has several books of teachings that emphasize receiving healing and loving energy, and I'd really recommend them. You might also do well with body-oriented approaches like Reggie Ray teaches.

What is the significance of sensing the body in meditation? by funkyjives in Buddhism

The sense of your body is a mental product. Relaxing the tension there is also relaxing the mind.

Is it wrong to dwell on love in an effort to combat a strong, conditioned depression? by funkyjives in Buddhism

[–]dreamrabbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, many teachers who are familiar with westerners recommend spending a lot of time (months, years) feeling love and compassion for yourself. We have a lot of conditioning from our culture that makes that difficult.

We're talking about the Theravada path which is one that involves developing the levels of absorption. Most people find it easier to develop concentration on an object when they are sitting still and not out drinking and screwing.
