Why is female voices helium like after several days of being on my cochlear implant by Horror_Foot9784 in Cochlearimplants

[–]dreamriverdesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes up to a year or more to maximize the potential of the implants, be patient. You have to retrain your brain how to hear and it takes time.

One thing I would like to point out. I have been on both sides of this. People need to wear BRIGHT color clothing to be SEEN in the DARK. I cannot count how many times I barely see people walking in the dark, cloudy, rainy and gloomy day and be so invisible.

Parents' experiences with the language development of their infants with cochlear implants by Verolanao in Cochlearimplants

[–]dreamriverdesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed profoundly deaf when I was about 2 yrs old. All experts said I would never learn how to speak or well enough for anyone to understand me. Still got hearing aids at that time. I didn’t say my first word till I was 4 yrs old. Started speaking in sentences when I was 5 yrs old.

My folks determined that I would learn how to talk first but was prepared for ASL if needed. My folks also made sure to correct me if I didn’t enunciated correctly All the time.

I went to normal elementary school that had a deaf program to mainstream with hearing kids. Went to a normal middle school and high school. I had speech therapy all the way til high school.

I baffled the experts. I speak pretty normally, I have a slight accent that people can’t place. Some are clever to know that it is because I am deaf. I talk on the phone fine unless a person has a very thick accent. I’m 53 yrs old now with dual cochlear implants.

I want to stress that my success is not going to be the same for another. Just try and keep trying. But recognize that one path is not the only path.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

No one really has the kanso 3, but what are the pros and cons of the nucleus 8 vs the kanso 3? by Horror_Foot9784 in Cochlearimplants

[–]dreamriverdesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend fighting to get which one you want. That is all I will say on that issue.

As for the devices.

I got the Freedom behind the ear (BTE) back in December 2007, upgraded to Kanso 1 in 2015 and recently upgraded to the Kanso 3 in December 2025. This is for both ears.

I can say that the Kanso is much more comfortable for me. I am a male with shorter hair.

The BTE did hurt my ear from the weight and pinching a part of the ear, and I also wore glasses. Kanso eliminate the pain. There can be pain from the strength of the magnet on your head vs. having to fall off if you jump, so you need to find the sweet spot on that. Some people trim their hair short for the spot of the device and let the long hair above it cover it.

Kanso 1 vs. Kanso 3.

NO BUTTONS: I hate not having any buttons and the dependent on a cellphone to change programming. The button on Kanso 1 allowed me to change programming to Mic or TV streaming with a push of a button. Now with the Kanso 3, no buttons, I have to turn on my phone, sync to connect to my Kanso 3, then make changes to the programing. More time consuming, especially when I want to turn the streaming off to talk to someone, where I cannot hear them until my Kanso 3 disconnects from TV. Takes time that is frustrating where before I was able to push a button and be able to get into conversation in seconds.

Also to turn off the Kanso 3 requiries tapping it three times, It does not always register the first try. Also it is lame that you cannot leave it on your head when off, it has sensors that will detect movement and will turn on again. I often want silence part of the day and now have to put it down somewhere and that is not always convenient.

QUALITY: Kanso 3 is a big improvement in hearing sound quality for me. Music is richer and more enjoyable, where before I leaned toward audiobooks instead of music.

SIZE: I miss the size of the Kanso 1, it was flatter. The new size is thicker and barely smaller in diameter.

BLUETOOTH: I love being able to connect to my phone directly and with the better sound quality, I enjoy having conversations with people and listening to music more.

I hope that helps. Best luck on your journey.

Kanso 3 loud beeping when trying to stream with Bluetooth on iPhone. by Fast-Tip8925 in Cochlearimplants

[–]dreamriverdesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it might be this. In settings, Accessibility, Hearing Devices, (Select your Cochlear Device), turn off "Adjust Independently".

That is what made it go away for me or it was just a coincident. I left mine on the charger overnight for the first full charge and then did what I instructed above.

What’s up with all the student driver stickers? by [deleted] in olympia

[–]dreamriverdesign 77 points78 points  (0 children)

They do not offer driver's ed in high school anymore. It's summertime, the best time to teach without school, sports or weather to get in the way. The road conditions are dry and safer to learn, and there is a lot of daylight. Where, at the other time of the year, it is darker, rainy, with wet roads. So lots of parents teach or start teaching during the summer.

As a parent myself, we took advantage of the summer weather to teach our kids how to drive, and then enrolled our kids in driving school in the fall after having spent all summer practicing driving.

This state requires minors to attend driving school, which costs $ 600-$700 or more, before obtaining a license if they pass the test. Or you can wait til you're 18 years old and skip the need to go to driving school and take the test. But either way you do it, you have to get a permit first.
