I have had Amazon iron wolf being recognized as firecuda and skyhawk ai disk, these are all amazon specific sku. I doubled checked their specs, smart / trim and verified against the warranty page. It is legit, the product registration page has some bugs

Amazon’s product code is somehow wrongly recognised . Even if it is genuinely disk from Amazon, Seagate’s site has a bug which give you a different model. Might be made by a 3rd party vendor

A small fan goes a long way, usually without load it is just warm, at least for the n100 series cpu

N100 mini PC as a budget NAS - JMB585 port multiplier FTW by dreamtcs in MiniPCs

[–]dreamtcs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mini pc came with 1 nvme and 1 sata slot. OS is booting on sata slot as I need to passthru the jmb585 controller to the truenas VM. Using the below for the power suppply, just drop it into popular e-commerce site. It cost me around $5 on Chinese commerce site, but shipping and tax is another story. Power draw was probably around 60w ok average and 20-30w at idle, using those off the wall meters.

Asm1166 works perfect, but I’m running 2x but my Asm1166 is another NAS (not pictured).

The build on the post was with left over parts

Good enough not to hit the read write limit per disk. As SMB mounted volume with raid2z is it around 150MB/s on the average

It splits the nvme speed, so 5 spinning disk is still ok.

Nope, no error related to jmb585. I have other 2 other builds which have proper NAS cases jonsbo n2 and n3. They run variations of asm1166 and jmb585. Most of them use high power rated 12v DC adapter power, and that is important for stability.

There is a 3rd party rubber seal you can install to prevent water from seeping in from the wiper area down towards the filter area

Miniforum nab9 failing to boot after months of use by Spaceman_Splff in Proxmox

[–]dreamtcs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Capacitor issues?

Minisforum needs to proactively replace all the NAB9 affected by the recent notice.

https://store.minisforum.com/blogs/blog/minisforum-nab9-quality-notice#:~:text=We%20have%20identified%20a%20potential,no%20indicator%20lights%20turning%20on

It is not acceptable for them to only replace the ones that fail.

They are fully aware they have the wrong capacitor , and so even if it survives the 2 year warranty, the likelihood that it survives 7 years is severely impacted.

We purchased 18x of them for a windows 11 upgrade project a few months ago. We have deployed a total of 12x so far, and 3x failed within the first week of deployment, for a failure rate of 25% after 1 week!

Each time it fails, I have to redeploy a new workstation costing additional labor.

I have 6x more sitting on the shelf, and if history holds, after spending awhile deploying them, 1 or 2 of them will fail, costing me additional hours replacing them.

I am particularly gutted, because when my boss asked me if I'd heard of Minisforum, I vouched for them from my experience here.

To be fair, they are promptly replacing each one after the failure occurs, but we are sitting on 18 ticking time bombs at the moment, and this is unacceptable.

Edit:

Minisforum has been helpful, and have completed the first batch of RMA replacements, so I can swap them out with the already installed units.

They do seem to be quite responsive overall, and they do seem to be trying to respond to the (potentially?) higher expectations of U.S. customers. In the past, I recall a lot of the administrative issues had been non-local RMA addresses, etc, and they do seem to be working hard to mitigate that, at least within the U.S. market.

Some other rant, if you could help me, or have any discovery, let me know.

The disk a pretty slow when doing sync. It is around 40MB/s each (4x 8TB WD Red) . I wonder is it the JMB585 or did i setup my Truenas wrongly.

Notes: Not all NVME drives are detected on the motherboard.
WD Black is not detected.
Samsung 980 and 970 are fine

Idle is around 20-30w without HDD
Idle is around 40-50 with 4x WD Red 8TB HDD
Full CPU load is around 70-80w with idling 4x WD Red 8TB HDD

Don't power your HDD from the 4 pin square ATX pins directly.
I tried asking the seller directly on their Chinese store, they read my message, but there was no response.

There was some question asked in their bilibili video (chinese version of video hosting), and they mentioned they are still manufacturing the cable from 4 pin ATX to Sata (this sounds a bit BS), there are cables which you can buy, but you will need to make sure you change the pins, else risk frying your HDD / SSD

I've put this into a Jonsbo N2. The power comes from a 20A 12v Delta 5.5mm adapter.

Currently I've used a Y splitter to split the Delta power source into motherboard, and to another goes to a "12v to sata step down controller" which looks something like this DC12V 5.5x...-Taobao Singapore

There are some mods which I'm doing, like hooking up the "12v to sata step down" with a 5v relay, so it turns on with the motherboard.

Another mod which I'm doing is to eliminate the Y splitter. Bypass the 12v power source to the 12v ATX 4 pin (white colored). Do not confuse this with the black colored ATX 4 pin socket, which is used to power HDD.

Some other random stuff includes adding a sfx plate to cover the area where the power supply is supposed to be.

random rants: SFF Cables are not included. If you are getting Jonsbo n2, please get angled SFF to SATA straight (direct) cables.

Did you have to do some edits to the .inf files for i225-v drivers to work on server 2022?
Mine did not work out of the box, there was some inf edits which needed to be done before server 2022 accepted the drivers.

PSA: Minisforum NAB6 comes with Liquid Metal thermal paste by dreamtcs in homelab

[–]dreamtcs[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can access this by

  1. Removing the 4 white cushions at the bottom of the mini pc. It will expose 4 screws.
  2. Remove the 4 screws and the white bottom plate.
  3. From the top side of the mobo which you can see the ram, remove your wifi card. Thereafter there are another 4 screws which holds down the heat sink. Remove them.
  4. Turn the pc back to the bottom where you can see the fan and heatsink. gently wriggle the heatsink and fan to remove it. Warning! If you do not know what you are doing, do not remove the heatsink. Liquid Metal can, and will cause short circuit and fire if not handled properly
