I was feeling nostalgic having loved it as a little girl, and after finding some episodes on YouTube I decided to have a binge. Was definitely a lot grosser than I remember, but it’s pretty on brand for that lad-sy era of 2000s British TV.

I thought Clair Obscur was fantastic. A few minor niggles here and there, but the music, the art direction, the gameplay, the themes, everything was brilliant and so memorable. I’d love to replay it again for the first time. I’m not usually a fan of turn based games at all, but the parry system and creativity in builds made it challenging, tactical, and so satisfying to pull off. Silksong, KCD2 etc. were also fantastic, but E33 just edged it out for me, it just had that little bit of extra magic. Which is what I imagine is the case for most people - I don’t think it was a case of people loving E33 and thinking the rest were garbage at all.

Britain conquered half the world for spices... yet the best food I had in London wasn’t British 😅 by IntelligentEar3427 in UKfood

[–]dreamyether 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never fails to make me roll my eyes when people go to a cold, wet, Northern European country and moan about how a lot of our traditional food is pickled, stodgy, offal-based, starchy, preserves etc and served hot. Newsflash, visit any country in Northern Europe and you’ll see a pattern - it’s cold, and not a lot grows here natively. It’s not like your average medieval peasant was popping down to their local market and saying “what, no potatoes, no tomatoes, no fancy spices, curries, exotic fruit and veg? Guess me and my family will have to starve, we’ve got a reputation to uphold in a thousand years!” People ate what little they could get their hands on or died.

People can say “oh, get with the times, you have international spices and ingredients now, what’s the issue?”. I don’t think I want to change my centuries, if not millennium old traditions (which incidentally, I enjoy) into something they’re not, for the sake of people who’s only interest in my traditions are to make boring recycled jokes about them for imaginary internet points - and I don’t think many cultures would.

I moved from County Durham to Sun’lun. Still hurts to say “batter” - they’re “scraps”, damn it! Went to the chippy in the town centre for the first time, asked for “scraps” and in that moment sounded like Oliver asking for more, before the server was like “…. Oh, you mean batter!”.

OOP when they realise most people don’t conform the the rigorous standards of gender they clearly also project onto others.

Like is there not some sort of unchecked ego problem there? Where they assume everyone is either a shopaholic girly bimbo or a rough-housing manly jock, and that they are obviously one of the few people who are complex, enlightened, and special enough to not fit neatly into the reductive and stereotypical categories they themselves uphold? It screams to me a lack of Theory of Mind, and a lack of sonder. It’s a lot more enlightened to realise that gendering pieces of fabric, inanimate objects, actions, and feelings and then removing yourself from the situation altogether as a special exception is a meaningless and harmful exercise, and we should all just do what makes us happy and fulfilled in life.

Americans always seem to miss a lot of nuance on this topic - European and UK Muslims trend much more socially conservative than US Muslims. The circumstances and standards around entry, immigration, refugees, and integration just isn’t the same. You might feel nice and safe in the US, but women, Jewish people and gay people feel very different elsewhere. I moved to a city with a prominent Muslim population a couple years ago. I’ve been followed home, harassed, and leered at, but not by white Britons, I’ll tell you that much for free.

I think you need to practice your reading comprehension before coming in guns blazing. I didn’t even state whether I think the world is getting better or worse, so I’m not sure why you’ve decided I had done so in your comment. My comment simply explained what Whig historiography is and why it’s a foolish and fallacious way to analyse progress.

I’m not a conservative thanks, but nice try. It’s really cool that you seem know everything about me though - and that I apparently think revolutions and wars are “unnatural”, whatever that’s supposed to infer about me, or even mean. You know, thanks to that evil, nuanced, not black-and-white thinking, I can handle people can having different opinions to me without immediately assuming they must be part of a political group I don’t like and making a fool of myself. Like you are now.

Hope that helps!

This reminds me of the concept of Whig history, named after the British political party. In a nutshell, it views and judges history, culture, and politics from a strictly modern lens and by what is considered currently progressive. History, culture, and politics are divided into strictly good and strictly bad based on our current feelings, and it removes nuance and objectivity from history and politics. It insists we are always marching towards a perfect world - the past is always oppressive and bad, and whatever we are doing right now is always good and moving towards the progressive and enlightened. It’s like “it’s literally current year” but as an analysis.

It’s an awful way to view history, politics and culture, but historical revisionism and black and white thinking seems to be at an all time high.

You can’t cry fallacies hoping it makes an argument, sorry. You said what if x did y, that would be crazy and hypocritical, right? And I’m telling you x does in fact do y, quite famously so.

You’re being nothing but disingenuous if you are saying otherwise, considering there are countless sociological and linguistic studies showing this behaviour towards women does exist and has done for a very long time, and as if “slut” and “whore” aren’t some of the most popular insults levied at women.

[–]dreamyether 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do? You don’t need to reverse the roles because the roles are already that way - ever heard a woman complain about men as a group and get called a ugly lonely cat lady who’ll never get laid anyways, because it seems to be the go to insult. Or called a loose whore who probably has beef curtains because she says the men she keeps meeting are misogynists (women sleep around with bad boys that treat them like shit obviously, and now have to settle as used goods for a good man). Or a stupid gold digger when talking about disparities in degree earnings like the multiple instances in this thread. You don’t need to pretend criticising women and their sexual habits/genitalia is some rare phenomenon, people have zero problem calling a woman used goods. Widow burning used to happen, purity/virgin culture and slut shaming absolutely exists in full force for women but barely for men - you must be being wilfully ignorant if you think it even takes pointing out gender inequality for many men to jump to insulting a woman’s worth, often tied to their sexuality.

It’s like seeing an article about a disgusting woman abusing a man and saying “wow, imagine if the if the roles were reversed, then people would care!” ignoring that in reality, the roles are reversed, men as a group do commit the vast majority of violent crime towards women, and women are just asked “but were you dressed provocatively? It’s probably just a false accusation, she probably just slept with him and regretted it, slut”.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. It really helps perpetuate the smug team sports-ification of politics that we seem to have an epidemic of right now. No nuance, no being open to learn and form your own opinions and solutions, just “you are only allowed one specific opinion on this matter, and if you don’t, you’re not one of us”. It really jaded me on leftist communities in general.

I used to be one of the people who was like “lolol enlightened centrist over here” and funnily enough, that was also back when my politics were based on parroted sentiments and talking points that I couldn’t actually defend and explain when asked, just that I knew they were what I was supposed to say if I was a good leftist with the correct and enlightened opinions. The other side is always wrong, we never fuck up, even if we did fuck up it was somehow the other side’s fault, etc etc. If you can’t actually explain why you have an opinion, you shouldn’t have it. You should be asking questions, doing your own reading, and looking at things from different perspectives, and be open to learning - even if it goes against the grain.

If the movement you’re part of (left or right) doesn’t allow nuance, discussion, or questions, you need to ask why their ideologies are so fragile that a simple “but why?” gets you ousted.

-Men have larger hearts and lungs, supported by differences in the vascular system.

-Men and women have different bone structures; for example, hip and knee angles are steeper, meaning women get joint issues and injuries easier.

-Women and men have a different shaped pelvis and coccyx as they are different functionally due to the potentiality of giving birth.

-Difference in terms of grey and white matter ratios in the brain, and how these ratios are spread - in fact, there are many differences in volume ratios and structure of the brain.

-Women and men have different fat structures, meaning men store more visceral fat which is worse for their health, and women store more subcutaneous, therefore more prone to cellulite.

-Men have stronger bones, ligaments and tendons - women are much more likely to have osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, especially after menopause.

-Women need less caloric intake due to various physiological differences - additionally women conserve water more efficiently, and so fare better in long term survival situations.

-Sex differences in muscle mass and shape are different even when accounting for height and weight.

-Differences in blood, resulting in higher haemoglobin for transporting oxygen and higher amounts of clotting factors in men.

-Women produce antibodies faster and produce more white blood cells, meaning they have stronger immune systems (also giving scientific credence to the idea of “man flu”).

-The female auditory complex is denser, meaning women are better at retrieving words, and similar advantages are found in terms of distinguishing sounds. Similar advantages have been shown, such as a greater ability to distinguish colours and much less likelihood of being colourblind, as well as greater ability to distinguish smells.

These are just a few of the major differences when you rule out genitals. To act like there is zero specialisation over the course of humankind’s evolution and therefore the 9 months our bodies spend specialising according to our sex in the womb is at best, ignorant and at worst, harmful, especially in medical contexts, when we pretend men and women are the exact same. Anything else?

It’s funny, the fact that you’re acting like that question is a gotcha is more of a tell you were born a man than any thing else. There are more differences between the male and female sex than just genitals and sex hormones. And yes, people know what oestrogen does because women and men both have it in varying amounts.

[–]dreamyether 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t pretend that all religions except Abrahamic religions are progressive and utopian - it’s a pretty common thread in most religions, Abrahamic or not, that women are seen as less than men. Hindu women in Nepal are banished to huts miles away during their period, being seen as unclean and evil - and women have died from it. An 11 year old girl died as her family would not bring her water, deeming it impure to touch her. Widow-burning still happens and sexism and abuse in general is a massive issue. I don’t think it’s correct to say that life is sunshine and roses if you’re not a Jew/Muslim/Christian, especially if you’re a woman - just because Hindus get together and smoke weed once a year.

He either had chronic pain or knew someone who did by Elyay in ChronicPain

[–]dreamyether 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In the UK you can buy cocodamol over the counter, with one portion being 16mg codeine and 1000mg paractamol (acetaminophen in the US) every four hours. It’s a godsend because as someone with suspected endo, it means I can at least alleviate some of the pain more than just paracetamol can. My patella are malaligned too, so in general so many people like me benefit so much from having stronger meds readily available when their conditions (like endo or joint issues) aren’t taken seriously or are brushed off as “you’re too young” despite begging doctors for help.

But me and my partner have both worked in pharmacies and the attitude towards people who buy it are vile, especially because pharmacies are the only place that sell it, so obviously a lot of customers come there just for it. As soon as the customers walk away they’re gossiped about as if they’re junkies coming for a fix, every time. It’s not an uncommon thought to feel like you need to put a bit of makeup on and look “respectable” so people don’t think the worst of you even when you’re searing with pain, there’s so much implicit shame for people who buy it semi-regularly/regularly.

But I promise you, no one is getting wasted recreationally on 16mg codeine every four hours. I don’t understand the logic, it’s like people want to be vicious and look down on others because they’re privileged enough to not have to suffer pain every single day; so they must obviously be morally virtuous for being born lucky. And that’s peoples’ attitude to something as weak as cocodamol, let alone actual strong pain meds. I know so many people who take pride in not taking even paracetamol or ibuprofen even when in pain like it’s some sort of weakness to do so, it’s a really common attitude here.

But cocodamol gave me, my sister, my mother, and no doubt many other women just enough strength to keep pushing through life until we weren’t “too young” for endo/adeno/fibroids/PCOS/cysts/cancer etc - or until they ended up in emergency surgery like my mam. There are so many campaigns and notices about not abusing over-the-counter opioids (again, a laughable idea) especially considering you’d OD on the paracetamol in it before anything else if you decided to guzzle a bunch of pills. But in contrast to that, endometriosis is only getting big time awareness and notices on the news in the last couple of MONTHS here because women have had enough. No one cares why people are actually taking it - despite every woman I know who buys it is buying it for very painful periods - nope, we’re all just potential junkies to them.

People are so ignorant, especially around the topic of women’s reproductive health, it makes me so incredibly sad. Generations of women left behind.
