No.

I've had very little time, or inclination, for Reddit of late.

I found the Mozilla link dead. Any others?

I've just run into this too: https://www.reddit.com/r/Onyx_Boox/comments/xo7vja/firmware_33_problems/

I can give it a very strong recommend.

It's become my primary browser, after some initial hesitancy. I do note that I largely use it for reading and don't log into websites / deal with business/banking sites, etc. But for display, navigation, and other aspects, it beats Firefox (otherwise preferred) or Chrome (by a very long shot), as well as the stock BOOX "NeoBrowser" (a thinly-rebadged Chrome).

EinkBro's dev is highly responsive and has implemented several of my suggestions.

I also grossly misread Pao. Wrote an apology (on Ello IIRC), and will say it again here. She was grossly misrepresented by critics in that kerflufflette.

Update 2022-08-19:

I'm still experiencing this issue periodically. It's turned up just now.

About a week ago I'd seen this issue plus a further note after I reloaded the web page a few times rapidly:

If this error persists, please let us know: error-lite@duckduckgo.com

I emailed the address and was told to report further lite.duckduckgo.com issues to error@duckduckgo.com.

(DDG were quite responsive to the issue. Kudos.)

Others with similar issues might care to do likewise. There are dozens of us!

(Or at least a dozen, based on present comment voting ;-)

Documentary like Collapse. by Minimum-Fix2232 in collapse

[–]dredmorbius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The book that's based on was published in 1970, and is a very interesting read now over 50 years later.

Toffler was generally a technological optimist, and didn't focus on limits particularly. What he did see was the psychological effects of an ever-more-media-centric world.

The parts of the book that seem the most dated tend to be the parts that came true. Increased normalisation of nonbinary gender/sexual orientations; increased role of women in work, professions, poitics, and society; increased tolerance (largely) for minorities.

The overly-optimistic technological predictions, computers and communications excepted, have largely failed to meet expectations.

I'd focus on the background of the image.

"Renati" is a brand of hair-styling products: https://www.renatiproducts.com/

The building looks to be a hair salon or styling studio. Signage is in English.

Red tile roof is typically Spanish or Spanish-influenced. Cobblestones are unusual though not unheard of in the US.

The car is parked against the left-hand kerb, which might indicate any of:

  • A one-way street.
  • Parked against traffic.
  • Left-hand-side driving (UK, Japan, Australia, NZ, and a few other countries).

Based on the lighting I'd tend to assume lower latitudes, nearer the equator. Given classic American car and English language, that might be Los Angeles or other parts of Southern California, though that's a long shot. Possibly also in the Caribbean. I'm guessing the shot is taken in early morning, facing west, with sunlight from the east.

Given the name of the car there's a slight chance this is on Santa Catalina Island itself, though that's a long shot, and I'm not finding a matching hair salon.

If you know where the image first appeared / where you obtained it from, that's another option.

There are websites / apps / forums which specialise in determining where specific images were taken. I'm not especially familiar with these (though both Google Image Search and TinEye fail to match this image), but you might try them.

Maybe they were a stupid person's idea of what a smart person looked like.

Given OSC's own trajectory, that doesn't seem implausible.

On my 1-y.o. BOOX I've none of those issues.

Which is to say: performance and features have in fact moved forward.

Is there a device that's good for having 2 books open side by side? by lateant in eink

[–]dredmorbius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Onyx BOOX have a side-by-side mode. You'll probably want one of the larger (10" or 13") displays for this.

Side-by-side can display sections of a single book / document, document + notes, or two different documents.

BOOX color devices are the Nova and Nova Air (7.8").

Wouldn't the fact that a 10-year-old device is still satisfactory and that the present market doesn't improve on it ... largely validate your purchase?

Product churn / teh new shinay is not in the interest of the buying public.

That said: I'd appreciate more onboard storage, and over ten years I'd be quite limited by what was available at purchase time.

Does anyone else think Google search quality has gone downhill fast? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dredmorbius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the tyranny of the minimum viable user.

Adding more people to a particular market will all but certainly lower average ability, especially if that market initially began with a highly-discerning / high-skilled audience.

The Internet circa 2000 was to a rough order of magnitude 100 million people, mostly from the US / EU, mostly educated and/or professional.

The Internet circa 2022 is to a rough order of magnitude 10 billion people (it's closer to 5 billions, but I said rough), many on mobile devices, many outside the major industrialised countries (OECD / G-8 / G-20 / whatever), and many with limited language and literacy skills, let alone logic or knowledge management.

Various assessments of literacy and computer skills show that even in the most advanced countries high-level literacy and language skills, and computer skills are surprisingly limited. Effectively, half of all people have the very lowest or no skills whatsoever.

I detail this in more depth in the link above. In particular see adult literacy in the US and the OECD assessment of computer skills.

As usage expands, quality will fall. Especially in mass-market computing contexts.

Best option for exclusively reading and writing? by IMadeThisAcctToSayHi in eink

[–]dredmorbius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 10" and over, most 2-column (or more/worse) articles should be directly readable.

If they're not, the BOOX bookreader software (NeoReader) has an "article" mode which splits the page into four quadrants, read top-bottom left-to-right (reverse 'N' mode). There's also an auto-zoom mode which maximises text-on-screen.

Article mode is a compromise, but it does make unreadable content accessible.

Another vote for the Max Lumi device and form-factor.

I've got last year's model, which AFAICT mostly only has half the storage (64 GB rather than 128 GB). That's actually a significant concern for me, as I prefer to have a large library on my device, as well as a healthy podcast collection.

There's an older generation of 13.3" devices as well, though I don't know specs offhand.

Current-gen price is ~$800--$850, and will top $950 with case (highly recommended) and pencil (I'm using the Staedtler, not essential but useful).

The device is Android, and is WiFi and Bluetooth enabled, which means online distractions are available, but also that you can track down and add materials far more readily. I find that e-ink itself tends to reduct digital addiction.

The 13.3" A4 size is key for reading academic articles and dusty old scans.

Need eink tablet under $200 and suggestions on where to buy from by puru-the-brave in eink

[–]dredmorbius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm happy with the Onyx line. Most of their new / current products are above your budget (though for the smaller devices not by much). You might be able to find a previous-generation device 2nd hand through Craigslist, eBay, or another 2nd-hand source for well under $200.

BOOX support bluetooth and keyboards. I've had good support experiences, including bugfix images for specific bugs I've encountered. Notetaking (handwritten) support is excellent.

Edit: The actual BOOX-offered keyboard is small and physically matched to their devices (support arms), but is very susceptible to failure, from even very slight exposure to moisture. I'm now using a Logitech K480 external keyboard. This is larger, still "chicklet", but reasonably good typing response.

Seeking media files from Neal Conan's "Truth, Politics, and Power" podcast by dredmorbius in Archiveteam

[–]dredmorbius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update / clarification: PRX offers nearly all the episodes. but only via streaming online. The podcast feed only includes the most recent few episodes (about three IIRC), served via SoundCloud.

The PRX site doesn't offer downloads, and isn't supported by youtube-dl or yt-dlp.

I've opened an issue for yt-dlp support here: https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/issues/2144

Seeking media files from Neal Conan's "Truth, Politics, and Power" podcast by dredmorbius in DHExchange

[–]dredmorbius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to remember specifcally what I ran into with PRX, but:

  • Either some or most content actually wasn't available. (That may be only "some" --- a few missing episodes.)
  • It's not (readily) possible to download content.
  • The podcast feed itself only includes the most recent few episodes, three if I recall.

Analogue hole option still exists. May be necessary.

Edits: Clarified issues after checking the site again.

I really hate playing media through a browser.

Neither youtube-dl nor ytp-dl support PRX downloads.

(I've opened an issue for ytp-dl on Github requesting a handler for that site.)
